We're going to see a radical change in the GUI in the 2000s.
If this does happen (which I'm not sure it will), is it necessarily a good thing? I'm sure there are certain tasks that will be sped up through voice commands (like voice commands when driving), but in the case of computers, I don't see voice communication as a huge advantage, more of a disadvantage. Take for example the use of GUI insead of command line/text interfaces, while the GUI might be easier to use and more intuitive, most hardcore computer users probably would opt for hotkeys instead of button clicking. It's faster to hit a couple keys on the keyboard than move your hand to your mouse, find a button and click it. In the same way, while voice might be easy to use, it's nowhere near as fast as a GUI let alone a hotkey (what's faster, saying "send mail" or clicking a button?). Maybe I'm old fashion, but I still like hotkeys.

Do you really have to have a villian? Perhaps the "villian" of the tale is the tragedy of the situation where no one solution seems to solve all the problems. That and I don't think the focus of X-Men was ever on the fight between "good" and "evil," rather it tends to focus more on the relationships between characters and the personal dramas of each character. So you don't have any truely evil characters who kill and destroy just for the fun of it, but that might just be more realistic.

  6. problem since IE 4 on Microsoft's IE 5.5 Flouts Industry Standards · · Score: 1

I've seen this as a major problem since IE 4. While IE 4 didn't have as many new IE only tags, it's way too lenient on HTML coding. That is, it lets you make mistakes in HTML (like not having closing table tags) and just continues to draw the web page anyway giving the web page designer no mention that there is something wrong with their code . Many people claim that this is good, that it means that IE can parse HTML better than NS, I disagree. Here's where the problem comes: suppose other browser makers like NS and Opera also start to let sloppy code slide. But since there are no standards for sloppy code, they may parse the HTML differently than IE. Since it's incorrect code to start with, any implementation would be ok. This would just lead to a mess of pages that only work on certain browsers. MS should never have let IE gloss over bad HTML.

So what should be done? I think IE and NS both should popup error messages when there is broken HTML like they do when there is a JS error. This notifies the coder to go and fix the error, rather than letting it slide. I see too many new HTML writers using sloppy code just because IE lets them.

I think he has a different definition of obsolete than the rest of us. He says:

Today's operating systems and browsers are obsolete because people no longer want to be connected to computers -- near ones OR remote ones.

    Merriam-Webster defines obsolete as:

1.a.: no longer in use or no longer useful
1.b.: of a kind or style no longer current

Well, 1.a. doesn't fit, because linux (and other operating systems) is still very useful for servers, games, something to play with, whatever. 1.b. doesn't fix because it's current in the sense that it's still in development and people are still working on it.

While his comment that people might not want to be connected to computers may be valid, his usage of the word obsolete seems pretty liberal to me (aka, flame-bait).

Anyway, read the article, some interesting things mentioned, but not really prophetic or highly insightful. Kinda just pointing out some characteristics of society.

  11. discrimination . . . on Girls Don't Want To Be Geeks · · Score: 1

I keep reading people saying "Well maybe girls just don't want to be geeks." Well, then the quesion is why don't girls want to be geeks? I see two possible answers to this, either there is a genetic disposition to not want to be a geek, or society is telling them not to be a geek. Since I doubt there is a genetic cause (because there is no evolutionary advantage to it), the causes is most likely a societal force. If society is telling girls not to be geeks and girls are just as good at being geeks as guys are, then this is discrimination. Perhaps we just don't see it because it is a whole societal influence that is generally accepted, but that doesn't mean it's not discrimination. Unless society stops deciding girls shouldn't be geeks, how will we ever break the gender divide in the workplace or elsewhere?

(btw, I'm a guy, but someone has to stand up to invoke change)

  12. Re:My own (vicarious) experience... on Girls Don't Want To Be Geeks · · Score: 2

While there doesn't have to be a 50/50 split, the question is why are women not as interested as men with regards to tech jobs? As you should have learned in your intro psych class, human behavior is determined by two factors:

    1. Genetic makeup
    2. Social Influences

Well, since there is no evidence that women don't like tech fields due to a genetic difference (and you would probably have a hard time arguing that there is one since there is no real evolutionary advantage to it), then the cause must be social influence. So if the reason that women don't want to be geeks is due to social pressures about how a woman should act, then that's discrimination.

  13. I think you miss the point . . . on Girls Don't Want To Be Geeks · · Score: 1

Back to the topic at hand, why is it that people feel the need to try to push girls into technical careers?

No one said anything about pushing girls into tech careers. The whole point of the gender (or racial or age or whatever) divide is that assuming people are in fact equal, why is there this huge difference in the percentage of men in tech fields vs women in tech files? Since we assume that people are equal, we expect the percentages to be the same, and if they aren't, then we say, something is "wrong." Now, this mind set obviously is partially flawed since not all human groups are the same especially when it comes to interests. But unless someone shows that in women don't want to be in tech fields due to a genetic difference, then it is some form of social influence causing them to not want to have a tech job. And if society is the cause of women not wanting to get tech jobs, then that is definitely a weakness of society.

It's this kind of rationalization that lead to discrimination.

Please don't moderate down, someone has to stand up to discrimination.

    Psycho-Thriller/Strange Anime:
These are mainly wierd animes that tend to be very psychological, probably don't make any sense, but the confusion is what makes you want to see more (you expect there to be answers in the next episode so you keep watching and there are normally just more questions). Lain and Perfect Blue would fall into this category. Other titles that would fall in to this category would be Akira, Kite, Key: The Metal Idol, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. I would recommend Eva because it has quite a bit of humor mixed in too.

    Ultraviolence:
These are your American stereotype anime. Lots of limbs being knocked off, blood everywhere, not much of a plot but enough to keep you interested (ok, some do have decent plots, this is just my bias). Ninja Scroll and (maybe) Battle Angel would fit into this category. I say maybe about Battle Angel because it actually has a decent story line about humanity, love, duty, and dreams of advancing in society. Other anime in this genre would be Fist of the North Star (martial arts and blood), 8Man After (Robocop-ish), and 3x3 Eyes (girl of an ancient race want to become human).

    Goffy comedy:
Just plain silly, perhaps touching, but the type of humor that makes your side hurt from laughing. I would put Battle Athletes into this category and probably Trigun, although I haven't seen any Trigun. If you liked BA, then I would recommend Battle Athletes Victory which is the TV series. Same characters, different story line. While the TV series is not as funny as the OVA, it's still pretty funny. Yuna is another silly/cute/funny show. It might actually be too cutesy for most people. Bakuretsu Hunters (aka Sorcerer Hunters) is also silly humor. I would also recommend the Slayers series. It's a fantasy/comedy, very funny, great animation, great music, and great storyline. I'm waiting for Slayers DVDs to be released. I would also recommend Sailor Moon, but I assume you already know about it and it's not in the top 10 so you probably don't like it. Ranma would also be a good comedy to watch. Maison Ikkoku is a very good romantic comedy. Other comedies I recommend are Saber Marionette J and Tenchi Miyu stuff. Both series revolve around a guy main character who has lots of girls who are crazy about him (there's more to the plots).

    Other stuff:
Well, I haven't seen Cowboy Bebop so I don't know where to classify it and I don't like Dragon Ball Z because it does move so slow (spending whole episodes watching people power up is absurb. But that does explain why there are so many episodes.)

    Stuff not mentioned:
Well, my favorite genre of anime is romantic comedy. Maison Ikkoku would fit into this category. Kimagure Orange Road and Video Girl Ai are shows in this genre that I would recommend seeing. Other shows that aren't available yet except through fansubs are Marmalade Boy, His and Her Circumstance and Child's Toy to name a few. Other series that I would recommend are Fushigi Yuugi (aka Mysterious Play). It's about a girl who gets sucked into a book set in ancient China. It is a comedy that deals with a love triange and power struggles. Record of the Lodoss Wars is a classic AD&D type anime, lots of magic and fighting. Nadesico is a great comedy that involves mysteries, space fights, and a cute genious girl (I want this on DVD too). Bubble Gum Crisis is a classic cyber punk 80s anime (the music is very 80s) about a group of females who fight crime in power suits. El-Hazard is a comedy about a few students and their teacher who get sent into an alternate fantasy world. One of the characters joins forces with the "bad guys" and the others join with the "good guys." Pretty funny. Magic Knights Rayearth is another fantasy with lots of magic, cute girls, and power of friendship to overcome hardships. Maho Tsukai Tai (aka The Magic Users Club) hasn't been released in the US yet, but it's a hillarious comedy about a magic club that fights alien invaders. Anything by Miyazaki should be watch. All of the following are classics by him: Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke), My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Poco Rosso, Grave of the Fireflies, and Nausicaa to name a few.

Well, I've probably left out lots of other great anime shows/series, but that should be plenty to get started on. Remember that anime isn't just for kids or just for adults, anime comes in all genres. So go out there and find the genre you like.

Are you under the impression that what you do for a living has a greater value than the average person? And between listening to their record label (who they get paid by) and listening to fans (who they think are stealing their music), they choose to listen to the record label. Metallica is just a puppet being used to get what the record label wants. In a way it's kinda sad that Metallica will probably get screwed the worst by this and that the record labels tricked them into it.
