this is just the old convergence thing all over again. Will the Convergence thing be a computer or will it be a TV?

I think that it hasn't arrived yet, that this will be 'something' else. Something that will superset everything else.

Ultimately I think it will be an AI Star Trek type thingy with voice commands, able to do almost anything. I say this because I can recall a old couple many many years ago who came into the computer retail store I worked in, who wanted to see the first mac with a built in microphone and built in speech capability. Telling them that it was not star trek yet was exactly like taking a lollipop from a child. They were heart broken.

Point being, there is a major pent up demand in the culture for that kind of tool. It has been sold in the culture through multple shows and movies for decades now. This is what computers are supposed to be.

The first company that can legitimately say say "This IS Star Trek" will make a mint. I think everything else is sort of grasping baby steps towards this sort of thing.

heck, If you have ever seen the film of the introduction of the very first Mac will note what a visceral reaction was achieved with such a jump in technology, even if alot still had to be fulfilled and developed over the coming year. Just the idea that it could be achieved ...

Heck If Steve Jobs comes out with something that is a legit star trek level type system in the next few years, he can blow peoples mind all over again. But I digress. (And I do not own a Mac)

Of course, this is insanely difficult. but ....

  11. definitions of species on Evolution - Beyond the Popular Science · · Score: 4, Interesting
There has been a lack of clarity and precision in the definition of individual species. For example, in certain bears, and other wide ranging creatures, you get variations that lead some scientists to classify two different animals as different species, when in fact they could crossbreed with viable young.

As an example closer to home take a look at common dogs. I can bet that some biologist in the far future (say 100 million years from now) is going to find all of these dog fossils, especially in pet cemetaries, etc. and conclude that these were all different species of animal. A chihauhau vs a Saint Bernard? the same species? come on now.... ;-)

fortunately/unfortunately, there are a number of websites out there that have hints for things like the Microsoft interview riddles, etc. a number of which have featured on /. - etc

I would likely look at a number of practical skills tests focussed on key skills. For example, I might have a simple 5 to 10 page brochure website in straight html on a floppy. I might ask him to maintain the look, but convert to style sheets. Have them sit down at a PC without a net connection.

Or find out and fix something that is broken on a page or in a piece of sample code.

In other words, have tests for key tasks, nothing huge. You could even make it a timed test. Create a benchmark by having all current personnel also take the test, so you know what the bell curve is. The current crew could even help design it, supplying questions that people should be able to figure out in order to work there.
