    Actually, since they actually KEEP their stats, they are the most reliable information on drive failures. My rough experience is similar, about 5% failure rate across the fleet. Some drives, last long time, others not so much. Same drives.

    My take on this is that Backblaze has dispelled plenty of myths about drive lifespans. I don't really trust anecdotal evidence offered by geeks (including my own above!)

    It'll have to go to the Supreme Court for that verdict, though.

    I have no faith in either the (R) (Trump/Cruz/Rubio/Bush ..) or Obama to appoint someone that would rule in favor of privacy/security over government intrusion.

    Quite frankly, people who say there is a difference between the two parties, need to wake up and smell the coffee.

    The last bastion of liberty is the defiant citizen saying "no" to government overreach. However, when sufficient numbers of people become compliant to the whims of the ruling elite, tyranny is at hand.

    Regardless of the circumstances of the case, I admire Tim Cook's stance. My only hope is that he remains standing firm on those convictions.

    FYI slippery slope is a logical fallacy, not because it isn't true, but rather because it isn't always true (logical arguments require certainty). Slippery Slopes are a valid argument when dealing with progressive changes towards an end goal, in this case tyranny. The story of a a fog in a pot of water slowly heating up is a "slippery slope" argument.

    Knowing that Slippery Slopes are a valid argument, just not valid in logic proofs is important. We're not dealing with a logical proof here, therefore slippery slopes MAY be useful here. I would postulate that the camel's nose is in the tent (another slippery slope example)

    What needs to happen is for NASCAR to say that starting in 2020, all NASCAR races will use camless drives, with fuel injection and limited fuel supplies during the race. Stock car racing used to be about pushing new tech, proving it in race conditions and making cars better in the long run.

    When NASCAR implements it, the technology will improve radically, and it will get pushed into production vehicles sooner and with better results.

    I am wondering if there is a full analysis of cost / benefit with regard to emissions and efficiencies. I would love to see an the emissions per mile ratio added into the mix so we can see exactly what the lower emissions / lower mileage cars could do, if we cared less about emissions and cared more about mileage (fuel economy).

    We can still do that. In fact, Walmart still sells plenty of feature phones with T9 txting on them.

    But my phone is really a second computer. Sometimes, just sometimes, I think I could live on my phone, instead of my computer.

  8. Antilock brakes on cars are there not because government regulations (well, they are now) but because someone invented better brakes (Mercedes IIRC). They sold it as a feature. People bought Benz cars because of it.

    5 Star safety ratings aren't mandated by governments, but most cars today are safer because people won't buy a cheaper car that is only one star rating.

    I've seen the following safety warning on heated hair curler "do not use on eyelashes" , I am pretty sure that isn't a government regulation, but I'll be you'd support such stupid warning labels because people are stupid, and do stupid shit. Lawnmowers are dangerous, including the old push mower (non-engine type) i had as a kid. I mean my gawd man ... exposed spinning blades of death! And yet, I managed to get into adulthood with ten fingers and ten toes!

    Yes, we do need a nanny state because people are too stupid . Yup.

    You're not counting the cost of replacing all the wall warts in the house with the new ones that save you less than $1 / year per person on the US.

    SO, to get the less than $1 in savings, you have to buy the new EXPENSIVE Patented proprietary government approved version at unknown cost. That is before you get the savings. Unless you're expecting Bernie to tax the wealthy to get you free wall warts that is.

    I am not asserting that you do anything. And that includes supporting government regulations. I am suggesting that if YOU were concerned about such things, YOU should demand Manufacturers do something OR do something yourself, and stop demanding everyone do what YOU want everyone to do, but are too lazy to do YOURSELF.

    You see, there is a problem here, you want to legislate for everyone, that which you are unwilling to do for yourself. I have a problem with that on principle.

    I've known plenty of people who have had both, switched, and switched back. Both ways.

    People want what they want, and there is a choice. Apple or Android are both perfectly fine as consumer choices for everyday people. Some people prefer (gasp!) Apple, others prefer (gasp!) Android even after trying the other. I know, really hard to understand how anyone can like either, considering how awesome Windows Phone (or whatever it is called today) is!

    IMHO the biggest limitation to what a phone can do, is the user using it.

    For instance, one can send a text/email that is flirty, and decide (based on the recipient's response) whether to claim it was sincere or a joke.

    This is ego saving, not deciding after the fact. Sending a flirty text is intentional. Context is also key, you don't send a "flirty" text to an enemy (generally), unless you're using it to hurt them.

    And accidental flirtations are even more sincere than intentional ones ;-)

    Free enterprise doesn't lead to anything, except efficient uses of resources. Don't blame economic process for something that is political. Which is why Politics should stay out of economics. The problem is, people use the tools available to protect their interests.

    If you want to fix the problem, bigger government isn't the solution. The solution is to remove government from economics. And good luck with that. The best we can do is limit political interference by not voting for shills that would subvert free economy with government interference.

    Like subsidies that always do more harm than good.

    They are socialists. They are trying to break free enterprise, because the only way to destroy it, is to help it destroy itself.

    ObamaCare isn't socialism, it is designed to break the best healthcare system and replace it one that is "fair".If they wanted to fix the healthcare system, they could have done it by creating health savings accounts and market reforms like One Price for everyone, rather than "hey, you're uninsured your bill is 100,000 for your stay, while the insurance companies pay only 10,000"

    I have one question for you. How has voting 90% helped blacks get out of places like Chicago and Detroit?

    My point, if it is too subtle for you is that voting DNC in lockstep hasn't helped the very people the DNC claims as its untouchables. Though they keep trying to blame Republicans for everything done in the name of socialism and social justice.

    MY view is doing "nothing" as you say, would have been better than keeping them enslaved to the DNC party has. And having a Black President hasn't helped them in the slightest either.
