y'know... 500,000 Playstations... 260,000,000+ Americans... if ya do the math, and see just how LOW a percentage of the US is actually going to get to even use this thing... It makes you wonder if the Playstation is a topic worthy of 3 articles on the/. home page...
Is this where Laptops are heading? Does a person really ned a HandyCam with an onboard PC? I seriously doubt it's capabilities for any seriuos Video Editing, seems to me like this is another interesting sony gadget, destined for the *ignor* pile.
...that the key to getting designers to adhere to standards, is consumer awareness. If the average cell phone buyer knew that support for CSS can SIGNIFIGANTLY increase the quality and ease of use of his/her online experience, they would demand vendors carry standard compliant devices. Much the same way Dolby certifies amplifiers with the Prologic tag.
CSS really kicks some butt, and it gives designers an extra tool to make those damn tiny screens one step closer to functional.
"Dreams are just the body's way of clearing out the mental ''in-box'', Stickgold said."
Ok, now all we have to do is code a little VBS Dream Virus, which when the brain is clearing it's "in-box", will be relayed into other peoples dreams, and so-on... thus creating a pseudo-mind-control method... First Virus... - Vote Gore.
You know... everytime I read about companies packing more and more features/gadgets/gizmos into handhelds, it makes me wonder...
First off... do manufacturers actually expect people to use these things (Beyond the PDA/Email features already available in any hand held worth its salt) It seems to me that the average consumer is not interested in a 2.5"(diagonal) Bernard Shaw while waiting for the bus.
Call me a techno-peasant if you must... but it seems to me that current handhelds provide most of the access/features that a peson would EVER need. (Email, Messaging, News Services)
Do we really need to take handhelds to the level of Laptop/Desktop computers? (Intell intends a 600MHZ PIII for micro notebooks in (I believe) Q3 2001) Is this not just another example of us getting carried away with the latest trend?
Web access anywhere is a pretty powerfull thing, but so is a Cummins Diesel Engine, and no one has had the need to integrate a VCR into one of them.
"Powered by a single AA battery, the iDragon mP6 processor with its superior three-scalar multimedia architecture played back entire VCD movies or MP3 music for many hours. In the demonstration, the voltage of the battery started from 1.5V and was down to 1.1V at the end. This shows that mP6 can dynamically operate effectively in a wide range of voltages. "
An entire VCD with an AA Battery? Now that is slick... and even though the Voltage slipped from 1.5V to 1.1V, the processor remained functional? Man, this is very cool... Anyone know how the Transmetta chips take a slipping Voltage? can it handel this?
"A 15 km-wide miniature magnetosphere one astronomical unit from the Sun would feel 1 to 3 Newtons of force from the solar wind," says Gallagher, "That's enough to accelerate a 200 kg spacecraft from a dead stop to 80 km/s (180,000 mph) in only 3 months.
I have been reading alot about alternative propulsion as of late, and this seems by far the most realistic approach. While we are not going to see this in action for some time, it opens a ton of possibilities for countries like China that are just venturing into manned space flight.
With the amount of money the US Government has tied up in the Shuttle program, it is unlikely that they will even attempt implimenting this kind of technology on anything other than a "Test Platform" for at least 10 or so years. However, a country like China that is relatively new to the "Space Race" could easily use this kind of technology to attempt large scale interplanetary expiditions, with a far shorter time-line than competing countries.
Wouldn't it be something if the Chinese were the first to put a man on Mars? Don't laugh, it could happen.
The last few flights that I've been on explicitly prohibited the use of DVD drives (along with CD drives/players and MDs)
What????
I have traveled extensivly over the past 4 years, on both domestic and intenational flights, and I have NEVER encountered this. In fact, the last two airlines I traveled on (British Air and Air Canada) provided a power outlet for my laptop. There are no regulations regarding the use of Laptop Computers (accept durring Takoff and Landing) on ANY airline I have ever used. Do you think the average business traveler would put up with not being able to work on a long flight?
I think you are mistaken sir, or you were flying on the MPAA airline.
Think about it...
You are at the Bar, it is $2.00 Draft night, and 10 beers later you have spent 50 bucks!
And you thought you just tipped well? No way buddy, as soon as ya get a litle tanked, the Barkeep is charging ya full price...
Trust me, I have worked at that bar...
What Amazon is doing is no different. They are taking advantage of the confused (although not neccessarily drunk) consumer, and fixing their prices accordingly.
Preparation
Using the Dremmel, remove any pieces of steel from your existing ATX case that may be blocking your shiny new P4 mainboard. Loosly mount the board in your ATXcase, and mark the screw holes. Using the Dremmel again, drill out the neccessary holes. Roughly mark the area BELOW the processor. Using the Hot Glue Gun, mount the cork halves on the marked area under the processor. (some shaving may be required)
Installation
Re-mount the main board, processor and RAM in the ATX case, and secure with screws (Be sure the cork is not too high, hairline fractures are a bad thing)
Drink the can of Lager while booting up your new P4 in an ATX Case!
Note: You will still need to buy a new power supply (More on how to rig the old one in my next post)
I really think it is a little too early to be declareing a winner to a war that has hardly begun. Don't forget that Micropayment is not a really huge item as of yet... and don't think that other payment (Both c2b and b2b) options won't fight for a piece of this market. Companies like Verisign, etc. Even though PayPal is here and now, the reality is that that can change in a matter of weeks (or days).
Online payment options (not just for micropayment) have a long way to go before the "Defacto Standard" is set.
You are somewhat correct, however the difference is that from the Lycos Page, you can download the file WITHOUT LEAVING THE SITE. Hence: a direct link to the DeCSS software.
"NVIDIA dont want to support open source drivers, so i honestly dont see why any open source supporter would use any of there cards."
The answer to this is simple... even an Open Source Zealot on a tight budget likes to play Quake.

Just some food for thought.

Send Linus flowers for a week, then, camp outside his ofice at Transmeta, and ask him for change or code snippets everytime he walks by.
That should get his attention, and from there the shit rolls down hill!

Now, if we can just tweak this a wee bit, we will be able to have it design and manufacture Java Coders, Phone Cards, and links to DeCSS...
I would love to se the MPAA sue a robot.
This sounds pretty silly, but go to Lycos' FTP Search and type in DeCSS and boom, DeCSS.zip is the first thing you find.
This whole thing is starting to get that "I am so sick of it I am gonna vomit" Lewinski feel to it.
only for the high bandwidth... but this thread should not turn into a Mozilla vs IE debate, we had that one already :)
