I have been going to the University of Phoenix for the past year. All of our textbooks are PDF eBooks. With my most recent class, the book used Adobe DRM. I have the latest Acrobat reader for Linux, however, it does not do DRM!
So, it looked like I had paid $60+ for a book that I could not even use!
Instead, I had to break the law and find someone with a Windows computer, "unlock" the PDF files, and then "print" them through a "PDF print filter" to remove the DRM part.
This really pissed me off for a couple reasons.
I had to break the law to read a book I purchased.
The formatting is a bit off because of some inconsistencies in the fonts used by the PDF filter.
What is the point??? If DRM excludes a single legitimate user, then it should not be used!
Also, if DRM is so easy to circumvent, what is it stopping? The only thing the DRM did for me was make me waste a couple hours of my study time.
I know I'll feel MUCH safer and be able to allow my kids back outside once these scourge are off the streets! Let's all push for the death-penalty for these lawless hooligans! I know I won't rest until I know that the record companies are safely making billions per year.
FINALLY! It is about time that the US government got tough on these thieves! There are so many Hollywood actors and musicians that have to settle for much smaller mansions these days - I have even heard that Lars had to wait a few extra months to get his gold-plated shark-tank bar for his pool! STOP THE INSANITY!
Please, please people - how can an actor be expected to live on only $25,000,000 per film?! It is just unheard of!
Well, since I don't "own" any of the music on the CD's that I have in my posession, I simply and "licensed" to listen to them - I guess I'll just have to download all of the music that I have and burn it onto the new format. After all, I have a LEGAL right to do so...
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk who carried a gun and ran from the mob. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it. That does not make sense. Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot-tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor with a bunch of two-foot-tall Ewoks. That does not make sense.
But more important, you have to ask yourself what does this have to do with this case. Nothing. Ladies and Gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case. It does not make sense. Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major software company and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca. Does that make sense? Ladies and Gentlemen I am not making any sense. None of this makes sense.
And so you have to remember when you're in that jury room deliberating and conjugating the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No. Ladies and Gentlemen of this supposed jury it does not make sense. If Chewbacca lives on Endor you must acquit.
I know he seems guilty. But ladies and gentlemen this is Chewbacca. Now think about that for one minute. That does not make sense. Why am I talking about Chewbacca when a company's life is on the line? Why? I'll tell you why. I don't know. It doesn't make sense. If Chewbacca does not make sense you must acquit. Here look at the monkey , look at the silly monkey.
I rest my case your honor.

So, in this "survey", they are talking about a 100-user network. If the server cost ~$1000 and each user license cose ~ $100 (which is is actually more), then we are looking at $11,000.
According to the survey, that leaves $787. So, for the next FIVE years, you have $787 to spend on support, upgrades, and such...
Hmmm, I just can't see it.

Having Microsoft at LinuxWorld is like having a KKK booth at an African American rally!
The similarities are remarkable...
- Both lie, cheat, and steal to promote their messages.
- Both prey on ignorance, and then fill those gullible enough to listen with lies and FUD.
Microsoft, get the fuck out, until you can actually act with _honest_ integrity and play fair, you are not welcome. It will take some time to gain mine, and many others, trust. (if ever).
We all know that the web is dead anyway. Microsoft is going to implement a new feature in office that creates it's own globe (a.k.a.: web). Microsoft is the dominant leader in software technologies and with their position can drive consumers whichever way they want.
Forget PHP, forget Perl, forget Python & Ruby..Net is where the future is...
For all the PHP zealots out there. Yes, I too like PHP, it has many good features.
But, I find that if I want to do dynamic content, HTML::Mason is much better (for me at least). I can embed the Perl right into the HTML, plus Mason has a lot of other nice features that make it worthwhile.
Plus, I am having a lot of fun reading all of the comments generated by this discussion.
It really amazes me how people basically say things like "Well, I use X for this so everyone else should too"... The key to being a good web developer is using the right tool for the job AS WELL AS utilizing the tools available to you. you also need to take into account what you are better at. I am a Perl developer, sure, I could choose to write apps in C, Java, PHP, Ruby, whatnot, but then I am not utilizing MY talents to their fullest.
Lots -O- flame-bait in these discussions, that is for sure...
100 pages? Sure, we could have done, but then nobody would ever *learn* from the book.
This book was designed to be a learning tool, with practical examples.
My goal with the writing that I did was to provide concrete examples people could use and learn from, directly. I have seen too many books that show a concept and then explain a bit about it, but NEVER really show you how to duplicate it. Instead, every line of code is explained so that the reader can see how and why it works.
Sure, if you are comfortable with Perl and writing CGI's, this book is probably not for you...
Also, those people saying CGI's are dead. Um, heh, ok - think what you will...
Once again, Microsoft's marketing minions are hard at work, spending MILLIONS of dollars on their so-called "way out".
I think I am up to $40 now (no, i didn't leave off 5 or 6 zero's)
Please, check out my "Microsoft" site at www.wehadthewayout.com. I really hope to be a thorn i Microsoft's side - and if I can help out the Apple folks as well, then that is cool too!
Sure it's dead! Just ask Microsoft

Dumbass? I didn't want to waste the $500 bill! DUH!
I paid them. I sent SCO $199 in Monopoly money - which I figure is worth MORE than the license they are offering.
Will I get sued, probably since they have my name and address.
Do I really care, not really. Since SCO has been showing *stolen* code (which is actually free code that was written somewhere around 1974).
SCO is a bunch of greedy dumbasses who are just out to make a buck.
At their conference they were saying how damaging the GPL and free software is, yet their latest release has over 100 OPEN SOURCE components.
HEY DUMBASSES (this means you SCO), I challenge you to release a product WITHOUT using ANY Open Source tools.
Man, I sure am glad I use the newsgroups for music rather than P2P apps... I seem to get better quality files as well.

I know the reason I don't use Java for web apps is because Perl was designed for text manipulation, which is what you end up doing with web apps.
