THIS got a 2?!? Reads like flamebait to me. Now excuse me while I heat a cup of Java by the warming glow of your post...
Speaking as a typical (non-stupid) perl programmer, good design and code reuse are not the sole domain of Java, as much as Sun might like you to believe...Write Once, Run Anywhere, my ass!
In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the Perl community promotes code reuse (via the CPAN) more successfully than any other programming community I've ever seen. Why do you think writing CGI/DB scripts is so easy in perl? CGI.pm and DBI. Whenever I start a project, one of the first things I do is to visit the CPAN and see what is out there I can use to make my life easier. Most of the time I find modules that are of sufficient quality to make my job dead easy.
Now, if you want a good example of poor design, take a good long look at the Swing API...The most inconsistent bass-ackwards toolkit I've ever seen...And I LIKE Java.
Am I the only one who, upon reading the answer to the question, "What is my commitement if I become a member of FIN?", had a mental image of Brad Pit saying, "You determine your own level of involvement."
And that led to Billg in a dark room, looking out at the White House, taking a gun to himself to kill off his imaginary friend...
Don't you see what they're doing?!? They're trying to 'embrace' the entire.net TLD! Soon, simply having one will be grounds for a trademark lawsuit! And what happens when they introduce the commercial service,.com? Anarchy, I tell you! Anarchy! And ol' Billy Gates will be sitting there as the licensing cheques flow in, applauding himself on his 'inovation', and we the people will be subjugated under the oppresive arm of the MS-DOJ....RMS, ESR, Linus, Allan and Steve Jobs will be hunted criminals. Dogs and cats living together! Mere mention of Linux, Apple, Netscape, or AOL will be punishable by death! This is the end of civilization as we know it, people! Put your slavery hats on, we're going for a ride!
Incidentally, for the humor impared, this has merely been a product of a coffee-deprived mind. Any relation to any conspiracy, living or dead is merely conicidental!;)
Sigh...Qwest can't stop a true, dedicated hacker (defined in the classic, non-media frezy, clever person type way)...a TRUE hacker would find the line, cut it just before the transmit, attach his own gear and stream down the latest release of "Debbie does Dallas" to the expectant viewers...Now, THAT would be some hack! Just think of the wicked publicity! Of course, I'm not condoning willfull destruction of Qwest property, but damn would I laugh my ass off...
Let's just for the sake of argument consider it not as a 'conclusion' but more as a 'working theory'...Up until Melissa, the 'working theory' was that you couldn't get a virus by opening an email...now, as we all know, it's a whole new ballgame.
So, for the time being, until I'm proven wrong, I'll shake my head and say "I'm glad I run Linux" when I hear about the VBS worm du jour...
Speaking from a lay-physics point of view, it's like the THEORY of Relativity...not the LAW of Relativity...It works, but nobody has proven yet that it will ALWAYS work...
that I have recently been awarded the patent for a process which I have invented, known as 'breathing'. Any and all organisms who wish to 'breathe' may license the technology from me for a modest licensing fee...only $100 per 'breath'. Those who do not 'breathe' will 'suffocate' and 'die' (patent pending on the technological process known as 'death') Anyone found to be 'breathing' without a license will be punished to the full extent of the law.
Now THERE is an idea....filter those posts out of any request coming from a Microsoft IP address...C'mon, Rob! I'm sure you could have that coded up and tested in 15-20 minutes! They can't complain about what they can't see...
If you really want to be safe, filter all the clients connecting with IE....Because, as Microsoft loves to say (almost as often as "we innovate"), "We eat our own dog food!" (BTW, am I the only one who finds it somewhat disturbing that they refer to their own products as 'dog food'?)
I've never heard supporters of other products doing the "na, na, na, we didn't have the problem cause we use Solaris/Irix/Dynix/etc".
You've obviously not been hanging out on the right web sites then...Go find a pro-Solaris/Irix/Dynix website/newsgroup/mailing list and you'll get your fix.
Frankly, it amazes me that you got moderated UP to 3, Interesting...I personally find nothing interesting about yet another rant about how Slashdot is pro-Linux / anti-Microsoft. Welcome to the free world...if it offends you that much, then no one is forcing you to stay and read it!
OHMYGAWD!!! You mean to say there is PIRATED music available on Napster?!?! Say it ain't so, Ma, say it ain't so!
Seriously, I see Napster as being more like a radio station than a 'free music emporium and pirate haven'...With napster, instead of being force fed the music that the studios want me to hear, I listen to what I want, and if I like it, I go buy the CD. It works wonderfully. This way, I don't have to listen to cheesy DJs or stupid commercials...And I'm buying almost twice as many CDs...
I realize I may be the exception to the rule, but I think Metallica should quit getting their panties in a knot over Napster, go smoke some serious crack, and release a double live album.;)

Damn, I have WAY too vivid an imagination...

Gillette. The best a rat can get! ;)
Uh oh...I think that was a trademark...OH GAWD! PLEASE DON'T SUE ME!!!
I'll be good!
I think the terms are readily interchangeable... ;) On the same track, try reading it as: Mephisto := Microsoft Baal := AOL
At the risk of being called a karma whore, isn't that what /. is?!? ;)

But Ken, is she optical? ;)
Thank you for your cooperation.
Or 2001...Anyone got a spare monolith lying around? We could really freak the hell out of some astronomers!
Relax, sit back, take a deep breath, and find something silly to laugh about. It will do you good. =)

I still use my Hotmail account...as a Spam Trap. I log in once every 6 months or so to delete everything. Works like a charm!
Ah. I feel MUCH better now! Now I have to go delete some email before I lose my cookies! <grin>
