Yeah, I hear you and agree.
A business should have no say in how non.com domains are used, IMHO. And this does not preclude nasty fights in the.org domain, several Baptist church splits come to mind. Hey, here in the US we have the best legal system money can buy! I think there could be a several good solutions if any creativity was allowed:
-no one can have both a domian name and the 'sucks' version of it. Hey, if somebody thinks that your product/service sucks so bad it deserves a website of that name, well it probably does:-)
-the same name cannot be registered as both.org and.com to the same entity.
-there can be no limit or censorship of anything id the.xxx domain, but anything NOT in the.xxx could get you into the legal mess with local community standards. That way if a business or school or parent wants to block porn they can simply block.xxx; perhaps there could be a.med for legitimate medical sites (although I think that.edu fills this function)for kids and others who might want sex ed info, or such.
.com is for business. Doesn't make sense to my why anyone is bitching about not being able to use a business domain for a personal page. If it's a business to business dispute then it's different, but why should I get reynolds.com for my personal home page, even if I registered it before Reynolds aluminum or tobbaco? I still believe that we need.XXX for porn and a similar extension for personal pages, not everyone needs a.com; just like Zoning: there are places for business, for homes, for Adult Book Stores, for Daycare facilities and for schools.
A friend at my old gym (Andrew Halsey) did this. Wanted to point out what an epileptic could do. Of course somebody asked what should happen if had a seizure; his reply (thick Brit Accent)well then I'd make some bloody good time then.." I remember his GPS was a unit aout the size of a briefcase.
IMHO- all research is good. Those who would oppose ANY advancement of knowldege are not fit for anything other than clearing out minefields. I want Cloning, I want MASSIVE stem cell research, I want the Star Wars budget spent of FTL.
It ain't a life until it can survive outside of the mother, period. Neophobes do not qualify as Homo Sapiens in my book. We should treat any who would stand in the way of the slightest possibility of a single scientific discovery with the same fury and terror as those religionists showed against alleged witches and heretics.
my rant for the day...
Because-
I *AND ONLY FUCKING I* should decide what does or does not get installed on my computer. I DO NOT give a shit about what you *OR* Mickyshaft think will or will not work. Not that I intend to use Xcess Profits anyway, but, still, fuck them, and anybody who would ever say to me or anyone "No, you shouldn't have that". I shall install, upgrade or uninstall any damn thing I want to on my computer. If it dosen't work then I'll fucking troubleshoot it myself; fuck Redmond and their FUDsters.
I'm borrowing my husband's name and email (forgive me!)
A few years ago, I had RSI injuries which may or may not have been carpal tunnel. I had pain in the center of bottom of my palms and had tendonitis near my elbow, where you feel tendons move when you move your fingers. I do a lot of data entry. It was definitely painful! There were days I couldn't even turn the page of a magazine, it hurt so bad!
What caused this? Stress. I had a horrible supervisor and the stress manifested itself in my hands and forearms. Gee, when that supervisor left, I slowly got better. Now, the pain is sometimes there, usually when I'm under stress again. Caused by hysteria? Maybe it was caused by *my* hysteria when under stress.
Carpal tunnel is not new. My aunt was a typist for years and had to have carpal tunnel surgery in 1980.
And as for chemical sensitivity being the latest "fad" illness, well, my sister-in-law has had it since the early 1970's. She almost died from it a couple of times. So, no, chemical sensitivity has probably always been there. Doctors just didn't know what was really wrong and people were mis-diagnosed as having other illnesses.
I don't know if I consider myself truly a conservative, but yes, PBS does seem to be inherently biased against 1) any profitmaking entity 2) any American corporation 3)any 'non-PC' expression of morality, ethics or cultural values.
That does not stop me from listening, but it does mildly annoy me that my tax money can be used to support the propagation of beliefs I do not agree with; oh well, show me someone who agrees with everything our gov't does and I'll show you somone pretty fucked up in the head.
Old quote from Dobrinyin (USSR representative to US for 20+ years)
"The easiset way to deliver a nuclear explosive to a major city in the United States would be to smuggle it inside of a bale of marijuana".
Maybe make some easily removed masks of various wanted criminals. Walk past the cameras nice and slow. Discard mask. Repeat. Give the good officers a serious hard on to think that 8 of the 10 most wanted were in there...somewhere....
I try to see how loud I can get them to talk:
"I'm sorry, I can't hear you...Speak up please...what was that..."I can usually get them fairly SCREAMING. Then cooly say "there's no need to yell"
Because there is no such thing as "obscene". If some asshole is offended by something then GO THE FUCK AWAY!. Yeah, there's shit that I don't want to view, guess what, I DON'T!
I will post, or view whatever the fuck I want to; and strongly encourage the use of any means necessary against anyone who would take a site down for any reason. I dream of being able to mirror everything that anyone would want supressed, from pr0n to the root password on the NSA server(s). Information, or data cannot be "bad" or "good"- only accurate ir inaccurate.
No evidence of lead being good for engines. 'Leaded gas' was a creation of the oil comapnies, so that they could patent gasoline, which was otherwise a common, easy to refine product. Note that engines last longer now that they are using unleaded gas.

And it IS harmful as hell, FACT.
What a load of crap. Just giving people food solves the problem for exactly as long as the food lasts. Just teaching people to produce food allows the population to increase until the food production mechanism no longer keeps pace with the population, again with ghastly results. Much as with welfare here, there is no solution except for creating the vision, infrastructure and methodology for the people to PRODUCE something that the rest of the 'world' will PAY FOR. If you (and "you" can mean an individual, a demographic stratum or most of the population of a nation) do not create VALUE for others then you will never be anything than a charity case.
I'm a bassplayer. no one picks on guitarists when they do stuff like that because we're too busy laughing at 'em; as if they were fooling ANYBODY. Everyone knows you have to actually relable the '11' on there (or '12' in the case of my SVT)
Well, I disagree.
I am paid to perform a function. Some days that takes me 16 hours, some days 3. If I want to surf or DL porn fsck anyone who dosen't like it as long as *I* take great care of our clients who need service, when the need it. All the company has a right to expect out of me is the performance of my job. If they want to motivate me then stay the hell out of my emails, web log etc; I can go to a competitor or into biz for myself and they know it. Companies talk about "intrapenuership", hey part of that is getting the sysadmin/MIS or whoever the hell it is to go take a vacation, a VERY long vacation, as in don't come back until something crashes. I treat our customers like they are Gods, and I do it in a cost effective manner, ask anything else from me and I'll stick a harddrive up yer a**.
I am of two minds about this. On one hand, if you *DON'T* take pains to anonymize your travels on the web you are only asking for trouble; much like getting money out of an ATM in a sleazy part of town alone after dark. As it appears that there is more money to be made than risk to be faced by behaving the way Doubleclick does the result is not suprising. Not that we know of any software companies that have made a similar calculation. OTOH, I would dearly love to see them get their clock cleaned in some sort of class action lawsuit. If the Feds have to deal with the Freedom of Information Act then why should any business be invunerable? Of course the really interesting questions are Who owns the information about you, and towhat nefarious purposes could it put?
Why not a limit on the number of diomain names that can be registered to any individual, company or organization. Phuck anybody who needs more than one or two TLD names.
The great things derived from this picture are: (1)That we now have a new standard, a fresh paradigm, for true suck. an entire order of magnitude upgrade of the standard for excrescence. Plan 9 From Outer Space is Birth of a Nation by comparison, and none of Ed Wood's movies ever lost the inflation-adjusted equivilent of 50M. and (2) I can truly torment my ex girlfriend, who once had a John Travolta poster up in her room, about how her Disco Darling is now an 300lb snot monster. (3) They might HAVE to start up MST3K again just to put this flick in it's proper context.

"If society should give you this right, what does society gain in return?"
It gets better software or other IP. That is the theory, the argument and the justification of IP law.

I would be perfectly happy if an individual or organization could only register ONE second level domain.

Actually, two grammatical errors there, ol' Naz-
contract
Contract An agreement between persons.....
^ Why is this capitalized?
Contract law has its origins thousands of years(ago?)as the early civilizations.....
Tsk tsk tsk
-Not that I don't appreciate and enjoy your postings!
Qouth an A.C....and quite frankly, there's nothing that can provide suffering like a several hundred page poem about hell..
Haven't used '98 or NT much, eh?
Pandora's Planet?
