They just decided to remove PVP from the game for the time being while they work out the kinks. I have been in the beta since the beginning and I'm not sure what to think. When the game first was unveiled, it seemed like PVP (normal fps multiplayer) was the main focus of the game. Fast forward to today, the CEO claims only 3% of Firefall players are playing PVP (I believe it). PVP definitely needs work, so this is probably a good thing - but I have to wonder how deep The9's pockets are (Red5's Chinese investors)....so far, they have allowed Red5 to completely change gameplay over and over....which can be a good thing, but I worry about how many people are getting burned out due to the game changing every few months. I read somewhere that they have spent more on this game than Blizzard spent on the making of WoW and Diablo3. I don't know if that is true though....if so, it should be worrisome because this game is nowhere near as complete as either of those games.
It also seems weird that they are spending all this money on marketing (million dollar statues, multiple RED cameras, advertising blasted all over PAX and other conventions) - without generating money.
yeah my ec2 instance that is hosted in east-1a is up and the management console tells me it's just east-1d that is down...but i have a hard time believing that
"We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network.
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained. I do think it was trying too hard to be Stargate: Galatica , however it was getting better as this season went on. I think it's a shame that SyFy seems to be cancelling all of the 'serious' shows.....they are left with only the super-cheesy shows (like Eureka, Warehouse 13, Haven...all got renewed..I don't understand how anyone can watch Haven...it's awful) - these cheesy series, along with their b-movies seem to be the only shows that get ratings. It's a shame.
yeah, the link i submitted for the accepted article was NOT the gamespot article, it was a link to the rise and fall forums where several ex sssi'ers have been posting (and more info is provided). Not sure why it was changed. Anyway - Midway came right out in their quarterly report and said something to the effect that they felt the market was too crowded (with AOE3 + Civ 4), so they wanted to delay the release of R&F. I was looking forward to the hero mode of R&F. Oh well.
what do you define as 'budget'? I just picked up a 30XS955 for $997. It's pretty much the best 30" CRT you can buy. It includes a QAM HDTV decoder, which means you can watch unscrambled HDTV channels without the need for any extra hardware (i pick up about 10 hdtv channels over standard cable (comcast)).
Completely untrue that microsoft is ending xbox game development this year.
also, blu-ray technology guarantees the highest graphic quality....what. i guess sony are planning on making FMV games then? Sure you might be able to store more textures on a blu-ray disc, but really you could do the same exact thing with DVDs, just might need multiple ones.

"While just about everyone is (rightfully) focused on the future, Robbie wanted to make sure gamers knew that Microsoft would still be very supportive of the current generation system, as would their third-party partners. He said that their success is ultimately rooted in games, and we were treated to a glimpse of things to come, and a video rolled that showed off a ton of upcoming games, including titles like Half-Life 2, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Conker: Live and Reloaded. We were told that there will be over 200 Xbox games released this year, and there will be more to come in 2006."
watched it from the canton waterfront park....its a shame that it rained all day (and I was looking forward to seeing the train enter the water)
for those that plan on visiting baltimore, i highly suggest checking out the American Visionary Musuem (http://www.avam.org/ which sponsored this race...its a musuem full of art by non-trained artists. has some really great stuff.
try grappling the ground....then pressing the 'walk backwards' key...then let go of the grappler and press forward at the same time...it gives you a huge boost.
Can't wait for the full release of the game this week. Hard to believe they started work on it just over 2 years ago.
Having played the closed beta, open beta, and demo extensively, I can really say this is truely a tribes sequel (even though it takes place before t1 and t2). This is probably the most fun i've had playing an online game in quite awhile.
There are still issues though - there are still bugs in the demo, which is the same code as the 'gold' code. When will developers learn that they need to wait to release the product until all known bugs (especially gameplay altering ones) are worked out...if anything, you would have thought they would have learned from the horrible release that tribes 2 had. At least the bugs aren't as bad as the ones tribes 2 had, but still...there is no excuse for this.
Also, it looks like there may not be a linux server (and certainly, no linux port of the game like there was for t2....) I'm not losing any sleep over the no linux client, but I do think it's a shame that there is no linux server. Apparently the problem is they would have to license the havok engine for linux as well - and I guess they didn't want to pony up the money for it...not sure if it would be really worth it in the longrun i guess.
The developers hang out quite a bit over on the Tribalwar forums.
Heard them talking on CNN about the X-Cup, which will take place in 2006 in New Mexico. Apparently New Mexico won the bid to have it in their state ($10 Million).
They said they have to have 50 (i think i heard that right?) vehicles ready to fly, having 5 or 6 fly a day.
I work on a project that looks to be similar to this. It's called RANET ( http://www.ranetproject.net ), basically we transmit weather, climate and other information to rural populations in those parts of the world using a digital radio satellite system (that happens to carry a data channel). It's similar to the technology that XM Radio uses here in the States. The radio can be hooked up to a computer (which can be run off a solar panel and car battery). Usually these computers and radios are setup at low power FM radio stations that we have helped setup, and then the information can be translated into the local language. We also make use of freeplay radios, which are hand cranked radios, so that way the local villagers can listen to the broadcast.
Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.
Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.
Here is what we know:
1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.
2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.
3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.
4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.
5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).
6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.
Well, this sucks.
What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.
We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.
I work for the government, and we had to remove the directions to our office from our website. Didn't quite understand this..since we have our address on our website and all you need is something like mapquest to get directions. Makes no sense.
Yes, I agree 100%. It goes along with the M&M Rating Sytem for movies...Monkeys and Midgets....if a movie has monkies in it, it gets 1 star..if it has midgets in it it gets 1 star..if it has monkeys AND midgets, it gets a whopping 2 stars (the highest rating possible). If only ATI had caled it MonkeyMidgetRender, then we could be assured it would beat out the other 2.

the baltimore race is the east coast qualifier for that california race...

Sid Meirs Civ 4 will also be using python and xml for its scripting language.
its not an american thing....(well maybe it is now), it started with the nazi's back in WW2.

and its great for changing direction mid-route.
