Your recollection is awful. Calfornia drivers are about the worst in the country. Flashing lights / Lights out, be prepared for the most incompetent driving you will ever witness. I was always told how great the freeways are designed, how great the drivers are, and how well maintained the roads are. The northeast dealing with freeze/thaw cycles has better maintained roads. People here are too stupid to pull off to the shoulder when they have a minor fender bender or their car starts to stall. Everyone NEEDS to be in the left lane. I have been cut off by soccer mom merging onto the freeway at 50 while the flow is 70 and she just floats across 4 lanes so she can park it in the far left. Maryland and the surrounding areas are impressive how quickly people will get out of the left lane. I've driven for miles in CA with 4 dumbasses driving the same exact speed side by side by side by side.
The pay offered was pretty good. There are unfortunately tons of awful developers out there. The good ones find a position they like are pretty much settle in. I have a network of very good developers who when a contract ends / company goes out of business, I will immediately refer them where ever I am at the time because I know how crappy a lot of available IT workers are.
I get a pretty good feel for what level someone is when they complain about not being able to find a position. Any time a contract runs out or I am ready to move on, I easily find a new position. On the other hand, I've heard script kiddies crying that they know perl / php / ruby... and can't find a job. Yet it is those same ones with YEARS of experience who code everything inline, don't know how to utilize classes, look at me funny when I ask why they aren't using a dictionary....
BTW, I don't pay for IT workers, I am a developer myself, I've just been pulled in a lot to help with screaning. But when someone who doesn't know what an interface is and wants $100/hr, I usually try to find out where they currently work. And these aren't fringe cases, I get to interview these people back to back. It amazes me that companies are WILLING to pay so much for so little.
Similar to china, those who make it over here are the cream of the crop because it takes money. Now, if you are comparing them to california, then yes, that would be true as california has the worst schools in the country even while spending almost the most. As for many illegals in southern california, they have come over not on merit, but for good money. Many come here to make the money, send it home and then get out. That is the problem, integration is not a goal compared to many other groups. There was a comparison of mexicans and asians in a school district in SoCal with equivalent socio-economic states and even though the school was 80% mexican, 90% of honors kids where asian. It is because a B was reason for punishment for the asian kid while the mexican family was focused on working so grades aren't important. I am not arguing any race is dumber than any other, it is more the mindset that is a problem. For a state with a $15billion deficit, the estimated $10billion it spends on health care and school for illegals seems pretty important. Now yes, I am just focussing on a single state but it is an example of why illegals are an issue. They bring down the rest of the students in general.
I've been involved in hiring and the quality of IT workers out there is pretty low. A lot of developers looking for jobs in IT SHOULD be unemployed. They should be working at a fast food place (not in technology, slinging burgers). If you are a decent software architect / developer (don't even have to be outstanding) you can find a job pretty easily right now. If you don't know about generics, design patterns, multithreading.... either start reading or change careers.
implementation. Take a look at how countries that have signed are doing under its rules. The US is actually doing better than most in terms of emmissions % of 1990.
A nuclear power plant will produce on average 80-85% capacity with 90%+ uptime. Uptime for solar will be at most 50% as you only have sunlight for 10-12 hours. Then, will it be producing 100% capacity for those 10-12 hours? No.
there are down sides, there are too many benefits to not. Just about everything becomes a deduction. Retirement is better - Look into SEP IRA, you can contribute 40% up to $25,000. Yeah, you don't get holidays, but that gets worked into your rate.
One thing though, Incorporate (S-Corp). It will save you money. You pay yourself a reasonable salary and then get the rest through disbursments. Then you only pay self employment tax on the salary portion (about 15% on up to $84,000).
If he truly wasn't working on this, I could understand. But if you read the ruling. He was working on a product with a subordinate for reverse engineering an app to high level code for the company. If he truly was working on it, he should have disclosed it when he started working there and possibly filed a patent.
OK, so I embellished a little, but basically that is what the case is. -Yes, very poor research was done when setting up the farms in question which ended up being in many birds migratory paths(fact) (which, although I am drawing a conclusion here, the raptors are getting killed while hunting these birds on their migratory path more than likely). -Yes, most environmentalists in california are soccer moms driving 12mpg suvs (ok, this one I am just guessing on, but I have seen a good couple dozen H2's with green party stickers on 'em, go figure).
Maybe the dumb @sses who planned this didn't put the farm in the middle of bird migratory paths, there wouldn't be a problem. There are no major problems elsewhere. Only in California, the "environmentalists" drove up to their respective city halls in their oh-so enviro friendly hummers with a case of not in my back yard and proclaimed, put it out there, it will do plenty of good there.
Trust me, I am currently suing my prior employer with several coworkers for requiring OT. Federal law says you must make at least $27.xx an hour to be excepmt, california law says $41 (43 this year). And these excemptions are all &&. It is not a || b || c, it is a && b && c.
involved in a lawsuit against my prior company for forcing 50+ hour workweeks (We were required to be in at least 8-7, it wasn't because we were just trying to get something done). There is also a 3 year statute of limitations so do it soon if you have a case.
this topic (if you haven't read it already). The basic idea is to break out all parts that don't work across the different platforms into their own sections of code (classes/interfaces) assuming you aren't doing that already. Then when you do updates (that will hopefully work platform independantly) you can just right those sections once. Pretty obvious but I have seen so many places with this same issue who actually have completely seperate code bases rather then breaking parts out.
Unfortunately if you are already doing this then you are probably screwed unless someone releases.NET CLR's for all those platforms.
I would agree with you if those same "rules of society" stated I didn't have to work 70 hour work weeks because the management weasles have managed to slash the timeline in half and double the requirements. Either give me the same normal hours that all the sales people get or give me special privileges. If I have to code for 36 hours straight, I better damn well be comfortable or I will be a complete bitch.

Hotmail was great until MS converted it to windows.
You do know that solar is one of the most expensive generation methods, right?
A nuclear power plant will produce on average 80-85% capacity with 90%+ uptime. Uptime for solar will be at most 50% as you only have sunlight for 10-12 hours. Then, will it be producing 100% capacity for those 10-12 hours? No.
account you get 10 hours / day you can halve that number plus, will it be producing 500 every hour of those 10 hours? No.
Pointers are available in C# and C++.Net

left and right (and not from being dropped either).
I didn't really hear much at all about it until 96. When did the beta start?
(for initial testing) and opened it up to everyone in 98. Drexel started in 2k.
MS created some problems with the w2k conversion :/

California has it's own minimum exemption wage.

They are the most annoying people around. They just won't leave no matter how often you say no.
