    My mind boggles that some other moronic sheep stumbled across your brain fart and called it insightful.
    Dictators and tyrants have used that line since the beginning..
    Yes we need roadblocks so we can search you for weapons

    We need to be able to search your house at will
    (if you have nothing to hide...)
    We need to take your children to an inquisitor
    (if you have nothing to hide...)
    We need to give you a cavity search, bend over.

    People like you are the weak link who would freely surrender our long fought for liberties away because of your need to be a lamb...
    BTW: One time pads are very very old and have always been considered the most secure crypto.. as long as the pad is long, random and not stolen.

    Good a $40,000 fine is a small price to pay for a Narc. I honestly think the appropriate penalty for that kind of scum should be far worse. I can remember when I was a kid a friend of mine from South Korea would tell me horror stories about the North and how kids were encouraged to narc anything and everything to their teachers.. nice to know we've caught up North Korea.

    Are you serious? The company has exactly as much control over you after you leave as they have over me or anyone else in the world; none. It amazes me that grown people who work in large corporations constantly bitch and grumble when they have to sign agreements regarding what they can and can no do when they leave. The best manager I ever had when I was a PFY overheard me griping about signing a non-competition agreement told me that company lawyers know they are meaningless and unenforceable.. they just hope people are stupid and sheepish enough to obey them. Obviously they can attempt litigation if what you are saying is untrue and they can prove damages but outside of that tell them to piss off.
    If I were you I would very seriously talk to a lawyer about suing them if they do speak to your current employer.. it has been done many times before.

    This guy kills me.. you always see him popping up in storys and making these insane claims.. I'm now adding his "linux security issues" re BIND.. days after their gigantic DNS fiasco to my "hello pot, this is the kettle, your black" list of dumbass statements. This was the same guy who said one of my favorite dumbass statements of all time:
    "Microsoft's existing peer-review and beta-testing processes give Microsoft better quality control than open source can provide."

    I wonder if the machine operators are expected to show up at the mine. I think I'll submit an application to see if I can sit at home in my underwear and mine for coal or uranium up north. Every once in a while I'll saunter into some badass blue-collar bar and let them know I'm a miner.

    Oh puleeeeezz, many who played D&D and watched Trek eventually got Laid and Paid - even if they didn't become engineers.
    The "us" types you mention where the boring old status quo - not pretty or rich enough to be at the top of the social food chain, not smart enough to do anything other than feel superior to the outcasts - and just be content they weren't tormented as much. The fact that anyone would try to differentiate geek and nerd is just a continuation of that pathetic system.
    Honestly, I think the threat of Columbine and Hordes of armed nerdkind might actually help temper the cruelty of the pinkboy school-jacket wearing goons who cause the problems in the first place.

    I honestly think that people who think we are destined to die are the ones whos focal distance ends at the tip of their nose. Living forever would be great because death sucks.     Not at all, living forever would be great. We should not be content to merely survive on earth. Population is only a limiting factor in a limited environment; it's time to live our destiny, go out and look for strange new worlds, boldly go where no man has gone before... It is utterly insane to expect to stay here on this little planet living our little life death cycle until the planet itself is wiped out or deprived of life. Life extension, space exploration, carpe universe! Don't be such a neophobe.

    Short term: the big greedhead corporation pays, not necessarily the consumer. Regardless I see your point but I don't know; I've seen big companies do moves as a form of constructive dismissal... reward the critical 20% as an incentive and let the replaceables re-enter as newer, cheaper, younger employees elsewhere. There are also usually huge incentives put up by wherever they plan on moving to.. especially given they're bringing 10,000 jobs to a local economy. Longterm it will still balance-out. Besides which if any of the companies you mention decide to up their price the market will level it out... TS to the company that sees a sales drop because they decide to pass those costs on when none of their competition is.

    I don't totally agree, not in the long term. Those companies will move the bulk of their production out of California, that's all. If Caifornia blames it's "19th century infrastructure" then so be it those companies will take their biz to a place with new infrastructure and lower the cost to the consumers.

    A Palm consumes as much E as a fridge.. give me a break.. I'd love to see their calcs on how much E went into a can of coke or a phonecall.. Oh well helps set the tone for the next four years.. we'll get lots more of those famous republican bizarro concepts, "Just say no", Star Wars, "thousand tiny points of light", etc.

    That's very cool; I'm amazed they understood enough about the importance of using something truly random to generate the 'noise' for the key records. Digitally, I wonder how much data can be stored on an LP (were they 78's, 33's, 45's - see the NSA still won't tell you everything). I wonder how they transported the key records... it's a whole Bond movie - the Mata Hari type seduction attempt to get the record from the young Signal core engineer on the PanAm flight. Menancing German agents sneaking into his hotel room to record the record.. Oh well, good post.

    That's strange my Pioneer DVD-V555 plays my CD-R's. Given that yours is a 606D I wonder if Pioneer has started doing the same thing. As for the original poster wondering why Sony would do such a thing.. it's because they are corporate Greedheads who would rather you pay them their inflated Greedhead price for CD's and don't want you rolling your own.
