It doesn't matter one red penny if Star Office or any other 'office' program for Linux can read the files if they can't EXECUTE THE MACROS OR UNDERLYING CODE. If there were a way to get current Excel 95/97/2000 files to run under Linux the way they run under MS Office in windows I could get the whole company moved to Linux as fast as I could get the OS installed on the machines.
A Linux version of MS Office will make it so more people and companies will be willing to move to Linux. The company is aware of how much they can save if they use Linux, BUT the fact that the spreadsheets and other items won't run under Linux makes the move impossible.
Anything that makes it easier for people to move to Linux away from MS operating systems is a good thing. Even if that thing is MS software.
Reading files is trivial. Getting them to work as designed/expected is not.
Well, I really didn't think that a) someone asking slashdot, and b) someone inviting introverts to a party... Would be forcing the anti-social ill-mannered sad-sacks into going.
What the person should do is just plan a normal corporate/company party, invite the ill-mannered/anti-social/sad-sacks, and if they come that's good. If not, too hell with them. The real paradox is that if their not invited they'll get pissed off because it'll give them flashbacks when they weren't picked for the high-school cirle jerk. Others will get pissed off for being invited. It's a no-win situation.
Here's a few points the losers don't seem to get...
I'm sure they'll be remembered when the next raise and/or promotion comes around. It behooves people to go to the parties. If anything to just show up, shake a few hands, laugh at some stupid assinine jokes, then leave. More corporate politics goes on at parties than in the workplace. Geeks just need to grasp the concept that their not 'special' or 'irreplacable'. '31331 sKiLz' don't matter as much as how they play the political game.
The stupid party is just the place to, perhaps, (and with this crowd I really mean 'perhaps'), meet that cute/attractive person of the opposite sex beyond asking her to take a look at the new bit of code to see if it makes her nipples hard.
The REAL competition for your job, raises, and promotions WILL be there. They'll be there will bells on, smiles on their faces, and their lips on the ass of every boss and/or possible boss that shows up. Make sure you at least blow their ass a passing kiss.
If anything else there's usually free food and booze to throw down before the loser runs off to play Quake.
Ya go that right. Anti-social IS a bad thing in the long run, but anti-social people are too short sighted to see that untill it's too late and all they have left is playing spank-the-monkey by themselves in a Saturday night.
This sort of thing was being done on Sinclair ZX81's wayyyyyy back in the early 80's. Check back issues of Sync magazine. Been there, done that, nothing more to see here, move along.
It's the paperwork. Paperwork needs people to process. Lots, and lots of people. By not moving any services to the WWW, they ensure their own job security.
Actually, photo documentation is necessary for shipping through ANY carrier. The company I work for manufacturers turbine pumps. They photograph everything that goes out. You'd be surprised at how much shit that a stupid/drunken/ignorant teamster can fuck up. Once a shipper actually managed to bend a pump, not just a little bit, but to where if you drew a straight line through the pump starting at one end it would be off center a foot and a half at the other end over a distance of six feet.
It's like teamsters just go out of their fucking way to screw shit up.
"The G4 case clearly was not stabilized and protected from potential forces subjected to the outside of the box. Take a look at the factory box your G4 came in. Same with the monitor. There are several inches of solid styrofoam padding on each side of the case, form fit to both the item and the exterior of the box. Some tightly packed packing peanuts or other packing material would have helped a lot in this case if originial packing material was missing. If the exterior of the box was damaged and packing material was falling out, UPS would have taped it back together (besides, they don't want to clean up loose packing material everywhere). "
You kidding me? Look at the damn box. It looks like it was run over with a forklift... repeatedly.
The whole comparison is completely pointless. The majority of machines running Intel processors are running Windows. The majority running Motorola processors are running some version of the Mac OS. Might as well have Car and Driver running a comparison of a Jaguar S-type and a 10-ton dumptruck. (which processor is the equiv of a Jag is left as an excercise for the reader)
Well, Orrin Hatch and Chuck Scumer don't think people should have any privacy the continuing thread is they, themselves, are not entitled to privacy either. So, the only way to fight bastards like this that don't have any respect for the Constitution or the principles this country was founded on is to dig into their privacy, and release that information to the media.
If people could see the construction of their houses without paint, paneling, dry wall, etc... getting in the way they'd crap themselves. If people could crawl underneath bridges and see the corrosion and bird shit they'd crap themselves also. Software is suppose to work and be outwardly pleasing. Nobody gives a flying fuck if the code is beutifull on the inside. Just as nobody gives a fuck if a fat person or thin person is beutifull on the inside. Anybody who compares software engineering to physical engineering needs to have their heads examined then set apon with a ball peen hammer.
I guess they expect ISP's to have someone monitor what mail comes through their box(en) 24/7. Once in awhile I came across a sircam load going through and intercept it when I can, notify the person who's machine is infected, tell them how they can get rid of it, and if thier on a static IP I block it untill they get it fixed. But, that's only a small percentage of what comes in and goes out.
It's the responsibility of the user to keep his/her machine free from viruses so things like the sircam doesn't happen.
I don't see it as a big problem. Someone would only need to make predatory nanites that search out, and attack the sniffer nanites. Either destroying them, or reprogramming/refitting them into predatory nanites.

Sure, I now realize that your company cannot exist without you! I cower before your greatness!

The keyword there is 'some'. 'Some' dodge the bullet.

Heretic!
In America there's nothing outside of the cubical and/or work. Report to the nearest reeducation center immediately!

I really don't expect much more from a bunch of beer-swilling, fart lighting teamsters.

Considering the current patent, you should be ashamed to be associated with them in any way.

Absolutely. The one with the most toys wins.
