We know you know and we acknowledge your geekiness. But I believe we are referring to the general populace which may not be as enlightened as you are.

Yes, every world power gets its time. Egypt, Greece, Assyria,Rome,Babylon, etc. If Jesus Christ tarries, i'd love to see how the next 50 years plays out. interesting times we live in.
Heck, their biggest competitor in their fastest-growing market is basing their entire web experience on Apple's browser engine, so it doesn't seem like Apple is too worried about competition there.
Let's not forget webkit's roots - KHTML - which they took and improved upon. Let's not be too cheeky in calling it Apple's browser engine. The opensource licence requires them to use, improve and release the source so others can do the same. many unsung heroes/companies have been doing that for ages. The fact that Apple did it to the original KHTML source doesn't doesn't make the derived product their own.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
you can do video to video calls using fring [fring.com] app on a humble Nokia E71, or a phone that has a front facing camera. I do salute them on their ability to hype 'NEW' features.
interestingly the first time i used that app was two days ago, when i called my girlfriend on her iPhone 3GS. she could see me but i couldn't see her cos she didn't have frontfacing cam.
I think everyone should learn about marketing, it really brings in the money!
You're right on the money, it's not hard to detect apple fanboism and bias from an article. Interestingly Proverbs 18:17 says "The first to plead his case seems right, Until another comes and examines him."
that it is Apple which has caused this change in direction.
Google's Android apps are written predominantly in Java. Apple recently made an edict that all iPhone apps must be developed in some form of C (or Javascript, but that's not Java).
So, Google would now be required to completely rewrite the app. No wonder they're "decommitting."
Wow, you hit the nail on the head. That must be it!
Nokia is like the one exception in that they bundle Ovi Maps with their cellphones by default. I would hope this eventually gets standard, rather than relying on a web connection for navigation.
Just a quick note. Nokia bundles Ovi maps with their phones but you still have to download the map data for free onto them. By default the phones rely on a web connection for navigation.
Hmm, reminds me how Apple improved on Nvidia's Optimus in their latest macbook pro ranges. Turn off the on-chip graphics when not in use and use the discreet when there's cause to do so. Optimus, from what I gather, just switches to the discrete graphics whilst leaving the on-chip graphics running. Clever huh?

The government will subsidize the cost. I don't expect it to cost $35 overseas. The aim is to get it into the colleges and villages.
