Many people who were saying the DoJ should force microsoft to open the source code were not looking at the long term. We all realize the value of opensource but allowing the government to force a company to release its intellectual property like that sets a dangerous precedent. Forcing an opening of file format standards would be ok but not all the source. I have a feeling that the route to break them up would be the best thing for the consumer.
Breaking them up into an operating systems group and an applications group would be the best IMHO.
This of course would require a reevaluation in the future as the landscape of computing changes but for now it is the best solution. Fines don't mean jack shit to MS.
Rob, I think using the phrase "rip it" was probably a poor choice. My take on the whole DVD deal was that I just want to watch them under linux and not have to run a proprietary OS to do it. I don't want to have to buy 2 dvd players (one for the living room and one for the bedroom). Using phrases like "rip it" make you think of copyright violation via copying.
I think this flick is still in theaters and it's definatly worth a look. Kevin Spacey has to be one of my favorite actors in a long time. The movie was one of those that had me still sitting in the theater as the credits rolled because I had taken in so much. The Green Mile promises to be another movie in the same vein as American Beauty in that the movie leave's you in your seat at the end as you try to soak up the whole thing.
I agree that we need the contact information but that information is still available but not via the quick and easy whois as stated in the original post. I don't mind people contacting me about my domains with serious issues at all. I DO mind the fact that I need to beware of the Microsoft cookie recipe that will erase my harddrive if I don't send the message to a hundred people or that I might be interested in this fantastic offer on finding long lost pets fgor only 19.95;)
At least the email addresses aren't available now and I like that considering all the domains I host. I just recently made a ton of changes that stopped my contact email from being printed but this is hella better.
Actually that may have been a mistake on my part but this information is readilly available on the company website. I'm not approaching him in a negative light by any means. There would be no need for retribution.
I know all about the session-level cookies. I knew that it wouldn't be stored but I still found it entirely useless for viewing a single page. It is the comapnie's perogrative. The sad part is, the type of people who get concerned about cookies aren't the type of people they are interested in. heheh

I just attempted to load cometzone's web site and it doesn't allow you to unless you allow cookies. God I love junkbuster. The sad thing is I find this to be more and more of an issue. Why do they need to store a cookie for me to load the page? Admittedly they can do whatever they want with the website but I find this just plain stupid.
On a positive note, I recently went to Axent's site to do some research on their products and foudn that I couldn't view any product information unless I allowed cookies. I thought this was plain stupid and I emailed the webmaster regarding it. Below is the QUICK response from the webmaster at Axent. He was honest and shared more information than he needed to share ( he didn't even have to redspond ). I wish more companies had this attitude. My response back was that since I couldn't find a privacy statement, I wasn't planning on allowing the cookies because I wasn't sure of their purpose. He was a nice guy none the less. You will not receive any unsolicited information from us. Thanks for the heads-up on the feedback page. You are right, it shouldn't say "Submit Registration". As for the cookies, we have moved to a dynamic, data-driven site powered by Mainspan. I'm not 100% sure what the cookies are for (I'm real new at this job, still learning the site...no excuse, but a minor explanation for my lack of a real explanation) but I'm assuming that they are to allow the server to track (during the session only) your documents and allow faster access to the ones you access. It's a variable called "DocsActiveForUser". Again, I believe that this is what it is for. I will look into this further. I agree with you in the fact that for the public site, it shouldn't be cookies, but rather session variables. But I'm sure it's for the purpose of providing you the information you want faster...allowing you to kind-of 'keep track' of the documents you have accessed. I assure you its not for any tracking or informational gathering uses of ours.

Or search google for RSAAuthentication. You should come across a.gov mailing list that discusses a bit about it. There were too many URL's to list here.
