If you install MacPython, you get IDLE for free. It works just like the standard command-line Python interpreter but gives you syntax coloring and other useful features.

If you want something that will let you create GUI's easily, then try SPE. It includes wxPython and works more like a typical IDE.

It's just the "nanny state" stepping in to do the job parents should be doing. Granted, judging by the quality of children I see nowadays, parents aren't doing a very good job. However, I don't step in to parent my neighbors kids unless there's child abuse. So why should the govt. be entitled to "parent"?

What they should legislate is that parents are responsible for their children, i.e. if a kid is caught breaking the law the parent should also be held accountable. Of course I also believe each person is responsible for his/her own actions, but parents should be held accountable for not parenting to society standards.

I'm sure if someone tried to pass a law requiring responsible parenting it would get screwed up. But at least a law that says, "If a parent buys a rated MA game/movie/music for his child, the parent will be charged w/ contributing to the delinquency of a minor." This would apply to that stupid grandmother that bought GTA:San Andreas for her 14 year old grandson and then wanted to sue everyone in sight when "Hot Coffee" came out.

IMO, OSX has the best installer. Once you get the .dmg disc image, you either drag the icon to you applications folder or just double-click it to install it, depending on the application. If it's the drag-and-drop style, it's easier to install than Windows.

Personally I don't like the way SuSE and other RPM style distros install programs. Too often do I run into dependency problems. Debian based distros like Libranet (my current favorite) usually don't have this problem, at least in my experience.

Don't forget the movie "The Abyss". My diving instructor said that the fluid used for the final dive sequence is a highly oxygenated pig's blood-based solution. It lets divers go to extreme depths without worrying about excessive gas buildup in the blood since the gases remain in solution.

The only reason it's not passed the experiemental stage is because when it's ejected from the lungs, there's no air pressure to keep the lungs in shape, resulting in the lung's air sacs sticking together or a lung collapsing. It's just like pouring water from a plastic bag: the surface tension of the water keeps the bag stuck together.

My wife just gave me this tidbit. She used to work at Target and a kid wanted to buy a rated "M" game. His mom was right there with him. My wife told the kid he couldn't buy the game because he wasn't old enough. The mom got pissed off because "the ratings don't mean anything"; apparently she felt that the kid should be able to buy anything he wanted.

My wife told the mother that if she wanted to buy the game for her son, then that was a different matter, but he couldn't buy the game. My wife essentially told the mother, "If you don't care enough about your son to know what he's buying, playing, and doing, that's not my concern. You're his mother and I can't stop you from buying this game. But I can stop him."

  11. Stupid American gvt. on Clinton To Take On Rockstar · · Score: 1

Regardless of whether it was in the game originally or not, why does it matter? Kids can get better sexual scenes and situations from TV. Look at Desperate Housewives or Sex in the City. Geez, even Family Guy is borderline. But I guess it's okay for kids to see an "adult situation" but if a nipple appears, the line has been crossed.

Apart from the fact that it's not in the base install version of the game, the fact that you have to d/l the patch and tweak the game means the person is completely conscious of his actions. It's not like it's popping in a porno movie. Apart from "cuz I can", why would someone want to see crummy, pixelated cyber-sex? Just look under dad's bed. :)

The better question the gvt. should be asking is why children have the game. I highly doubt it's because the game store sold it to the kid directly. I remember being reminded that Mortal Kombat was rated "M", so obviously the system can work. If parents can't be bothered to check the game's rating or monitor what their kids are doing, then maybe CPS should be called and take the kids away; I would say the parents are guilty of neglect.

Okay, I'll agree with you, but only in regards to high school and above. But what if a kid doesn't have a web-enabled computer or a dictionary installed? I still agree with some of the previous posts regarding learning the basics first. If a young student doesn't know how to find the info in a book, then what happens when a computer isn't available?

Yes, using a computer can be faster, but many times I've typed something into dictionary.com and it doesn't find anything because I'm not close to the spelling. With a book dictionary, at least I can browse through a section until I find the word I want; I don't have to keep trying different spellings each time. And it really sucks if it's a foreign word, like French or German.

And don't even bother with the so-called "grammar checkers". I only find them useful in identifying correctly spelled words that are not used correctly.

This is fine for people who only need to look up a word every so often, but it doesn't address the fact that many people don't know how to use a real dictionary (or thesarus or other such aid).

My daughter pisses me off when she practices homework. I've required her to write a one page report and she can barely manage a paragraph. I tell her to use a dictionary to make sure everything is correct, but every time I have to walk her through how to use a dictionary. She doesn't know how to use the pronunciation guide or how to phonetically spell a word to look it up. Granted, English is one of the most piss-poor languages to learn to spell, but it still bugs me.

Judging by the lack of spelling and grammar I see on the 'net, I greatly fear for the future of our country when the current generation takes over.

Sadly, I've found that I have more knowledge than our so-called IT guys who have several MS certs. (Yeah, I know the value of MS certs.) For example, I was having issues on a system w/ a program that wanted to make the HD a journaling FS. The IT tech who came to fix it had no idea what a journaling FS was or why we had it installed, so common-practice was to remove it from the system. I had just read the day before about journal systems and had to explain what the benefit is. Unfortunantly it didn't mean anything to him.
