Up at State College, PA (the home of Penn State University), there exists a quaint little arcade filled with all of the classics.
You mean Playland?
You got your Pac-Man, your Street Fighter II (the original), the Speed Racer racing game, you name it.
Do they still have that Asteroids machine back in the corner? When I saw that my jaw fell open; hadn't seen one of those machines in, oh, 10 years? 15 years? Great game, Asteroids. Mmmm, monochrome vector graphics.:)
Aside from that, hardly any pinball machines make money in todays world. Think about where the majority of p'ball machines end up, honky tonk pubs, and shit. Definitely not a money maker.
Well, maybe. Personally, I would rather play a game of pinball than the latest cookie-cutter 3D shooter/fighting game/racing game. No cheaters, no strategy guides, no power ups, just you against the laws of physics.:)
It's a movie based on a game, for Pete's sake. If you go in expecting a deep plot, then you are going to be disappointed.
I had no problem figuring out what was going on in the bungee scene, which I thought was pretty cool. And while the acting won't win any awards, it was better than the acting in Pearl Harbor.:-b
Oh, and Angelina Jolie (who may have *the* poutiest lips of any woman on the planet) played the character *perfectly*.
In short, I thought it was an entertaining film.:)

My vote for best Pratchett book has got to be... [trumpet fanfare] The Hogfather [aplause][please?]
No.:) I didn't like Hogfather (except for the bit with Death giving out stuff at the store), nor Fifth Elephant, nor Last Continent. In fact I was getting worried that Pterry was losing his touch. But he restored my faith with The Truth and Thief of Time, which I think are two of the better books in the series.
portability -- amazingly, not all Motifs are equal. If you want to write an app which can run on most versions of IRIX, HP-UX, Solaris, etc. you can only rely on quite a small part of Motif. This is an incredible and enormous pain.
Bah. We have a huge application which uses Motif; using just about every widget in the book plus a few that aren't, and it runs on Irix (5.3, 6.5), HP-UX (10.2, 11.0), and Linux (2.2, 2.4).
I am aware of one leak which is real, though. Try putting up a window full of XmLabels and update them every second. You will see your memory sleep through your fingers for no apparent reason.
You *did* remember to use XmStringFree to free up the label strings, right?:)
instead of using the 19" magnavox (still a current "good" monitor at the time) to my 486 laptop with a 640x480 display for editing. I could get *much* more done before my eyese swam to the poinht of illegibility.
I'm just the opposite. We have sone NEC flatpanels here, and they suck quite thoroughly. Fuzzy, only look good at one res, tend to have blurry vertical streaks, hard to read unless you are at just the right angle. I dunno, maybe it's just NEC. On the other hand, I have a 21" SGI CRT on my desk and it's perfect.:)
highest prison rate, highest murder rate, and a corrupt government
At least the people in our prisons have generally broken some law, rather than, for example, saying something nasty about Saddam Hussein. And 'corrupt government' is practically a tautology everywhere.
Financial success and stability in the U.S., or a lower crime rate, better health care
Better health care?

In stead we found between and an eighth and a half inch of dust.
No, that's just how far the astronauts/lander/whatever sank in, not how deep it is. If you go to the beach and you leave footprints a half-inch deep in the sand, that does not mean the sand is only a half-inch deep.:-b
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this part added in a much more recent edition of Gates' book? Even in 1995, Gates viewed the Internet and the World Wide Web as nonentities.
No, Gates always knew the Internet was going to be important, just as Oceania has always been at war with East Asia.;)
Which take a long time to complete, at least for me.
and WAY too much wood required to do anything. If I wanted to do the same task over and over and over again for hours on end...
Yeah, I think the wood requirements are too high, but you can do this:
Step 1: Teach creature to cast wood miracle
Step 2: Attach creature to village store with the compassion leash
And how do you become evil?
I dunno, my problem is becoming good; my hand looks all orange and veiny, with sharp fingernails.
I suppose you should check your facts as well... as far as I know the Bible puts no year figure on the time the universe was created.
Well, back in 16xx, I think it was, Archbishop Ussher added up all the " begat , who lived for years,..." and was able to announce that the Earth was created at the stroke of noon on Sunday, 21 Oct, 4004 BC. It's all rubbish of course.:)
What I find a disconcerting is that some folks use 4 spaces and I use a tab set at four spaces.
Well, there's your problem. Tabs are just evil; don't ever use tabs in your code.:) I have my tab key set to insert 4 space characters, if I ever really need a hard tab (like in a makefile), I hit ctrl-tab.
Does anyone know what Black and White would have been written in and what tools were used?
Some of it at least was written in C/C++. I know this because I found a bug where if you click on a workshop that is in your area of influence, but which you do not control, you get: "Percentage complete: %3.0f%%". Someone didn't do their sprintf correctly.:)
B&W has crashed exactly once on my system, probably because I had 15 other things running in the background, one of which was zMUD, which is flaky on days that end in 'y'. I've found a couple of small bugs, but it's been solid aside from that one crash.

No, you prefer to wallow in ignorance rather than striving toward knowledge.

All that means was that the C compiler sucked. :)

The Motif FAQ has an entry about this.

Yep, from Infocom. I had it for my Commodore. Great stuff.

Sigh. Man did not evolve from monkeys. Man (and monkeys) evolved from a common ancestor.
there is so much evidence for and against that
What's the evidence against?
Mmmm, I dunno. Read about chaos theory or quantum mechanics.
BTW - If we're here as a result of random processes,
Natural selection is not random.
PS - God loves you and longs for relationship with you.
How do you know? Did He call you? And anyway, if He wants a relationship with me, He should have my number.
You should give you diploma back, because you obviously didn't learn anything.
Just think about how widespread the teaching of Evolution is. Anyone with half a brain can difinatively disprove it, but it continues to be taught.
If you can "difinatively" disprove it, go ahead and write it up. I'm sure the Nobel Prize people would be interested.
The planet might be able to support 30 billion people, but I wouldn't want to live there.

I use Windows all the time, and I can't remember ever using the Windows key or the other one that looks like a menu.
I use window-r all the time.
What's wrong with ctrl-esc-r? I'd trade the Windows keys in a second for the alt keys in the right place and a wider spacebar.
Nah, it's great.
A whole 5 levels,

Um, it *did* work, just not as well as promised.
