This is all going to come down to retaliation by the internet at large. Not linking to Alta Vista, and basically making Alta Vista and it's partners persona non-grata on the internet. They've basically been allowed patents on fundamental and non-original items that have been in use since the net started, and many have been in use since relational databases were first being used. Screw em, and screw anybody that sleeps with em.

Star Trek drek aside... We ARE on Sol 3, a little planet we call Earth (dirt). I have no doubt that every single planet out there is called the linquical(sp, no don't correct, just go with it) equivilent(sp again) of 'dirt'. No doubt this would screw up any automatic translation system. We say "Welcome to Earth", the translation system translates that into 'dirt' then into the aliens equivilent of 'dirt', and the aliens hear "Welcome to Zorphlin." The aliens look at each other and think "gee, what a coincidence, their planets name is the same as ours!", or they think "hey, these guys are screwing with us!" Either way it could get confusing.

It's an example of social prejudice. Equating Germans and actions of modern Germany with Nazi's is just as ignorant as equating Jews with thieves, blacks with spear chucking, Latino's with being sombrero wearing boozers, and asians with Imperial Japan or 'Charlie'. Still today, especially in America, people of German descent are refered to as Nazi's, krauts, etc... As are people of Japanese descent refered to as Tojo, slant, etc... More people of German or Japanese descent need to take the stance that I have and start saying "I wasn't there, I had nothing to do with it, so fuck off."
