What Apple is really saying.. any book purchased through the Kindle app is subject to the same 30% cut [for Apple] that app developers have to give Apple. If you buy a $9 book in the Kindle app, $3ish goes to Apple. This is way less about expanding the iPad/Kindle catalog and more about Apple thinking they deserve a piece.
The big problem with this.. Apple gets their 30% cut from apps because they handle the store, transaction and delivery/updating/maintenance for iOS apps. Kindle purchases don't rely on or require Apple infrastructure, the app is mainly a means to a purchasing end. This is a 'I'm going to take my ball and go home' Apple money grab. What's to stop Microsoft from demanding 30% of any Kindle for PC purchase?
I like Apple, but these kinds of capitalist 'let's invent more ways to make money' motives really rile me.
and more about a lack of respect for any sort of intellect. At least here in the US.
Turn on Fox News.. at least once during every host's shift you'll see a casting of all things liberal and intellectual as evil and bad for america. 'My politics are right. Yours just aren't wrong, they're evil.' (Jon Stewart comment iirc)
It's an inferiority complex. Dumb people are just smart enough to know they are dumber than intellectuals. And like every insecure bully ever, they lash out.
Well of course.. having a foundation, actively pursuing objectives unattainable (generally social or cooperative) or conflicting with a capitalist/profit-driven corporation is about as liberal as you can get.
Being liberal doesn't mean the message being delivered is any less valid. Being liberal just means you're more likely to hear it in the first place.
It doesn't matter whether you were going to buy it or not.
If you buy a copy of Avast, you've gained the ability to use the software and you've granted a sale to Avast. If you pirate a copy of Avast, you've gained the ability to use the software and you've denied a sale to Avast.
Once you use the software your intent is no longer a factor.
Not exactly the answer you're looking for, but I've done guitar tracking in Samplitude 11 Producer running under Parallels 6 running on 10.6.4 (so a DAW inside a windows VM under OSX). Running around 6-8ms roundtrip, which is definitely decent. Reaper might be a little lower but I haven't tried it.

A monopoly is determined by size. Apple isn't a monopoly, it's just exclusive.
Having 8gb and assuming all of my hardware is compatible ootb with the 64bit live cd, is there any reason why I don't want to use the 64bit release as my main install? Generally see a lot of comments that 64bit isn't ready for primetime and to stick with 32.
I'll give a big Fuck You to my former credit union (Educational Systems Employees FCU in DC/MD - http://www.esfcu.org/). I was a member for over 20 years (going back to childhood - my first savings account) but was just given the boot last month after not enrolling in the government re-regulated courtesy pay program.
My parents - members for over 35 years iirc (both teachers for whom the whole CU was built to serve) - also got notices of intent to boot for not enrolling in the courtesy pay program. I've long been dissatisfied with the CU service so I accepted the account closure, but while I have other accounts in other institutions, my parents bank solely with ESE so they ended up raising holy hell to contest the policy.
Big corp, big banking, none of them need to care about us anymore.. and why should they? Just wait us out.. we all die sooner or later while industry keeps on chugging along.
If you don't already have a Mac, iOS requires Apple hardware for development. You also need to learn objective-C which doesn't get much play outside of a Mac environment. None of that is bad, just a hurdle.
Personally, while iOS is currently ahead of Android (user base, # of devs, apps, etc) I think before long it's going to start playing catch up to Android. Android has got a lot of momentum.
I'm getting so fucking tired of companies creating ways to further nickel and dime.
There's no chance this coupon is going to bring down the price of a computer by $50 to correspond to the loss of features, this is just another way to make some coin after the fact.
Everyone says this, but does this actually ever happen? No way.
Any Walmart Supercenter you go to, especially in places where the locals couldn't compete and had to shut down, prices at Walmart are the exact same price you'd find anywhere else. Which are cheaper than just about everywhere else (usually by a few nickels and dimes).
My father just bought a little fishing/hunting lodge type vacation place up in Northwest PA (he is neither a hunter or a fisher, just a bit white trash - no offense to anyone in Meadville/Conneaut). The Walmart Supercenter swallowed almost every other local business - including grocers - yet you can still buy a 3lb bag of organic apples, a 2 liter generic Mountain Dew, a Totinos Pizza and a quart of motor oil for less than $5. Which is exactly what it would cost you at any other Walmart in the US. Which was way cheaper than the places Walmart pushed out of business.
If anything, the places that couldn't compete where the ones milking their local monopoly.
Because Walmart has always known what the [American] consumer wanted. If it didn't, it wouldn't be the force that it is.
People want cheaper cost with minimum fuss. That's what Walmart does.. cheap, minimum fuss. For most consumers, everything else is almost always a secondary consideration to price. We put up with the dingy environment, we put up with the slackjawed nametags roaming the store because it ultimately keeps more $$ in our pocket.

It isn't old school linux unless the first 5 letters are Yggdr....
So someone could have gone to prison for how they treated you, but you're ok with it? ...

Back to the topic.. not excited about the direction Apple is headed with a Mac desktop.
Parallels 6 is fantastic for games. No earlier version is comparable, nor is Fusion 3.1.1 / Virtualbox.
Every game I've tried playing on it works perfectly (inc. Crysis, DeadSpace, GTA4, Fallout3, Bioshock1/2, etc etc).
