Hrm, maybe I should go into marketing for Apple.

Nobody said a steady 3G connection was required for this sort of use, or that for every person using the app, they had to own the device.

Even an iPhone 4 is a ton more mobile than a phoroptor, and a lot less expensive, since phoroptors clock in around $5,000 and take a trained professional to use.

A sole traveling, untrained, non-optometrist Peace Corps kid with an iPhone 4 and a box of donated used glasses could make a big damn difference.

  4. Re:Just Return It on Apple, AT&T Sued Over iPhone 4 Antennas · · Score: 5, Insightful

It's not exactly about the phone. Yes, you CAN return the phone, but it's too late at that point - now you're in a 2-year AT&T contract, that you then have to pay $375 to get out of. All thanks to your phone, sold to you by Apple, not working as advertised.

So then you have a choice, do you eat the $199 or $299, and the cost to get a different phone, to hold up your contractual obligation? Or do you start lighting a fire under Apple's ass to fix the phone so you can get the phone and service you paid for? AT&T blames Apple, Apple blames the consumer, so the consumer is going to have to sue to get things righted.

Granted, if you needed to sit down and set up your whole config for one of your pairs of 6513Es on a touchscreen, it'd be pretty fail.

Pretty fail that one didn't config everything ahead of time in the test lab. But that failure isn't a failure to communicate; rather, a failure to prepare.

If you want to be really efficient, save the config to the backup directory on the network for access elsewhere, in case it's missing for some reason at deployment. And that's a copy-paste gig.

That was a terrible assumption. Three years in the Network Operations Center at Mayo Clinic Rochester, overseeing their network overnights. Clearly, 80,000 device networks aren't "real" enough for you. But hey, not everyone wants to head into the IT world and reboot mom-n-pop shop Linksys routers.

You're tied into the iPad, and thus you assume all tablets will be iPad clones. I understand your inability to think different, and offer you my condolences. Have at least SOME faith that not every new product will be a direct imitation of another.

  7. What about the Network Administration apps? on Cisco To Challenge iPad With Cius 'Business Tablet' · · Score: 5, Interesting

What if they load this sucker up with a special USB-to-RS232 for consoling, and a bunch of Cisco-made apps for plugging into CiscoWorks and other utilities network monitoring, remote management, VPN, and have it support similar 3G data networking?

If they toss one in with every order over $50k of network hardware, I think you'd be seeing these become standard Cisco enterprise management tools. All it has to do is interface with the other stuff Cisco sells, and it completely eliminates my need to haul a 15" laptop around for a console and network access.

  8. Quick chat with Seagate Tech Support: on Seagate Releases 3TB External Drive for $250 · · Score: 4, Informative

I chatted with Bryan W. with Seagate Support this morning.

My first thought was, hmm, did they do this sly and slip two 1.5TB drives in as raid 0? But, no, they didn't. It IS actually just one 3.5" 3TB SATA drive.

The distributed technical support documentation didn't have the cache or RPM, but the representative was leaning towards the RPM being 7200.

I even went so far as to ask about it working if removed from the enclosure. Since it meets SATA standards, he believed it would work without hindrance. The wording was "it's an internal drive in an enclosure."

So, very hopeful. My guess is we're seeing the External solution released first, and in the next coming weeks we'll see the internal version with more specs up here soon.

Of course they buried the reports. Sega didn't want the PR of "We make headsets that screw up kids' eyes lol"

What they DID do right, is never release the product. That was the first right thing to do. It would've been nice if some non-Sega-related entity were to release the reports, but that's secondary. It's by FAR a safe bet that no company today would ever do the same. The reports would still get buried, and non-disclosure agreements would be plastered on every researcher, but the product would be on every freakin' shelf from Wal-Mart to Best Buy.

Windows 7 adds a bunch of stuff that's really nice and convenient. It resolves some XP issues, and introduces it's own little quirks.

So the question really boils down to:

    - Do you really need it?
    - Do you have the budget for licenses and potential necessary new hardware?
    - Do you have the helpdesk staff available to train to answer user questions?

A Helpdesk can cut down quite a bit on OS migration training costs, at the expense of a greater Helpdesk initial call volume.

If you're considering overhauling your enterprise OS version because you want to "keep up with the Joneses," do yourself, your budget, your stockholders, your customers, and your users, all a favor, and wait. XP is still well supported, even if it's not the perceptual cream of the MSFT crop.
