  1. Teaching the children on Interview: Ask Steve Wozniak · · Score: 5

    Steve,
I remember seeing at one point that you run a day camp or what not to help children get accustomed to using computers and what not. (I can't find any references to that at this point).

    My question is this:
Do you feel that operating systems such as Linux/*BSD are a viable option for teaching those children who have no previous experience with a computer? Certainly the cost factor would be a great motivation for choosing these over other operating systems. It seems to me that it is more difficult to train those who are set in one GUI than those who have no previous experience whatsoever. I really have an intrest in this kind of community service and felt that someone like you with experience (and albeit alot more money ;>) could provide some insight and advice.

I'll agree with you on the coding part for Office. I had to do some integration with project and outlook and it was a breeze. Now on to the bad point.

It's this kind of scriptability that makes viruses like Melissa and whatnot possible. You have to weigh your choices very carefully. Do you want your browser to just be a browser or do you want the control given to websites by the browser that you see in IE? I don't WANT a web site to remove the use of the back button.
Do you want your word proccesor to be just that or do you want it to be so intertwined with your email client that someone can write malicious vbscript ,that was MEANT to be used in the word proccessor or spreadsheet app, that can clog your entire mailserver and plant a trojan on your PC?

I'll be the first to admit it's a dificult decision. What is that common ground between the minimalist and the bells/whistles people?

Luckily the area I live in here in Georgia has all of those things minus effecient public transportation.

Space: my apartment is right on the Chattahoochee river.

ADSL/cable: My complex can get both xDSL and cable modem. I currently run a 1.1MB sdsl line from covad.

Decent wages: hells yeah ;) My 1500 sq ft apartment is 840/month and I make more than enough to cover.

A decent name: Roswell. Waht's more geek than that? hehe

Innovation: Atlanta has been growing since the Olympics.

On the public transportation tip it's somewhat negative. MARTA runs all over the city fairly well but In the Metro Atlanta counties like Gwinnett, they refuse marta because they feel it will bring in "undesirables and crime" (read: we don't like them folk cause they's different). The other side is that Cobb county decided they could make money by running their OWN mass transit system and link up with MARTA at a single point. This of course sucks and does not work. When I was without a car for a year, I had a two hour commute to the other side of the city JUST because I had to transfer from CCT (Cobb County Transit) to MARTA. Of course now I'm cool if I have to use public transportation because the bus stops at the front of my complex and is about 10 minutes to the train station.

Myself, I was just happy that it was available for linux at all. Kudos to all involved in making this an option much less a reality. And yes I realize that the engine itself isn't going to be opened (just yet ;>).

This begs a deeper point. Notice that Brandon states:
    We don't
have any plans to release the engine proper (certainly not until
all our licensees games are finished)

I wonder if more companies will do something along these lines as id did. When a technology becomes aged in a certain sense, release the source to help further the game scene. Releasing source like this could foster an intrest in younger developers who might not have thought about development before. Didn't borland/inprise/nameofthemonth opensource an old IDE not to long ago?

I *personally* use linux as my desktop because I started with it before FreeBSD and feel much more comfortable with it. It wouldn't matter a rat's ass to me if I had to use a *BSD and couldn't use linux. You wanna know why? (I know you don't but I'm going to tell you anyway)...

Because I have the source to all the applications I run. For those I don't, FreeBSD supports linux binaries.

The records were done within 24 hours and I am a happy camper.

I found joker through a suggestion of a slashdot user. They're fast. They have an SSL encrypted process. (heLLO? network solutions?) Ignore the fact that they use poor english on the site (it IS their second language) and you'll be happy. The only issue pain was having to re-register my name servers and contact info with corenic since network solutions info isn't corenic registered but that was cool with me. When my other 5 domains expire next year, I'm rolling them over to joker.com. They're fast, simple and in short, they kick ass.
