I believe it was stated that the cost to produce would be 20% less than LCD - however, the expected lifetime of a unit at this point is only 33-50% of LCD. If the cost difference can match the lifetime, and make them user-replaceable on a laptop, then we can have disposable screens...
MUAs need to talk SMTP to send mail AT ALL. You don't send outgoing mail via POP3 or IMAP - those are reading protocols.
What is desired is the ability to send outgoing mail via a different SMTP server depending on which incoming server is selected. I'd also want it to used the appropriate e-mail address depending on which inbox I'm in...
Let me preface this by saying that I am a UNIX bigot.
That said, a properly implemented MS Exchange system, in conjunction with Outlook, can provide a lot of features not found in your standard Sendmail/IMAP setup.
Outlook provides a lot of features of those do-all office systems that have been tried many times (and mostly failed, Notes being the biggest exception), including a well-integrated calendar system (users can schedule meetings by e-mail that can automatically be inserted into calendars and acknowledged by receipients). It requires Exchange for the back end, however (using Outlook as an IMAP client apparently breaks this).
It is used quite extensively at my current client, but isn't required. I had to opt for an IMAP solution for flexibility (long live Pine!)
Having worked at one of the UMass campuses for a number of years, they are yet again forgetting an important factor:
Who is going to support all these people with laptops?
They don't have the staff to handle the network needs. They don't have the staff to handle all the problem reports. They don't have the staff to train the less-technically-inclined.
Glad to be out in the real world now where there is at least a budget...
"Symbolic representation and assembly of auditory resonances to convey information"
Since the dawn of man a mechanism for the conveyance of information has been necessary - to avert wars, work effectively in groups, and simply provide entertainment. However, existing auditory mechanisms lack sustenance over long distances or time due to corruption that inevitably creeps in, as the transmission mediums are imperfect, and the storage systems have varying and unpredicitable rates of failure which increase with age.
This new system, (code named "Gammadelt"), would involve the symbolic representation of all information by breaking them up into specific auditory elements ("cues"), and then representing each cue with a symbolic representation.
In order to simplify the set of symbols, some audio cues may be represented by a combination of symbols. Additional symbols can also be added to alter the inflection or pronunciation of the cue.
The combined set of symbols is referred to as a "gammadelt".
In order to accomodate the widely different auditory communication mechanisms in use today, multiple gammadelts may be specified, each customized to the auditory communication mechanism it represents.
What was requested was that the ports that Napster uses be blocked at the schools' firewalls. I don't know what ports Napster uses, but there may be other, legitimate uses for those ports.
They will not punish the students who may or may not be using Napster without any hard evidence that copyright infringement is actually taking place on their network.

Netscape Communicator 4.X (well, at least 4.7X) has supported individual certificates (even more than one at a time) quite well on all platforms.
...with weapons, then I'll worry about it...

My original title got munged:

Think of everything that uses an alphabet...
