  1. are we really surprised? on Stacked Carnivore Review Team · · Score: 1

    1) This is the FBI we're talking about, they're going to get someone to a) review it and b) say it's great!

    2) Whatever the review says, is anyone going to be happy knowing that their e-mail is going through Carnivore?

    3) Even if they published the full source code on the net for everyone to see, would anyone really trust that it's the same source that's compiled into the production box?

People, c'mon. There is really only one conclusion from the entire Carnivore ordeal: The FBI will soon have the potential to look at everybody's e-mail, so protect yourself accordingly. All this getting it reviewed crap is just a front. These guys are the government version of Microsoft; they want their dirty little fingers in Everything!

  2. DSL in Canada on On the Reliability of DSL Providers... · · Score: 2

Business DSL in Canada is getting quite good. They install within a couple weeks and guarantee uptime of 99.5% (they'll have someone on site in 4 hours if there is an issue). Plus they give 2.2MBps and 32 static IPs. All for $300 a month (in US$). In some areas the service is better than that (in BC some people have got 4MBps).

However on the residential side some of things many providers (such as Sympatico) are moving to a PPPoE config. This has caused a lot of problems, as the supported clients are lousy. The reliability of the PPPoE clients is sorely lacking. The one provided by Sympatico, called Access Manager isn't supported on linux or NT/2000. There is however another client called EnterNet that will work with the Sympatico system. However, it costs $30 (US I believe). I strongly urge you to stay away from any DSL company using PPPoE. Go for one that uses straight DHCP instead!

  3. it's not as evil as it looks... on Microsoft's New Spamming Technique · · Score: 1

As much as I hate to say it...

First, the program does ASK you if it's ok to send messages to your contacts informing them of your address change. You actually have to press a button to get it to send the notifications. So is it really spam?

Spam is really unsolicited e-mail that provides no service whatsoever, and just bugs you. These messages actually inform you of one of your contact's new e-mail address. It's worthwile information.

Second, If they are providing this feature, why not let them include a little advertisement? People put up with the little ad at the bottom of every single hotmail message without complaining too much.

They have to make money somehow, since no one actually pays for their software :)

  5. talk about a double standard! on Internet Banking Security Hole · · Score: 4

Every time there is the smallest security breach in an online e-commerce related company, the news gets broadcast all over the place. However, rarely are news stories posted anywhere about more traditional financial institutions or retailers. Ok, so there have been a few credit cards exposed online. But, do you know how many fraud schemes there have been invoving physical cards, at places such as gas stations and restaurants? The amount of online fraud is so small compared to the size of traditional financial fraud. From someone who knows quite a bit about the banking industry I feel way safer about giving my credit card to amazon.com then I do to my local Gas Station!!

It's the same think that happens with airline crashes. They may make the news every time but you've got a way higher chance of being killed every time you get in your car!

Bottom line, when you are using a credit card online, yes you have to be careful, but believe me, you better be way more careful using it offline!

  6. wait a sec! on Red Hat 7.0 Coming On Monday · · Score: 3

Anybody ever seen windowsupdate.microsoft.com Sounds like a pretty similar service if you ask me. Except for this one little thing: Microsoft gives it away, and RedHat is going to make you pay for it.

This just can't be. I must be in the Twilight zone! Everything has gone backwards!

  7. games on Wine would be a step back on How Is Wine Doing These Days? · · Score: 4

While the idea of playing windows games on a linux box with Wine sounds like a good idea at first, when you really think about it there are some consequences.

    1. Having Wine fully handle games would just be one more reason for game developers to not bother putting out a Linux version of their games.

    2. I doubt that performance under Wine would be up to the levels of the game running under Windows. While the symbolic FU to MS may be fulfilling (as in "Ha, I'm running a DirectX game on Linux!"), frame rates that don't look like flash cards are even better!

The argument can be made that this goes for Business type applications (like Office) too. While their performance would be less degraded than that of a game, it's just another exaultation of the Win32 platform. It will encourage people who were thinking of making a linux version of their program to keep it all in Win32 and then just use Wine to port it over. Still a Win32 app! And however good Wine is, it will never be as good as Win32 on Win32. That's just a fact.
