Am I a snob? Yep. Why? I use Linux because it's not Windows. If Linux takes over the desktop world, I'll go use AROS in production. I mean it, forgot ODF. IFF for everything!!!!
As for stupid questions... It's ridiculous. Every newsgroup/mailing list/forum/etc. of every piece of open source software is full of idiots asking obvious questions. And you just know they haven't read the manual, because the answer is usually on the first page. And if they have a problem? Take a stack trace, investigate the code, find the problem is due to local mis-configuration? No. They go and post a "It doesn't work. Please help now. Sory my englsih is bad. Boss will kill if I can not make work now."
Anyway, in fairness this is software for free. Don't expect anything. It's different if you paid for a piece of crap and some support drone dises you, you have the right to shout at, demean and belittle the drone. As for open source programmers: you have no claims over them and never will. And guess what? They don't have to be nice to you. You know why? Because they don't need you. If they did, they would provide professional "chargeable" support and make you pay for complements.
By the way, I've used Linux for around 10 years and never asked a question from anybody. Usually cause some other idiot already asked it. Thanks you guys!;o)
This year I wanna hear: "Hey slashdotters, I'm a low paid inexperienced geek working in a super huge investment bank thingy and my IT director is obsessed with open source applications as a way to cut costs. Yet I've estimated that the constant upgrades, lack of support and general misconceptions could actually drive costs through the roof, not to mention the effects on my project risk matrix. So dudes, how do I convince this open source zealot that proprietary is the only way to go?"
C'mon people, how many times does this question need to be answered? Why not devote an entire section of Slashdot. What about Conversion: bringing open source to the masses. Learn the skills you'll need to convince everyone that community is more important that individuality. Today's top stories: Profit is evil!
I know this is off topic, but I remember seeing an Amiga boot prompt (the one with the hand holding the disk) for several days on a public/marketing station in Ireland. This was pretty cool at the time, cause the Amiga was cool. Windoze is pretty lame so seeing it on you TV is a pretty lame also.
This goes against what I believed was the reason for gcc in the first place: choice. This is a standard Micro$oft strategy, keeping developers locked by limiting choice. Even despite SCO's evilness, why punish developers/users who are innocent?
It also kinda plays into SCO's hands, i.e. if they were smart enough they could market their own compiler with plenty of "useful", platform specfic features... But I suppose they'd have to prove their OS worth first.
What's next no support for Windoze, because MS believe Open Source is un-American?
Not sure why no one mentioned this yet, but the principals of ACIDity have nothing to do with how the database is stored (disk or ram). It governs the use of multiple transactions to ensure database consistency before and after committing transactions. Having the database in ram just means you also need separate space to record the transaction prior to commital. Without ACIDity, each operation in a transaction is committed before ensuring the entire transaction is correct/complete, which may cause locking, etc.
Therefore, weather in ram or on a disk, the DBMS should work the same.
I've have been using QT for the earlier stages of my Master's Degree project. This article got me thinking about the licence, which suggests I must make the source available with any binary distribution.
This maybe problematic seeing how the copyright would be shared with the college. I think I'll give wxWindows a try since it has no such requirement.
Why is it so obscure? The Irish Times is a brilliant newspaper.
The real reason Paramount introduced Crusher...

Is it true Paramount originally wanted to cast a troubled hard ass teen (a la Fame) to connect to a more diverse male teen audience, but instead felt that TNG had become too popular and wanted to antagonise existing fans by casting such a rampant homosexual as yourself? Perhaps you can shed some light as to why such action was felt appropriate.
As to the future of your career in feature films, Jebus have mercy on our souls!
Most people look back and wonder where it all went wrong. I can tell you that Crusher fucked a lot of people up.
No this is not a flame. To rate me down is to deny me my freedom of speech (or type... or whatever!).
Point taken. I have friends who experienced the teacher-parent relationship first hand. I hated all my teachers at school, and I pity their kids.
If she did develop it by herself, I would have thought her father would be proud enough to allow her to profit from it. "Profit" doesn't necessarily relate to money or material goods.
What nonsense. Ireland's as materialistic as any other country, except we seem obsessed with land possession, 4x4 jeeps and how many pints one can drink before falling over. I'm not saying I agree with this change in culture (I hate people driving bigger cars than me!), but at least I've got my eyes open. MOST people I know think that having material wealth makes one more worthy of admiration. Romantic Ireland's dead and gone...
"Her father's just saving her from Evil Consumerist Brainwashing"So why'd he let her do the TV advertisement for a newspaper? TV is the tool of choice for any budding Evil Consumerist Brainwasher.;0) I think he didn't want the attention as people would find out that he was the one who developed the encryption method (he is a maths teacher after all).
Who says they're not doing it now? Anybody seen IE source code? We already know that all your favorites contact MS web site before sending you to your favorite site.
Anyway you always have a choice and I don't trust "disabled" features, so just don't use IE 6 or XP. There is always choice, but I fear future "bad practices" like past ones become so difficult/annoying to avoid that one just accepts them as part and parcel of the Internet. Web "bugs" anyone?
I wasn't refering to AOL Mail client, rather it's email infrasructure (mail servers, etc.). Personal short email aside, in business you need to be sure your mail will be delivered fast and securely. Will AOL give priority to Warner email going through it's network?
I find these cards are very wasteful, alot of paper + wrapping, and yes I do care about the planet. Software handled disposible CC numbers isn't nearly as wasteful.
There is truth in this, but the employer has a narrow view of what a web experience is. I've been to some dreadful sites with lovely flash animations/interactions that looked very "flash" and expensive but did not add anything to the site ot make it stand out from the rest... Using standards "should" (I know browser manus have much to answer for) add value because more people can view it using different platforms/devices. To me a great site provides info I need using my workstation and a subset of that info on my mobile phone.
This is a web designers choice, i.e. he/she may or may not use plugins. Most non x86 devices don't support newer web standards anyway, so it is still a must for some designers to create different versions of a web site no matter how undesriable. The fact that plugins are not supported is irrelevant as there are still bigger issues to be addressed....
What's more interesting than Intel conceding defaeat is this is the first time I've heard of a dual processor only "workstation" market. This must be a U.S. only thing or the wools been over my eyes for way to long. Time to get on to the boss about a dual processor workstation before INTEL has its way, althought I'm sure it'll be in their best interest to be selling twice as many CPUs...

Not another open source propaganda fest. *yawn*
Open source is so '03 man.

I'm just foolin', y'all. Those were just jokes! You know I love you Slashdot.

Glad I didn't throw out my C64!
If only Worldcom had taken control of the situation. Stupid Irish Telecoms regulator, what were they thinking.
:oP

I'm sure this was some stupid management descision. They'll soon see that AOL Mail couldn't possibly support employees doing "real" work.
