(as far as I know, no one in Canada has sued McDonald's because their coffee was too hot!)
There was a very good reason for said woman to sue McDonalds.
Basicaly the coffee served to her was so hot it melted through the plastic cup it came in, and caused third (second?) degree burns. (This was in a part of America where foodstuffs are supposed to be sold so they're edible/drinkable immediately post sale).
She had asked them for the costs of medical treatment, and they fobbed her off. If they want to be assholes, she had every right to sue.
" Since StarOffice has a programming script, I don't see why it also won't be vulnerable to macro viruses "
Seeing as the source code is going to be available. You can always disable them completly. Not that this would be an easy task.
IIRC, Microsoft refused to release a seperate version with macros disabled completely. The easier Sun makes it to get rid of macros, completely, the better; for Sun.
Here was me just thinking it was the American spelling...
...but on a more serious tangent. Whoreallycares? When it comes right down to it, is it not communication that is important? If it communicates the intended message, then so be it.
Spelling, in this day and age, is the least of our worries. And if it is the only thing that grates on you, then count yourself lucky.
From what I see, this wasn't hacking, nor was it cracking. It was social engineering....let's see how long it takes the press to cotton on to/that/ one..

[disclaimer] I've never left New Zealand in my life, this is how I think it works. ie: The details are probably wrong but that's the jist of it.
The size of the source: If you want to contribute you have to get into the source - this means read/read/read some some source to just try to get how the whole thing is working this takes times.
Yes. I would love to roll around in all that lovely - useful - source code. But with my current tech / work / reading slashdot lifestyle, I simply don't have the time to:
1. Get up to speed. 2. Keep up to speed.
When they roll out a stable version; wild horses won't be able to hold me back.
I see it as the ultimate learning tool. How many programs of this magnitude do people get the opportunity to participate in?
really is painfull with a 33.6 even with a 56 k modem
Emphasis mine.
[sniff]... So true. (Although it beats the socks off my previous two modems, 1200 and 14.4)
I doubt that - most of these pages have many images and javascript and other such nonsense. It's all about the (advertising) benjamins.
If you don't like it. Do it better, yourself.
Stop whining.
As for the JavaScript/images... That is so a non-issue. Look at this ma... [click]... JavaScript off... [click]... Images off... [clickity click]... Junkbuster on...
It's my understanding that the SuSe box set comes with 6 CD's. I would assume one of these would be a base CD, which would be freely rip-able. So if you had bought/were to buy it, it would not be a problem to burn copies of the base CD, the remaining CD's would be the legally shaky ones.
Yes, yes, yes.. I will admit that I missed the boat on the glory days. But my first computer was a (this is about the time 286's were kings - if my memory serves me right, 1985-6) Acorn Electron, with a Plus 1.
My only regret is that I never had anyone to teach me the zen art of programming it.
As hard as I tried I could never quite figure out how to do much with it. As I had no manuals, only the tape drive and a couple of games.
I spent/hours/ trying to figure it out. I was over the moon when I figured out how to turn the tape drive motor on and off; it wasn't useful... But I didn't care.
And I only figured out the most basic of BASIC commands...
anybody else remember the indirection operators ? and !?
Wasn't ? print shorthand? ie:
10 ? "I rule" 20 GOTO 10
Or am I getting it and QuickBasic mixed up (my memories a bit foggy, as I never managed to accomplish anything with it - but damn fun)
Thinking of QuickBasic.. I remember when I figured out that microsoft products sucked (ok, low blow..but it's stuck with me). I wrote a BBS door (Shitty Little Movie Reviewer v1.0b if it happens to still exist..)in QuickBasic 4.5, and it worked perfectly. But it was/slow/ even in local mode. (A 486DX33, was my second computer) Then I ported it (ie: Only changed syntax etc) to Borland Pascal 7.0. And/my god/ it was fast.
Oh wow... [flashback]
Does anyone else remember the cheat for Gauntlet on the Acorn Electron?? It would take control of the reset key, so it would just start again when reset, so the only way to get rid of it was to power cycle. But, if you hit reset enough it'd eventually give you 99 bombs and 99 lives... Oh wow..and Frogger, and Jetpack.. Man I wish I could've had a decent manual for that baby.
As an anymous poster said earlier, this is getting to be "news for daytraders, stocks that matter."
Yes! I whole-heartedly agree with the jist of both yours and said AC's comment. I have yet to find a reason to filter out any of the stories posted, but as of late the business to tech ratio's become a bit much; IMHO. Or could such stories be shafted under the money topic, IIRC, which already exists.
On a funnier note, my mom bought a bunch of white erasers and gave me some. "Mom," I said, "Why'd you give me this f*8cking eraser?" She was appalled. "But Mom," I said, "That's what it says right here on the side "Fuh King". It's a Fuh King
Nothing strange there.. One of the cities in New Zealand is Whakatane; pronounced fuck-a-ta-ne. Which is of course a Maori word, and not English. So has quite a different meaning.
I'm sorry, but
linux doesn't work that way (if you make it easy to use, it won't be linux anymore).
I do hate to be pedantic (and to stress a point, I have no real reason to be pedanitc)...but; Linux will/can work that way. What is it you think Amiga's going to do with Linux? [pedantic] Linux is a kernel. K e r n e l. [/pedantic]
It will still be linux. And I quote someone, "Linux is linux is linux" (whos name has long since slipped my mind, although I probably have taken said quote completely out of context).
The mind boggles at how much faster it is compared to my first tape drive. Acorn Electron (souped up BBC-A or BBC-B, can't remember)..man that baby rocked.
Is it "so bad it's good" kinda schlock type bad, or just plain old "so bad it's unbearable" kinda bad???
It's personal. For me it was good, because I've managed to get lots of other people to see it. And no one but me so far has [openly] liked it. It's very much in the middle.
I do recommend watching it, just get as many people to watch it with you as you can.. It's more fun that way. Just don't blame me for all the lost friends. A definate B grade classic.
I can't remember how much is on the video cover, but (the cover's pretty clear it's a Jurrasic Park parody) it's cheaply done. But better than what it's parodying.
I mean sure, there are thousands of programs that do comparisons of text(or text in non-plain-text formats) files. Wouldn't this be the patent-able bit? If so, methinks there's plenty of previous art; as it was patented in 1989...plenty of time for unix gurus to come up with something.
Splitting the screen so the compared source files are both displayed simultaneously (which is what the article implied - if I am not wrong) is just a logical extension. Is it not?
I don't know how many ideas I've come up with, with never seeing what's already been done, and then discovering that someone else has already done such a thing.

I guess that's one way to avoid being slashdot'd.

I realise there's room for confusing in the TLA department. But naming a something FIDNET.. That's gotta cause confusion. FIDNET -- FIDONET.
I don't expect anyone who hasn't used a dial up BBS (Hell, I still ring one to play LORD) to understand.
No actually, I correct myself. Anyone who's ever used FidoNet (and knows what it is) will be smart enough to know the difference.

My wild guess, based on my many years of having - literally - no experience with said field; is that it's simulations of growing stuff in space.
I could be wrong though. Ignorance is bliss.

You want the truth.. You got it. :)
Point your browser at:

Highlander III was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, the only reason I saw it twice was the fact that I fell asleep the first time.
/now/ and get it out. You'll thank me for it.
PS: If you haven't read the article; what I've said won't make much sence.
PPS: The worst movie I've ever seen was Chicken Park... Go to a video place
Leave me out of this...
Is it just me, or does this make no sence.

I don't know about Europe, but down here in New Zealand, Pepsi MAX is caffine free.
I'd better clarify myself quickly.. I'm already in one flame war because of my anti-american views.
I feel that the USA has great ideals, as did the USSR. You can see the parrallel.
And I'd be the last to say that the rest of the world is perfect.
Even my own corner (New Zealand) has its distinct problems.
....hmm...I'm way off topic aren't I? Better stop.
