I really don't use much perl, but I do use a lot of PHP. PHP with the curl functions seems to me about 10x easier to use/learn than Perl and LWP (not saying it's hard, it's just that PHP is really really easy), and seems to do the same exact thing.
It doesn't have what I consider to be "true" outdoor scenes, because if you notice, there will always be something that blocks your path, like huge "rocks" which really serve as a wall around the entire level. This is not the case in Tribes2. (or Tribes1 for that matter)
I believe the profits are split 50/50 between the developer and garage games (i could be wrong that that). If that is the case, and someone makes "the next hit" using this engine, 50/50 is quite good. (really good actually). I believe the normal split is 20/80? (80 percent going to publisher) ? I could be wrong on that. It might be more like 30/70
If I remember correctly, Sierra actually gets first dibs on all games published using the Torque engine. If sierra doesn't want to publish it, then the developer can go out on their own. (or maybe next is through Garage Games, then after that they can go out on their own, not sure)
Remember, the Torque engine is based on the Tribes 2 engine, but includes many more fixes and tweaks. IMHO, The Torque engine is right up there with Q3, and in some cases better. When is the last time you have seen the Q3 engine render true outdoor scenes, complete with terrian, and not enclosed in a "box"?
The torque engine also has amazing networking code. Even if you hated the Tribes games, they have always had the best networking code out of any multiplayer game out there.
GG have also been contracted out to finish the final Tribes 2 patch. Apparently they are getting something other than money in return for doing the patch. Perhaps rights to use certain code from the Tribes 2 engine (Sierra made them take out some code from Tribes 2).
Rumors are that GG has been contracted out to do the next Tribes PC game as well.

Internet in Africa is flaky at best. I work on a project called RANET . It is an effort of serveral partners (ACMAD , NOAA, and USAID to name a few) to make climate and weather related information more accessible to rural populations and communites.
We use the Worldspace Satellite system to send climate information in HTML format (it's a 1 way digital radio system, that when hooked up to your computer, acts as a modem). The villages get the information, then in turn translate it to the local language. We have set up low power FM radio stations and then they broadcast the updated data over the radio waves. Wind up radios made by Freeplay have been given to the villages, and they can tune in to the broadcast, and find out if some of the local watering holes have dried up for example.
I was over in Niamey, Niger a few months ago training users from Ghana, Niger, Chad, and other african countries how to code HTML so then those local countries can upload their climate information to us so we can send it over the satellite system.
We ran into some interesting problems concerning the interent. The local internet provider charges by time spent on the internet. Well, since they understand they can make some money by doing this, they actually slowed down everyones internet speed so they would be on the net longer, and be charged more. When a local person complained about this, not only did they turn off his phones and internet at his workplace...they turned off his phones and internet at HIS HOUSE.
I too am a goverment contractor. Our office is entirely macintosh, except for one section which has 3 or 4 pc's in it. All our webservers are running linux w/ apache.
you might not use flash mx to play a movie, but i bet you could create an interface in flash mx that will play quicktime movies........prob why apple is pissed off..
(i haven't looked at flash mx yet, so i could be wrong)
and can you please tell me why Sony is any better than Microsoft?
I seem to remember when the PS2 launched, it had crap for games, it took a year before quality games started to show up........same thing will happen for the xbox.
after all, they do have star wars: knights of the old republic lined up for it.....thats a killer app right there. RPG being made by the balders gate folks....set hundreds of years before episode 1.
They had a short bit about this on the show CNN Next. Included were interviews with the president of the RIAA, she was not happy at all. Basically said that Gateway was supporting piracy. Lol, what will they think of next?
because you can create your own adventures, and play them over the net with other people.....it does have single player, but that isn't what people are looking forward to. its the toolkit creation that people are looking forward to.
Instead of gathering around a tabletop and throwing dice, you can do it all within NWN, and have cool graphics at the same time.
I'm very suprised that Garage Games was not mentioned in the article.
They allow you to buy the source code to the engine that powered Tribes 2 for $100.
Not only that, but they have released a project called Realm Wars. This is a game that the community contributes to. If you bought the source code, then you can contribute source code. If not, you can still download the demo, and contribute SCRIPTS, artwork, models and more.
It will be extremely interesting to see how this pans out. (as long as I don't get any UE errors)
Sorry , you are right, I meant that XM isn't allowed to broadcast *their own* local broadcasts, (and i assumed they weren't allowed to rebroadcast local radio, but after doing research i see i am wrong).
Satellite Radio, such as XM, are not allowed to broadcast local FM radio stations either. They have to bill XM radios as "mobile" devices, and this is why they are so expensive and you don't see any XM radio units that are standalone stereo's. Sure it can be taken out of your car and moved indoors....but they don't sell any indoor only units, because then it wouldn't be "mobile".
If this law gets thrown out, I suspect it would apply to radio as well (this would be a good thing)
and of course, the internet connections are horrid there...
I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT/. LINKED TO NIGERIA...their web connection is bad enough as it is. You would be doing them a favor if you took that link off of your mainpage.....
Story: In Niger, they charge users by the time they use the internet. Well the only ISP in town thought to themselves, hey, we can slow down the internet connection and get more money! Someone complained, and not only did they turn off his phone and internet access at work, they turned it off at his house!!
actually, the AOL I remember was 1200 baud! I can't believe I put up with that crap, heh. It was before 56k was available everywhere (even in cities..i think it was during the time of the 2 56k standards). Yeah, that's right, it was mindspring and not earthlink that bought those guys out.....yep, hereintown..i almost used those guys but just setteled on the university access...i used to work in the university computer labs (making web pages for nonprofits around the county)
yes AOL was a *local* call (cumberland number), well before MicroIntegration was around. I was lived in Frostburg from 1994 - 2001. This was before even the university had dialup access. And I remember NetBiz, I had a friend that worked for them before Earthlink bought them out.
But before all that, AOL was the only one, well, maybe The Crystal Palace offered access...I always thought it was just a BBS.
I went to Frostburg State University (5000 students), which is just outside of Cumberland. It was extremely frustrating to not have access to broadband in the area. It's 2 hours from DC, 2 hours from Baltimore, and 2 hours from Pittsburgh. Yes, The Boonies (tm).
Only a couple of years ago, the only ISP available in the area was AOL.
If they can pull this off, this will do wonders for the region. Cumberland has the second highest poverty rate in the state of Maryland. Once, it rivaled Baltimore, but then the C&O Canal stopped being used (Cumberland is on the western terminus of the canal), and Cumberland plumeted into poverty.
I like John Dogget, good character, and well acted by t2 guy (heh). Am I the only one? The main thing that gets on my nerves is that it feels like they are just repeated the same stories. I mean, did they ever REALLY solve the whole alien invader thing? I didn't think they did....and now these "super soilders", will they just leave that story up in the air as well?
I agree, Tribes 2 is like crack. You just can't stop playing it once you get the hang of it. Too bad it's not quite as addictive as Tribes 1 was. (mainly due to the sorry state it was released in) (the tribes franchise just turned 3 years old yesterday).
I really don't use much perl, but I do use a lot of PHP. PHP with the curl functions seems to me about 10x easier to use/learn than Perl and LWP (not saying it's hard, it's just that PHP is really really easy), and seems to do the same exact thing.

correct links
Freeplay
and while the worldspace link is correct, we actually partner with the Worldspace Foundation, not the corporation
Worldspace Foundation

There are some Comcast Digital subscribers who got the channel yesterday.
More will get it on May 1st.
And all comcast networks should have it by May 31st.

The 1000 searches a day is very nice....I know I would never need that many (if results were unlimited anyway).
HOWEVER...you only get 10 results per search??
