My bosses know that the wrok fo our section of IT (CNS, Communications and Network Services) coudl not be accomplished without students. Most of the other epeople in CNS are old guard Big Blue and VAX systems programmers. Students often have information about upcoming technlgies that the full-timers have nevr even thoguht of. I also serve as a liason beween the rest of the student body and CNS. When we put in a firewall over christam break and started traffic shaping due to 80% of your bandwidth being taken up by P2P apps (we limit, not block :) a lot fo kinks needed to be worked out. The full timers have no connection to the stdeunts as IT is a non-Academic department so they needed people with connections on both side to act as a bridge. It also gives me valuable expreince that is not avaiable elsewhere on campus. The Compter Science program (of which I am not a part) is a traditionaly comp sci/programming degree that has litle to do with the practicalities of netwokring or even dealing with desktop boxes. My job gives me practicle experience that will be (or so i belive and have been told) invaluable to finding an IT job upon graduation.

I also used to work retail and the cahs registers used OS/2 although i think it was 2.11. Financial institutions and places where they need total reliability still use it. No, it's not the consumer OS that IBM tried with 1.3 and then with Warp 3 (remember those cool ads in PC Magazine and the TV ads?) but for rock sodild reliability, a GUI that is still un parallelled you can't beat it. I still have and HPFS artition with warp 4 on it that i use on a regular basis but the hardware supposrt isn't there so that makes it tough. And the fact that IBM isn't changing the version number wth the release of the convience packs doesn't mean they aren't major upgrades. The warpcast ariticle stated that they would bring the Warp 5 server kernel over as well as some other very big changes. IBM may not be into the scrap-all-your-hardware-every-six-months-to-get-a- new-version-number game but i still think they do one HELL of a job with support, better then just about any other company i've dealt with.
