If it did, then the GPL isn't an issue here at all, because they can claim that their right to distribute a derived work comes from their contract, not the GPL. That's what dual licensing is all about. Then again, IANAL.
The recipies seem a bit uneven in difficulty level, ranging from "Go to a restaurant" to complex instructions for Pad Thai. Also, the spelling level of the authors seems to be below par for Slashdot.
Inventing new recipies can be a very geeky thing to do, especially if you apply a bit of physics.
The most egregious omission in the collection is Grits & Spam.
Not only that, but whenever you close the book, it locks, and whenever you turn the key to open it, an advertisement pops up and you can't do anything else with the book for three minutes until the ad goes away.
also, when the copyright finally expires, it will still be illegal to break the access protection under the DMCA because other works may still use the same protection.
If free software is being taxed as a donation, then the donors (free software developers) can theoretically take a tax break based on the assessed value of their contribution times the number of users!
If this is true, then maybe the reason the Polish authorities are doing this is to get free software developers to move to Poland.
Your patent has been rejected because the (process/device/whatever) is described in full if you look at the ascii encoding of the sequence starting with the 456,776,567,345,664,335,...,687th digits of pi.
How's THAT for prior art? This pi thing is better than a roomful of monkeys.
Nanotechnology may allow any substance to be produced easily, and the Foresight Institute is collecting information on how to do this. Obviously, they are in blatant violation of this proposed law. Will they also try to shut down sites that teach basic organic chemistry?
Somebody needs to combat legislators who disregard the Constitution. Remember that the oath of office that Congresspeople and Senators swear is to uphold the Constitution, so any legislator trying to cut into our Constitutional rights can be accused of hypocrisy by their opponents.
I've got a better idea... Write a worm/virus, copyright it, and sue everyone that passes it around. Make Money Fast! The only thing you have to worry about is hordes of angry Windows users and their lawyers.
Oh, wait... the Napster/Metallica conspiracy has already done this...
Not every #9 Revolution IV card supports the flat panel interface. I understand that SGI has a boatload of #9 cards that do support them, however. Apparently SGI also has a trick or two up their sleeves to keep the flat panels alive.
I hate to say it, but Microsoft does have a point about its copyrighted material.
The best result that I can see coming from this is a gaping hole where Microsoft's copyrighted text used to be, followed by a careful paraphrase of the trade secrets in the excised document. A link to this should be prominently displayed for a year or two on Slashdot's home page. Fair use quotes and links should definitely not be touched, and neither should the various posts which explain how various archive programs can bypass the security.
Maybe we can argue that WinZip is in the same category as DeCSS - and force Microsoft to remove it and all links to it!
The distances supported by TCP/IP are pretty small compared to distances in space. You would be able to do TCP/IP as far away as a few times the moon's distance, but not much farther, even with a set of relay stations.
New protocols will be needed for greater distances. A set of protocols for an asteroid belt sized network would probably not work very well for an Oort cloud sized network, let alone an interstellar network.
Slashdot is amazing!
