I have been using Ratpoison on of my (small resolution 800x600 with 64 Megs ram) machines for months. Once you get used to having those extra pixels and that extra memory, its hard to go back.
Yea you have to give Opera credit for innovation. But then again, when you are trying to compete in a market where the rest of the choices are free, you had better be creative.
As far as IE falling behind. I had a nice flight yesterday and in an ironic move, my wife had slipped "The Road Ahead V 1.0 in my backpack, and it was the only thing I had to read. (For those that remember V1.0 was the version where Bill Gates stressed that the internet was just a "passing fad" and not worth Microsoft's time and effort.)
A pc for blind people with no hands who want to pay an extra 1K for a laptop type computer without that nagging screen or keyboard to get in the way.
Seriouslly, the cd drive, memory, HD are all laptop components....the price is $2000 -- sans screen and keyboard. What market are they shooting for here?
I always find it a good laugh to see people paying MORE (or the same) for items on ebay (in some cases used items) then it would cost to go to the local Best Buy or CompUSA and plop down the cash for -- and get to enjoy instantlly. You go the Ebay route and it is just like Russian Roullette. You not only pay megabucks + shipping, you are not even sure when and if you will get the item. And if you do get the item -- it may not be as advertised. I had a friend who saved 40 bucks on a robotic lawnmower. The only problem is, when he got it, it was 3 firmware releases behind and had recalled tires. Since he did not purchase it from the company, he had to pony up over 100 bucks for firmaware upgrades and new tires. The company never would have sold him such an outdated item.
It was really a no brainer that some distribution would finally decide to try to piece together the different UI's, and at least try to make them look similar to one another. Imagine a bathroom with a gold shower head, a chrome drain, and marble knobs. Things look much better when they are in sync. Kudos to RH for finally getting the ball rolling in this area.
Why does Tivo have to be such a big company? Why can they (or someone else) not be a success with a user base of around 500,000? -- Where are all their costs? Why can't companies scale nowdays? Why do companies need HUGE market numbers to show a profit? I guess the same could be said for the death of the "mom and pop" and mid-sized ISP's -- everyone that is not the size of a fortune 500 company can't compete? Where is this economy going that only the big dogs can run in the park. Hell -- inderectlly this even relates to "companies" like Eazel that require 30+ million just to produce a file browser? -- Whats up with that?
would be a better place if everyone developed and tested with a 200 MMX with 64 megs of RAM. Sure, most people have upgraded -- but you can bet your ass that if you can get something to run good on the above config -- that it would really smoke on some these furnaces of today. Just think of all the memory leaks that would get fixed before release...All of a sudden a program "appearing" 45 seconds after startup on this machine would not be acceptible.
Or better yet -- you all could chip in and buy me a new laptop -- and I will stop whining.
Am I missing something? I got a cordless, optical, rechargable mouse at CompUSA over a year ago....For 15 bucks no less....I think I will check MySQL's bug database and see if there is a bug that confuses September 30,2002 with Jan 1, 2001. I thought of/. as a place to see the cutting edge gadgets? Or maybe it is the MySQL bug that confuses Sept 30 with April 1.
Question
Can I allow my friends to have a copy of any software I obtain?
Answer
The Lindows.com Insider program is designed to be exclusive to the individual that signs up. As an Insider member, we ask that you not distribute copies of the LindowsOS to other individuals and that you abide by the end user license agreement that comes with our software.
Damn: I was looking for someone to give me a copy of KDE or GImp. I need to be l33t.
This morning (2:28am, EDT), I received an E-mail from Y.H. Lee, the Chief Engineer of iRiver's products. He has informed me that they are currently porting the fixed-point Ogg Vorbis decoder (Tremor) to their product. We will endeavour to assist them in any way we can.
In addition to letting iRiver know that we stand behind them ready to assist with technical issues, I believe a huge thanks is in order to the people who have contacted iRiver asking them to support our format. We're indebted to all of you who have posted looking for Vorbis support on this thread, as well as all of you who have sent iRiver E-mails and called them on the telephone.
Let's wait and see...and encode away boys and girls.
Brittney honey -- it is not music sharing that is causing a drop in your record sales...Hell just ask Tiffany & Paulla Abdual (sp?) -- they went through the same tough times, and could not even blame the big bad music sharing thugs. And to M&M -- What would it be 15.5 million instead of 15.3 million units moved if there was no music shareing? (Somewhere Vannila Ice is dreaming of being so popular that millions would download his music for free...)
Is tinkering like this not the only reason while it is understandable that so many distros exist -- and why open source kicks ass over closed source? I mean -- what you do to seperate yourself from the next guy is a noble move in such a crowded arena.
Does your typical mac user even care if his/her CPU is 13.4% slower than it's intel counterpart? I am willing to bet that the reasons why they chose Apple in the first place will way outnumber a slightly slower CPU. (Plus with all the licensing and proprietary closed source layers -- I doubt you will ever see Macs make an inroads in the server market no matter the CPU speed...)
I here ya. I am 0 for 5 on trying to get a webcam that will work for Linux. What are the odds that the 20+ webcams that do work in Linux -- also happen to be the 20+ webcams that you can never find in the stores....
I would love the wireless cam from Dlink. No money right now. What I do have is an old laptop with a wireless card. I have purchased 3 or 4 "webcams", and have yet to find one that works on Linux. (Webcams are weird in the fact that the same exact brand may use 4 or 5 different chips during a production run -- and usually only one or two of them have Linux support, so it really is a crapshoot). Does anyone know of a drop dead 100% chance of working cam for Linux that I could use. (without having to go to a museum and steal it from an antique exibit.)
Clean Flicks are only doing this because there is a sizeable market for their "one of a kind" product. To someone higher up in that company that is a niche market with many dollars to be cornered. Don't think for a second that if the movie companies provided their own clean versions that these clean flick people would not be out selling crack to babies. It's all about trying to dig into the wallets in a unique market.
It's not about giving the "moral majority" the priveledge of viewing this art (even in it's crippled form). It's about identifying a market and driving the hammer home, all the way to the bank. (I lived in Utah most of my life, and you would be queasily surprised at how the rich got rich in that neck of the woods.)
thats why IBM is spending billions on Linux. To finally marry Tux with a "boxen" that has the cycles to watch a DVD on Linux. (I don't own a DVD for my computer -- but was plenty pink in the face upon blindly bragging to a Linux/Win fence sitter than Linux was finally "there" enough for him to get his lips off Bill's backside and play his shiny new DVD's on his trusty new AMD 1800+. Well -- I ate some crow (and bought some rounds) over that one. He is back to being convinced that Linux is still only good for routing packets and mail.
There has to be more to Yoda than meets the eye. First he (apparentlly) has no clue as to what is going on around him in the most recent films. Second -- Their is a questionable amount of mystery as to why he went into hiding during the last 3 star wars movies. I think Brin has a good theory that Lucas could use to tie up the MANY loose ends in this story. I just can't help but think that Yoda's mysterious actions and apparent ignorance is the biggest outstanding mystery of all.

Is there some way I can play Diablo inside of Tetris? Sometimes waiting on those blocks to drop can be a real bore.

What do you bet that 80% of the 80% are also pirated copies of windows?

How does that old song go: "Stealing from a thief"

lets rename Apache to mod_perl/Apache
or PHP/Apache or Mysql/Apache.
Well said. Don't even get me started on TV Cards.
What if I take Hurd and surround it with non GNU libraries and tools -- I could call it:
NON-GNU/NON-Linux
