You didn't clarify in your statement whether you like communism or dismiss it.
Because communism has nothing to do with openness. Quite the contrary, virtually all communist systems (there are many flavours) of past and present are particularly jealous of interference, be it from the inside or outside and it is probably one of the most conservative systems around.
I therefore suggest you start reading up on the subject before you fuck up during a next election.
Those of us that remember the British cars and motor cycles of years gone by know the absence of leaks had to be due to a dry sump, a seized engine is waiting when no leak is discernible.
With the automotive industry all but gone from the UK this national obsession with making things leak has been taken to a new industry.
They know what they're doing.
Verison is so sure about their new security policies that they wanted to show the experts that publishing their collective addresses is no longer a problem.
it is a terribly important issue because of the possibility for abuse.
I'm afraid the way things are in the USofA it's more like the certainty of abuse...
Here in The Netherlands nearly all courts will refuse to touch anything with illegally procured evidence, they demand the state (prosecutor and police) to be squeaky clean.
There isn't a single Metric/Decimal standard, one of the oldest and now base for many national and international standards is the German DIN: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN
The Atmosphere and Kg/cm2 as units of pressure are discouraged in the Decimal/Metric world, we should use the Bar instead.
Especially in Germany the Atmosphere is still being used and in Italy the Kg/cm2 remains popular.
Norway and Canada are among the very few countries that use the Pascal in daily life.
Here in The Netherlands there has been a feeble attempt in meteorology to replace the Bar etc. by the hPa (Hecto Pascal) it being conveniently equivalent to mBar (milliBar)
I'm afraid you're mixing up two Decimal systems, the older Metric and the newer SI system.
Bar, Kg/cm2 and Atmosphere are certainly valid expressions for pressure in the Metric systems.
Another Decimal system is the SI and it prefers the use of Pascal for pressure.
We cannot ship codecs through the distro, as they are not free to redistribute. So we have built a restricted download area that is accessible through the store.
They don't bother to inform users of different legal requirements for non-US countries.
Effectively this means they try to milk users from all over the world for charging for totally unnecessary codex.
This is rather nasty as they are incorporated in the UK, not the US.
Or even better, on their own site they proclaim:Founded in late 2004, Canonical Ltd is a company headquartered in Europe.
Amen! The reality is that the codecs mainly in use in the world today
You have a very quaint idea what 'the world today' encompasses.
On the subject of Software patents it's mainly limited to a country in North America that's financially less than an example for 'the world'.
The patent system is largely protecting the inventor.
Indeed and for me rightfully so.
But patents on Software (formulas you know) are not right. Some sort of reward for a developer might be appropriate but it has to be tied to the industry.
And in software that means maybe only for 3 or 5 years max.
You can have customs look at your laptop and any other media at European borderposts, internal or external.
But that's where any comparison stops.
Customs in most European countries will either give you a nice receipt and a number to contact for more information or, like here in The Netherlands they'll just do a dd on the disks and then return the computer and media. Besides that Europe has privacy laws that protect your data against sharing with non-documented entities
My sig is about the US and not just US officials...

The difference is the Germans don't habitually 'loose' this collected data.
No, no.

But just as important for the human body is the relative pressure, relative to our customary atmosphere.
Mars has a typical pressure of only 6 mBar against our earth's 1000 mBar, that's just over half a percent!
For a Martian our atmosphere is equivalent to 166 times their home pressure, a bit comparable with what high tech military submarines can withstand.
The absolute emptiness of outer space can't even realistically be expressed as a fraction of the pressure that we're used to...

Ubuntu is not about free software. It is about power and money.
Not quit, it's about Microsoft loosing power and money.
it's only on Linux (the so-called "Free software" platform) where I've been coerced into paying.
You missed something, it's Paying as well.
I wish...
Damn good summary!
I'm no poly sci major, but I think patents constitute government interference in the free market.
Sure, and telling you what side of the road to drive on is interference in Darwinism.
As we speak the state is bailing out the whole economy. The state hates capitalism
Yeah, about since Monday right?

Probably has something to do with Microsoft being a monopoly and bundling their own DVD player would be anti-competitive.
You bet!
And rightfully so, they are a de facto monopoly and have to carry the burden :)
Selling it as Vista Media Center seems to work for them.
For many it's the only way to get a reliable WPA connection.
There are plenty of good browsers for Linux without the need of wine.
(Warning, some Flash)
Hmm, maybe you could send them to Alaska :)
Among the rest there should be enough to make the balance.
What's not sensible about at-will employment?
Inequality.
A bit like the ban on unionisation, against an individual employee the company is always the stronger party.
But that's where any comparison stops.
