Gentoo doesn't scale well. It's a hobbiest's OS. If you are managing a large network of servers, Gentoo is just not a good solution. I know some people are using it but I can guarrantee you that they are spending alot more time administering their gentoo boxes than they would with a binary distro such as RedHat, SuSE or even Debian.
Well actually you don't have to buy their support every year. RHEL is a gpl'd product so the source code for it and all updates are really available. You just have to compile them yourself.
Okay we were talking servers not laptops but you can bypass the password never the less. Toshiba uses a parallel port loopback device to bypass the password so they can reset it.
1) Put a password on your bios. Someone will have to do some fancy soldering to replace it if they want to boot your machine without your password.
Bios Passwords can be removed by resetting the Bios. Not only that Bioses are for the most part no longer soldiered on the board but go in a socket and can be readily changed.
Yeah I read that pile of crap. There is no way people are going to continue to maintain older out of date versions of the their sites because W3C says so.
Information becomes out of date. If I leave up websites for computer parts which I sold 5 years ago I will continue to get requests for that hardware. It needs to be taken down. Websites are dynamic and change frequently and to expect them to maintain all the old links is just unrealistic.
Come on slashdot. Is new this slow that you have to use last weeks news? This has become a pattern. If it's too busy to announce the news when it happens, it's probably not worth listing period.
Grow up you pansy. Other sites change from time to time so if you link to them, links get broken. That's not google's fault, it's your responsibility to fix broken links. As a website developer, I don't know all the sites that may link to me. Maybe if I know about some I might accomidate the links but most I don't even know about. And to be honest, I don't really care in most case.
Well I am using it as a mailing list and it works well and better than yahoogroups lately though most of yahoo's problems with some ISPs have been resolved.
However does the Moderation work yet?
I tried to setup an announcement list where the members can make announcements which would be moderated. I attempted to send message that required moderation and was able to moderate the message. No email no mention of the queued messages on the site. Nothing. As such we are still using yahoogroups for that list.
but by "superior" I mean, "a machine that will run the latest games".
Slowly. Man if you want to play games, you don't buy from major OEMs. You either build your own or buy from a smaller manufacturer like Alienware that specializes in gaming.
Well since the Canadian Copyright laws state that copying music is legal, they have decided that every one is not a pirate but a privateer. Unlike a pirate, a Privateer's actions are legally sactioned by the Government.
suppose at some point IBM will get out of hardware entirely, and then it can re-name itself International Business Services or something else more appropriate.
Yeah IBM is primarily a Hardware company with or without a PC product. That's why they like Linux, they can spend more time on their hardware and less on maintaining their own versions of unix.
Besides with IBM's stable of hardware patents, they could stop making hardware and still bring in more revenue from hardware sales than other divisions.
No IBM is a hardware company and the PC portion has been a moneypit for years so selling it off is not a surprise and really won't affect a majority of it's current business. Which is Mainframe and Server sales.
Yeah I don't think you can consider Dell Desktops to be superior to anything. Sure some models are alright but their bottom line stuff is complete crap.
BTW IBM hasn't made their own desktops for years, they just brand them. Like most of HP's products now. (Hmm I wonder if HP makes desktops anymore. They don't make scanners, CD/DVD Burners, Not many printers)
Because they shoot the episodes so far in advance, it was leaked in the summer that he lost on his 75th episode. Though I had my doubts, obviously that was probably a credible leak.

Of course but it's still done whether against the license or not.
Just don't get him and Dan Bernstein going in the same thread. There's been some classic flame wars between those two Zealots.
Unless you were just playing around -- in which case, you're unlikely to be using Oracle because of the cost!
I know lots of people that install Oracle to just play around with it. You can install it for free. Oracle only really charges for the support.
If you want to run their software without the support, they could care less. Just don't come running to them for support without the proper licensing.
Dell has sold clusters on the top 500 list. Those machines aren't running windows.
Or you can do what alot of people do. Buy one supported copy so you can download the binary updates and install it on multiple machines.

Actually this is complete crap. The supreme court ruled that you can share music files from your harddrive under the current Canadian Copyright laws.
A Pentium 60 is much better for warming your abode.

The markup on Personal Computers is more like 5%.
Anyone know if they ever got Linux to be able to actually write to NTFS?
Yeah you can write to NTFS now.
Talk about old stuff. Man slashdot is getting behind. This stuff was anounced at Intel's development conference in like April.
Tell that to those Good O'boys Millitias that dot the midwest and western states.
