why are you doing FREE work for a proprietary company that has no obligation to you other than to possibly hide your name
How does this HARM anyone? In any particular case, it is because I gain some benefit from my efforts, either directly (result) or indirectly (learning). And this helping other people has no bearing on me at all.
No, He isn't against "closed source" he is against anything that might be able to make closed source, even if it is completely free AND free (BSD). This is why he opposes BSD licensed material, not because it is free and free, but because it MIGHT be used in closed source.
Be opposed to closed source all you want, but if if tool is free and free why would you oppose it?
so that all contribution to LLVM directly helps proprietary software as much as it helps us.'"
And that is a problem why? THIS is the problem I have with RMS, is that anything that helps OTHER people is considered "bad" even if it helps you, equally.
At some point, actively trying to NOT help others, even if it helps you, is counter Productive to your own cause. BSD license, doesn't harm ANYONE and is "more free" license, compared to GPL.
AND if the Gay community isn't fighting to have the Lesbian "father" (lack of better term) pay for the child, then they don't deserve to have marriage. Of course, that doesn't fit the narrative and it will never happen.
Where is the GLBT community on this? If they remain silent here, not fighting (protesting) against this injustice, then they are simply hypocrites, wanting the benefits but not the full responsibility for their "rights".
Yet, if you put those same satellites in orbit around a black hole, GR math will fail in similar manner. Newtonian Physics works at very macro scales, same with GR Physics works at Atomic Scales, but as you go subatomic, GR fails. Additionally, GR doesn't properly account for even gravity at super scales.
I use this example, do you believe Geocentric model is accurate? How about Heliocentric models?
The fact is, neither Geocentric, nor Heliocentric models are accurate, as there is Galactic and Universal Models that are even more accurate. Geocentric is accurate enough for many things, and we still use Newtonian Physics for many types of "back of napkin" calculations, because the accuracy is "good enough" for such things.
The problem the all of these discussions is "how accurate, is accurate enough?" Geocentric is good enough for nomads in the desert, and making fun of them because they don't know about Heliocentric is false superiority. AND if you make fun of Geocentric belief systems, you should be aware that Heliocentric is no less "wrong" than Geocentric is (wrong is wrong)
When I try and find a good book to read on Amazon there is such an enormous collection of stuff that finding a new book is a serious challenge.
Frozen by choice. I don't see why a decent size Library would be different, other than it would be harder to view ALL the choices as quickly.
The solution, quit being a douche and pick a book. IF you don't like it, don't pick anything like it in the future. If you use Amazon's ratings, they will get you more material you MIGHT like. Something a standard library completely fails at BTW.
And there are plenty of "free" books out there to read.
Please tell me, precisely, the decimal value of Pi.
3 3.1 3.14 3.142 3.1416 3.14159
Saying "Precisely" and "Pi" is error in numeric values. 3 is no more wrong to say than 3.14159 is. Precision is relative at that point. How accurate do you need to be? a table with a circumference of 18 feet has a radius of just under 3. Saying pi is 3, radius is 3 is reasonable for getting a tablecloth, or knowing how much skirting you need or whatever else your measuring.
On the other hand, we now know the complete value of Pi to enough digits that we can encircle the entire Universe and be accurate to the NANOSECOND. How accurate is enough?
Liberal and "progressive" are not as synonymous as much as the left-wingers would love to portray. I have less problems with Liberals as they tend to try to have rational (even if I disagree with them) reasons for their positions, but Progressives are usually the ones proclaiming one-offs and anecdotes as "the way things actually are". Therefore, they extrapolate their cause and attack people doing their job for being "evil", and filled with "hate" simply because they don't agree. There is no logic, and their entire point rests upon name calling anyone they disagree with labels such as "extremists" (see Cuomo's recent remarks).
Just be careful to know which kind of "liberal" you're talking to.
Very carefully and with more understanding of the causes of racial tension than you have displayed.
How are we to progress past "racial tensions" by hanging on to them? When is Content of Character going to matter more than color of skin, if we keep hanging on to everything wrong with judging people by the color of their skin, just as YOU have done here?
It's fairly clear you are from a privileged race and don't have much understanding of what it would be like to not be.
So, to put it a different way, a man cannot speak against rape because they have no idea what it is like to be raped. And simply, race isn't as big an issue except for the "historical" point of reference. Chinese and Irish were both held as slaves in the US along with Black People, so what is your excuse here? Chinese people experience bigots, but rise above bigotry, to the point where the bigots don't matter.
And you're right, I don't know what it is like to be prejudiced against, but I do know what it takes to overcome it. Bigots are bigots, and you can let them affect you, or you can ignore them and move on. IF enough people simply did this, the bigots would stop mattering. Again, it is not about color of skin, it is about character.
The way I see it, there are bigots. They exist. However if people of color only see bigotry, even when there is none (plenty of cases to be found) they are letting the bigots win. You want to fix it, create less Al Sharptons and more Ben Carsons. However, if you keep teaching black people the best (easiest) way out of the Ghettos and Hoods, is to be great at Basketball and Football, and not hard work and studying, you're just perpetuating the stereotype that keeps them down, and that is the REAL bigotry. And not demanding our Universities educate these "student athletes" isn't helping either. Many of these kids leave college with no marketable skill and not enough talent to make it pro. THAT is a real travesty.
I've heard similar stories, which is why I asked. I am adding this to my collection of anecdotes. The problem is, I can see what others can't (and you can attest) but because I am "white", I cannot speak to this topic. I hope you take this challenge, speak out against this self hatred with all your being.
Congratulations on your ability to ignore the naysayers.
All you have to do is listen to the haters calling Alan West an "Uncle Tom" to know that the problems with racism isn't limited to "white people". I mean, when all the successful people of color have their character assailed with racially charged terms like "Uncle Tom" unless they conform to the "ghetto culture" you know it is ingrained in the subculture. The failure is theirs to own, when they don't allow people to escape.
It required a LOT of motivation and dedication on my parents part.
THIS is the magic bullet that fixes things most of the time. I work in education, and we have both "rich schools" (that get less funding) and "poor schools" (which get more funding) in the same small community, and the results are always the same. It isn't about school funding, it is about parenting. Many lower educated people are lower income people, who don't value education, and this produces a cycle of poverty.
I'd bet, that the #1 indicator of poverty is not poverty, but values instilled by parents. I look at the recent video of a three year old boy being disrespectful and using vulgar language, raised by a 16 year old mother and a grandmother who is a convicted felon and I think, "there is no way this is going to be good for the kid". However, I've been trained not to mention any of this because people who don't know me will cry "racism" (now you know the race). How can we have a discussion on poverty when people who see the problems are called names because it doesn't fit the politically correct theory of the day?
Additionally, the meta data is abstracted away so that it is aggregated and categorized so that Google offers Contact 150,000 "slashdot user" for $4.95 (or whatever).
Unfortunately, you're uniqueness is identifiable given enough identifying points. I don't know how many people with a nom de plume themselves "Archangel" are out there, but I'm sure I'm pretty select group of people from that alone. Given that info and perhaps another three or four, you can get even more selective list and my name would be listed. I am not concerned about people identifying me, we are identifyable.
What I am concerned about is my actual email being leaked, though I am not sure who would find my email worth reading;)
No, firing incompetent people in charge of a massive project is the right thing to do. The problem is, this particular project was doomed to fail, because of the scope and every pissant congress critter and political hack that had to add their $.02 worth.
What is needed is "the duck", so that each idiot involved can have a say that doesn't really affect the end result.
The Monopoly of Microsoft was not destroyed by US or European governments punishing it, it was destroyed by Linux. The monopoly of Rome lasted several centuries. I'll take my chances with Microsoft than a tyranny that spans generations.
East India companies didn't do any such thing. One cannot restrict trade without the authorization of the state. In this case, the state was a monarchy (tyranny) that authorized such, and empowered the corporation to enforce its monopoly. It was not a natural monopoly.
If you want a better example, you should have gone for Standard Oil Monopoly.
But my counter to the breakup of Standard Oil is, the unintended consequences of that breakup includes the National Highway system (Interstates) instead of Railroads and trolly cars, and large megalopolis cities rather than smaller self-contained communities, and no "war for oil". And, it is entirely likely that we would have an alternative fuel system that didn't depend on ever increasing drilling in sensitive ecological zones.
The problem is, we'll never know because we didn't choose that path.
Actually, the MSO is the truest "title" for a vehicle, and doesn't require a state. It is the manufacturers statement that it is a vehicle it built and transferred to another. It doesn't require a state at all, any more than any other guarantee requires a state. The state is just a middle man for disputes and is supposed to be neutral towards both(all) parties in any dispute.
Private property existed before any "state" was ever formalized. I would postulate that the state was a necessary creation to establish justice between peoples in property disputes (among other reasons). From the very first too that was crafted, ownership is the result of work (effort). Caveman Ogg's axe was his, and didn't require a state for him to declare it so. It was a product of his own labor, and thus, no other had a right to "take" it. This is the origins of "natural rights" comes from. They exist, apart from the state. The piece of paper is formalized declaration of ownership, recognized by the state, nothing more.
In this case, you're substituting a declaration of a natural right (MSO) for an artificial creation of the state (certificate of title). One does not require the state, the other does. Guess which one you believe in more? FYI, an MSO is actually valid in every jurisdiction, but a Certificate of Title is only valid where it was issued, hopefully you understand the distinction there.
What is sad, is that you've been indoctrinated to be the a slave to the state, believing that all power and authority derives from the state, rather from the individual's rights to self determination.
