  1. Correct me if I'm wrong.... on Google Rejects French Order For 'Right To Be Forgotten' · · Score: 1, Interesting

I thought the whole idea behind the 'right to be forgotten' was that google would 'forget' who you were. If they only forget you in the EU(search results come up as 0), but still have all the data on you (serach indexes, etc) then you haven't been forgotten have you?

I think that's what France is trying to point out here.

When a company uses HTTPS proxies, it's just making it so all of the client browsers trust every HTTPS website.

Yes, HTTPS proxies save money, but so does not using any security.

I hate to say this but most, if not all, HTTPS proxies will do certificate/domain checking to verify that the cert is in fact valid. At my previous job I maintained a WebSence proxy/web filter for the company. I would get complains all the time when a site would become unaccessable because the site did not renew their certificate before it expired, and WebSense would block it.

This is the exact reason why we need to defranchise the cable-co and telco's. If Comcast had to compete against Cox, Charter, TWC, etc. and Verizon's FiOS was competing with AT&T's U-Verus, I bet broadband speeds in the US would be much better. Then if you really didn't like they way your ISP was operating, you would have more then just one other choice. I really don't see the 1st amendment issue here. The NSL law is troubling for other reasons (prohibition on seeking legal advice) but not because you can't disclose the letter while the investigation is still ongoing.

Last I checked you always have the right to an attorney (which he did contact) no matter what, but this is only part of the problem with NSL's. It's more the infringement of the 4th amendment that concerns me. This is just as bad as the warrantless wire tapping that was going on (and most likely still it). It's an abuse of power if you don't have one branch of government checking on the other. Now if the NSL came with a warrent, signed by a judge to obtain the information/items that where being asked for in the NSL (with just the NSL having the gag order to "protect the ongoing investigation") that would be IMHO would not be an abuse of power.

Being that the number of petitions far outweigh the number of times you vote, they have that much less significance then a vote does, and thus a far less bullies trying to corrorse/pressure you for petitions then voting.

And if I do get my legs broken for signing/not signing a petition, my next stop after I get out of the hospital would be the PD to file charges for assault.

No, because if who you vote for is known, the voting public can be corrorsed into voting for or against someone or something, and if you don't there could be any number of possible threats held against you (even if you don't vote at all). The outcome of a vote has more of a direct effect on who gets voted into gov. or if public option laws/ordinances are passed.

Petitions are more we the undersigned would like to see this happen/not happen to put pressure on current elected gov. to sway them your way, and thus doesn't have as much of an impact.

BTW, your signature is checked on an absentee ballot and the registration form, just as it is checked when you go to the polls, by comparing it to known copy of your signature.

No, Voting should remain as it is, you have to prove your ID and sign-in to vote, so that no one person can vote twice (their vote and yours). But who you vote for should not be a matter of public record. Petitions while related to voting do not carry the same weight as a vote, and names need to be verified to show that X number of people did in fact sign the petition.
