....which would include things like threatening random passers-by and generally acting like thugs, its standard crowd control tactics, and while very far from acceptable civilised behaviour, it does work.
Oh, so that's why riots break out when the cops are around - the cops are acting like assholes and start it.
I'll remember that if I'm ever called for jury duty and the cops are whining about how the crowd rioted and they had to bash people's skulls in, fired tear gas or used deadly force.
$1,000 per PC is very steep - especially for such large purchases. Maybe it isn't just the Dell rep but maybe also the person doing the purchasing - like maybe the purchasing agent is getting kick-backs or something.
I heard on the radio the other day on the Clark Howard show that Dish is still charging their customers full price for the News Corp channels that people paid for ( I guess you have to get a premium package or something to get them) even though they aren't receiving them, The caller stated that he paid for them and isn't getting them and when he asked the customer service rep for a refund or discount, the DIsh rep said too bad.
It doesn't sound like Dish is the good guys here either.
As far as I'm concerned, paying for TV is a rip-off - there are no decent providers.
Turbines are fuel guzzlers It would make your sedan's fuel consumption put an HMMWV to shame
You got a source for that? Your standard Gasoline engine is 20-25% efficient. Gas turbines have are over 60% efficient. That's one reason they are used in power plants.
FTFA:
Aircraft turbines consume six to eight times as much air as a piston engine; in the process, they devour fuel like sharks in a school of tuna
At least we know that America was as stupid then as it is now.
FTFA:
The turbine engines required some unusual manufacturing processes, but the team hoped those issues, which would be quite expensive to resolve, could be addressed after they had proved the viability of the turbine cars.
And...
So, it looks like to me that production costs would be through the roof and the cars would guzzle gas.
Just because it's cool technology doesn't mean it's practical.
I just imagined a "FOX Internet". Imagine this - a web portal and search engine that will give you just Fox' narrative. Watch Beck and he mentions something and he says, "Don't believe me! Read for yourself!" So you search on FOX.net and come across foxwiki and it says Global Warming is a LIBERAL myth created as an excuse for wealth transfer and for more taxation for LIBERAL causes.
Arg! The Kodak Color Darkroom Dataguide isn't still in print. It's been out of print for over a decade - but most of it is obsolete. Many of Kodak's color products mentioned in that book have been discontinued.
Had to switch from Chrome to Firefox because for some crazy reason the Cut&Paste won't work.
I was looking at used prices of many book and some folks sell them for ridiculous prices, even when they're still in print. Like this one and most of the material in the book is out of date. Someone is selling one for $60+ !?
This will screw up my healthcare for the rest of my life! Makeing all of these errored stupid databases cross link will do far worse than this.
She is now treated well but forever she will be DX Epileptic even though it is completely wrong
Have you checked the MIB to see if both of you have those entries? If they are there, dispute them.
For those those don't know, the MIB is yet another company that collects data on us to report to subscribers who want to know about your health care history.
You gave them permission to use that information when you signed the patient information form at the doctors office in order to get treatment.
Over time I became immune to placebos, I now take Extra-Strength Placebos (liqui-gels). Twice the inert ingredients!
With the guaranteed spurious effects?!
Spurious -learned that from porn magazines as a kid - all the penis enlargement pill advertisements used that word. That's right parents, enhance your child's vocabulary with porn - you want them to be successful, don't you?!
Stop pirating English. You didn't help to create it in any significant way, so why do you feel entitled to use it in communication?
Oh please.
You are merely adding a few bricks on top of a gigantic skyscraper, but then you want to claim all floors above them as your property?
If those few bricks make the structure actually work, then yes, I will claim it as my own. What? I can't profit off of it? Oh well, I'll just keep my ideas to myself. The same goes for the mundane piece of unoffensive art that hangs in the stairwell - no pay, then I'll have to do something else to pay the bills. Make a T-Shirt off of the art - I want a piece of the action because otherwise without my image you'd have no T-Shirt.
The idea that you alone labored to create a piece of software or work of art is just a fiction in your head.
True. BUT I also expect everyone of those individual contributors to be able to lay claim to their work and claim on how to make others work useful with their contributions.
Saying one is standing on the shoulders of others and therefore has no right to lay claim to their work is just an excuse to leach off of others hard work.
Claiming one's ideas as his own is almost as valuable as the money one can get. There's not many things that are as sickening than watching one's insight and work get absorbed into the collective. And seeing others get the recognition and rewards that come from claiming one's work is inspiring: whether it's seeing become a billionaire or going down in history as the person that made the breakthrough.
I think what the parent's point is that many of these folks are doing this to make a living. When one has their backs against the wall, they do desperate things.
It would be a great sociological study - finding out the motives for these crimes: poverty, drug habits, wanting some extra cash for luxury gods. etc....
That's because just about every C++ coder wants to be the guru (and maybe find the error that gets the $2 check from Bjarne - I actually saw one and the guy who got it framed it!) so, what do they do? Ever frick'in chance they get, they have to use some esoteric feature of the language in their development regardless if it's appropriate - I've done it too. For example, how many of you fellow C++ guys made a template class even though the class would only deal with one data type for ever and ever and ever? Or overloaded an operator just for the sake of overloading it - operator overloading back in my day was the most over used and abused feature in C++.
When I got over the guru thing, I always tried to keep my code well documented and used features sparingly.
For the record, templates can be awesome such as when using the STL - that saved so much grunt work!
The executives want no employees, yet still want a mass market they can sell to and get big salaries themselves.
That's ending as the mass market hollows out. Increasingly under 1% of the population takes most the money and doesn't share it. They are destroying their own market by not contributing any employee/customers to it.
They believe that they can sell to developing countries and that will save their asses. Unfortunately for them, they are also under the impression that after off-shoring industrialized manufacturing and development, they will also be the ones making the stuff. Nope, technology will transfer and local firms will take over. Eventually, companies like Intel, GM, and any other big American corp that has moved pretty much overseas (except for mgt) will be made irrelevant. All those foreign scientists, engineers, accountants and other knowledge workers will wise up, start their own firms, and destroy the old stodgy firms.
What will I do? Buy the foreign cheaper products - I have no choice. My standard of living is worse than my Grandfather's. My Grandpa had an eighth grade education, 5 kids, a stay at home wife, middle class home, a car, and had no problem paying the bills. He retired with a great pension and never had to worry about eating, keeping the house, and he still gave out $10,000 a pop to his kids. My Dad supported 3 kids, a house, two cars on one salary. You can't do that anymore.
That American dream is dead, dead, dead.
We're spiraling down to the lowest common denominator: poverty stricken people who will work 14 hour days - 7 days a week and thank their personal god that they can do that because the alternative is far worse.
Is when I open and change an Office doc (Office XP) in OO and try to save it, I get the error message that I need to save in the OO format because I can't save the formatting in the original MS format.
OO must be able to save documents back into the original MS format if it wants to take market share from MS. When you get a document from a client, they want it back in an MS format - they're not going to open it up in OO just because you want to use it.
Macros: OO still has issues with MS' macros.
For my personal analysis, my OO/Linux box is wonderful to produce an end product (printed things or graphics for web pages), but if I have to share stuff with corp America, OO is not an option.

Can Slashdot please be the lone voice of reason that doesn't feed into the newsmedia's misuse of the word "hacker"?
No - Hackers == crackers.
Here's is my proof - a movie about hackers that break into things.
It wasn't called Crackers but Hackers!
:-P
I really feel for these poor misunderstood billionaires.
I prefer to state it this way:
I really feel for these poor misunderstood overnight billionaires.
When you make a billion that fast, you stepped in it BIG TIME.
The GAO should be looking into this.
Will the Pentagon's contradiction of the charges against WikiLeaks get as much play in the media as those original accusations did?"
No.
Rational discourse doesn't sell.
how about a regular bike? 10 miles per donut.
From what I see, a doughnut averages 300 calories and from what I see here you burn 30 calories per mile - so 10 miles per donut.
Hah! I got electric shoes! ~200,000 MPG equiv.
It doesn't sound like Dish is the good guys here either.

But with fuel at less than 3 USD per gallon, why bother?
That's going to change in the near future.
But still, turbines are pigs when it comes to fuel.
At least we know that America was as stupid then as it is now.

I think there's a lot of money to be made here.
But it' amazing how those same people don't have a problem with Medicare paying for those scooters you see all those obese people tooling around on.
Had to switch from Chrome to Firefox because for some crazy reason the Cut&Paste won't work.
Then there are books like Experimental Methods in RF Design that are selling for a huge amount of money used because, I think, Amazon has the new one listed misspelled.
The used book market can be really weird.

If it has butter or cream cheese icing, I'm game.

I thought it was Visual Basic.
