    My wife was a very strong Christian with absolute faith in her life and her life after death until she took a theology class with a very obviously biased professor who spent a great deal of effort convincing his class of the folly of such belief. Now she questions her faith and correctness every day.

    So you tell me what that accomplished?

    But that's just the point! People should be and have to be accountable for their own belief, that's certainly not the same as (comfortable?) blind faith.

    Only by making up your own mind using your own sources you can become a whole and balanced person.
    Lifelong study is the duty of a religious person.

    I think the critical teacher has done her a great favour.

    On a recent KLM flight from Copenhagen to Amsterdam the flight crew made an extra announcement prior to take off urging everyone to double check their phones were switched off.

    It was worded it such a way that my colleague and me were wondering if they were indeed monitoring the GSM frequencies within the airframe.

    On the other hand, the number of calls already made on the surveyed flights kind of prove the added risk of mobile phones to the control of the plane is negligent. With a cell base station on board that risk is even lower due to the low power needed to communicate to such a nearby station.

    which leaves us with the nuisance factor, maybe only texting should be allowed.

    Some of them are probably innocent, and some of them most likely aren't. The question is how to determine that, which is a difficult decision in a time of war. But they certainly weren't put in jail for thinking the wrong thoughts. They were believed, rightly or wrongly, to be involved in terrorism.

    Pray why can't that be determined inside of the USofA and by a regular court according to that 'Best of the World' judicial system?

    Among all the stupidities the Bush/Cheney branch of religion has committed Guantanamo is by any measure the most damaging to the statute of the self-proclaimed Free Nation.

    It wouldn't reduce the evasion rate to zero - it would simply be moving the responsibility for reprimanding offenders from the TV Licensing Authority to HM Revenue and Customs, and placing the BBC in direct State control.

    Two times nonsense;

    • When paid from general tax there is no need to chase up non payers.
    • With proper legal safeguards the source of the money has no effect on the independence of the broadcasters.

    People can always vote with their feet and stop using TV and the money the BBC gets goes away.

    Nice theory but even when you only watch commercial or foreign programs you still have to pay the licence.
    It's not a BBC licence.

    Excactly how it's since a few years done in The Netherlands.

    I don't mind paying for the benefits the public programs have but it was a pain to once a year have to remember that paying that license!
    (No I don't feel sorry for the few that don't have a TV or radio but now pay towards the programs.)

    I agree it's not so great an idea.

    We reached a point were only an extremely small number of people do not have a TV and or radio or consume the programs in another way like via their PC.

    That's why I agree with the system we now have in The Netherlands were the necessary monies for the public broadcasters are paid from regular taxes.
    To keep the present system of TV/radio licenses just to be fair for the odd that do not consume the provided public (or commercial!) programs is highly inefficient.

    Expanding it to PC's and the likes is worse.
