Scares the shit out of me. Government may not always work, but it most of the time has the good intentions of its citizenry (at least here in the US).

People who think socialism is a bad thing really don't grasp how bad capitalism can get. Financial and societal systems derived from legitimizing one of human natures worst aspects (avarice)? Sounds like a winner to me.

Funny.. I'd have thought the exact opposite. Mildly slower reading would enable better comprehension and internalizing of what you just read. I know that's the case for me.

The faster I read, the more my want to eyes skip ahead. I have to focus myself if I want to remember anything about what I just read other than the gist of it. I've switched to reading the words rather than processing them.

I'm assuming the difference is marginal - a few wpm rather than half speed, etc.

"What won't be there? The Offspring and Bad Religion. SEGA couldn't pull off the licensing, so it replaced the classic "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!" of the Offspring's "All I Want" with a random smattering of punk bands. It's a crushing disappointment for sure (more so than the loss of the Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut licenses) and may be a deal-breaker for some. Crazy Taxi and the Offspring go together like Sex and the City. You could always turn down the music and put an Offspring album on your MP3 player of choice.

Despite the loss of its classic soundtrack, Crazy Taxi is still a lot of fun. I don't know that newer gamers will appreciate Crazy Taxi, but Dreamcast fans will want to at least give this a look. It brought back a lot of great memories for me. Now I need Chu Chu Rocket and life will be perfect."

ridiculous exercise in misleading semantics is this article? Seriously?

    From their example..
A 20mpg car takes 5 gallons of gas to go 100 miles. A 50mpg car takes 2 gallons of gas to cover the same distance. I understand the mathematical misdirect they are trying to make, but it seems like a 'feel good' rationalization for low mpg vehicles - "hey, it's not so bad.. it's 50% better mileage than your old clunker". But who really asks a question like 'Which saves more gasoline, going from 10 to 20 mpg, or going from 33 to 50 mpg?' when you're focused on bottom line mpg. It's dealer-speak for the small-minded.

At the end of the day, a 50mpg car used 8 gallons of gas less than a 10mpg car to travel 100 miles. Everything else is usedcarsalesmanspeak.

    Ad revenue ploy.. good times.

'hawking is a great man indeed, but his vision is narrow in this regard, because he apparently assumes any intelligent life in universe has to follow the same path for social evolution.'

Not at all.. what he's saying is to not make any assumptions whatsoever. He's illustrating his point by giving examples completely outside the bounds of how we would operate or expect others to.

Theft is when there isn't a 1:1 corresponding transaction where a financial (or similar) exchange is required.

  14. Re:older developers... on Why Linux Is Not Attracting Young Developers · · Score: 1

Not really. Giving things away for free only works if there's a solid foundation to build upon or enables you to accomplish with. We all love to hate MS, but the truth is their software works and (starting with the NT4/Win2k days - which coincides with the MS Software Alliance Initiative) works reliably. OS/2 Warp 4 was given away on college campuses but never caught on because it really didn't do anything useful. I still have my orange and white boxed copy simply for nostalgia's sake. The same argument can be made with Linux for most average desktop users.

I really think is has much more to do with hardware capability now vs. what we used to have to work with. Remember mode 13h? Remember having to deal with Dos4GW and protected mode? The old ways of having to exploit the hardware - because it was the limiting factor - just don't exist now. Back in the day, the hardware couldn't keep up with programmers, so everything had to be exploited and hacked and worked around - all of which required very low level hardware knowledge.

We're in a world now where technology has pulled a complete 180. Hardware now enables programmers to do anything they want - ultimately making the limiting factor now the programmer. High level languages allow more to be done faster and with more focus.

I'm onboard with the bans on public smoking/second hand smoke. SH smoke can't be controlled, it can't be avoided and is largely forced on to other people. While I doubt smokers intend it, forcing SH smoke is really a selfish act that is detrimental to society at large. It's forcing others to accept your choice.

But if you want to smoke, full speed ahead! You do want you want with my blessing.

This thinking on banning electronic cigarrettes seems to be similar to a lot of the logic that goes on in pushing for more outlawing of thought crime. Nothing's taking place that is harming anyone whatsoever (even the smoker) but someone somewhere deems it wrong or immoral or whatever. We should have the right to kill ourselves in anyway we desire so long as there is no direct or indirect (to a couple of levels) harm to other people.

Going on a rant.. but I really hate our backwards false-puritanical society. Religion, god, faith, allah, $other_diety$.. it's all a crock of mind-control horseshit.
