Thought everyone got the memo: There'll never be a stable release of enlightenment. I've been using it for over a year. I update it between 5 to 8 times in a month via bleeding edge svn and am yet to encounter any stability issues.
It's been my fave running on top of a minimal debian/ubuntu install.
No. The app thing is needed to provide a curated experience for the inexperienced but please don't prevent me from sideloading my own apps. I wonder how long till apple decides you cannot install your own apps from the internet on your macbook cos every thing you need is in the mac app store.
And additionally, whether you believe it's "right" or not, Netflix can only do what it does because there are copy protection mechanisms in place to ensure respect of the copyrights of the material they are displaying.
There might be a way to create an open source Netflix client that respects copyright, but it would be difficult (technologically, and perhaps legally depending on the license you're using), and it would be a hard sell to the copyright owners.
Plus, I mean, come on - Netflix streaming works on PS3, Xbox, wii, mac, windows, iphone, ipad, a number of set-top TV boxes like the Roku and the WD ones, several TVs with integrated instant watch, and several Blu-Ray players. They're trying to get as many eyes in front of their product as they can. It's not like they're forcing you into a small subset of products.
you are totally correct. besides even if they do, some within our beloved opensource community will start wining about the binary blobs etc. i guess we can't all be opensource purists. If someone wants to charge for their work it's up to them. i guess we need to learn to live with that. we can't force the whole world to be opensource communists - oops i didn't just say that!
As always, 'science' has given us yet another excuse to continue doing the debilitating things we do. Soon we'll be able to blame even the most heinous crimes on our genes!
By the way, this isn't news, the apostle said almost 2000 years ago, "For I know that inside me dwelleth no good thing". The sinful nature of man is inherent and genetic. The Bible tells me so.
Remember, the Book of Genesis originated from India not Hebrews...
Really? I'd like some references if you don't mind.
Anyway, first like a sig declared, "In the beginning was nothing, and then nothing exploded", now we get "The water just came from the rocks" like the same rocks in other planets.
Don't ever forget that the things that we see are temporal, but it's the unseen that is permanent
uhm, don't we have mozilla firefox mobile on the iphone? and on android as well?
BTW, that was a smart move by them. when they 'enable' the app store feature, it'll be interesting to see how apple reacts to it.
My God, my God, why has thou forsaken me - Jesus' words to God when He hung on Calvary's tree dying for the sins of the whole world. phew. twas worth it.
My main complaint about Ubuntu is the way they keep dumbing down the GUI with every release (things started to go steeply downhill with Karmic).
Maybe they should make another 'buntu variant (Probuntu? Powerbuntu?) with a Gnome-based GUI less oriented at totally helpless noobs. The more geek-oriented 'buntu could also come with a more geek-oriented selection of packages installed out of the box. Mainline Ubuntu would then be free to cater to the n00borns with the Unity UI - this is a good thing now because Ubuntu can be super-duper-thinking-hurts-simple for noobs, and "powerbuntu" is available for the power users. Now both groups of users could get what they want, no need to compromise.
No dear Sir, they won't make a probuntu just for you. go grab debian and put gnome on it. there are options out there with gnome for you.
i stopped using ubuntu for performance reasons i run e17 on debian. not as slick as ubuntu but it meets my performance needs well. the pro guys should leave ubuntu alone. they are doing a great job of dumbing things down for newbies. that's commendable. If you still love pain and getting dirty with the command line. there are a whole plethora of options out there - Arch, Debian, etc.
most of the western world stole or disregarded patents till they found their feet. only Switzerland and maybe few others had some integrity in this matter.
Don't forget that japanese and americans did the same before they found their feet technologically. America now feels threatened and suddenly feels the need for IP protection and fair trade
hmm. keyword:"most of the time" - I for one wouldn't like something like my brakes to work "most of the time"
Just thought i'd chip that in. while i'm a huge fan of android. I think we have to grow up from the geeky mentality and deliver solutions that are excellent, stable and consistent. People want stuff that works. period.
I discovered the origins of the universe a long time ago when i read this sentence: "In the beginning, God ..."
I'm wondering how HTC is feeling now, after paying for those undisclosed patents to Microsoft?
It's not about whether it can be got elsewhere, it's all about whether they can mine it as cheaply as China does.

i guess that good old capitalism is biting back eh?
CHIMP - Computer Human Interaction for Management Professionals . There you have it!
I guess we need both kinds of people, the idealists that keep the system clean and the pragmatists that make the system work.
Yup, that's why the likes of Linux Mint are still forever relevant. we need pragmatists to temper the idealists at times.

As the old saying goes, they don't make 'em like they used to.

Let's not forget webkit didn't fall from the sky but was developed from KHTML sources that were/ and is opensource.
yes, when you watch Firefly or Serenity, you'll understand why chinese is the future :-)
When I can comfortable run nightly, beta, and stable versions of firefox in linux then I'll know this has been a hit. looking forward to that.
Really? have you tried running nightly, beta and stable versions of firefox on linux at the same time?
The BIOS wasn't, it was reverse engineered by clone makers.
Thank God they didn't have the foresight to patent the BIOS. Life would have suck big time in our day and age!

general consensus or general conspiracy? I don't mean to be cynical but that don't sound right.

I stand corrected then. It's good to have a balance of opinions. cheers.
