Unusable! you mean for Mame-type gaming? Why, back in my day, we were happy if we could get a readable font and a color other than green or orange!
Seriously, Nintendo is very tight with proprietary intellectual property, and it is probably too much effort to try and put *nix on it. I'm sure wireless drivers will be a nightmare, especially. PS3, on the other hand, sounds like it was a bit rushed into production, and offers 'expandability' and seems therefore more likely to be hackable.
You may be overly trusting in the article writer. The writer may have deliberately misinterpreted the article so as to create a controversy, base on the study's title. The idea that behavior doesn't influence evolution would actually be a whole lot more controversial among people who understand the subject.
You could post exactly the same information, put a headline to the effect that it supports 'intelligent design theory,' and watch the outraged comments pile up! What fun!
I think you're quite right. You failed to mention the tack that many players also took, which was to rely on Windows Media Player. If WMP was good enough, iTunes and maybe iPod would not get where it is.
/sarcasm/"Yeah- and They say almost word for word the same for Crack addiction as they do alchoholism! I knew rock couldn't be so bad!!!"/sarcasm/
You may have a point that its sloppy research. Maybe these guys can't do really good research because they stay away from the internet!!!;) But, internet fees can be quite substantial for someone who is already in debt. We may be talking about people who really do live in their mothers' basements, and are spending way beyond what low paying jobs can support. (people who never recovered from the dot-com boom for example.)
I'm sure people who have 'internet addiction' have more serious underlying problems, and its a lousy diagnosis, but I'm also sure there are people who spend way too much for internet access.
Shortchanged is not the word, Edison purposefully discredited Tesla and his ideas, and Tesla, not being the ruthless businessman that Edison was, ended up poor and insane. He was not just forgotten, he was (figuratively) buried alive. I think one can compare them to Gates with DOS vs Gary Kildall and CP/M. "Maybe if Edison was smarter he wouldn't perspire so much!" N. Tesla
"Designed for gamers, by gamers" That's completely unimpressive, especially when it comes to audio equipment. What the hell do "gamers" bring to the table- Requests for bigger 'splosions? Special detectors for when Mommy calls dinner's ready? Give me a break!
Damn! I always assumed Spock, or Data or some other Star Trek character said "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means!" I'm handing in my Geek card. I am unworthy.
I didn't know about gmail POP acess. Thanks! BTW, in the early days of the web, I was looking at old terminals and discovered APL terminals. APL terminals were designed to use the APL language (they had a special keyboard with extra characters) They were part of an assumption that computer processing was going to be offered like a utility. Obviously this was quite a while ago, I did my research from books more than the internet. It is amazing how the PC brought us decentralized information and communication services. Things could have been much different.
I'm sure you're convinced of this yourself and want to help. This theory makes a lot of sense intuitively, and its sound advice, clinically. But there's philosophical, etymological problems here about what constitutes "happiness." In a strictly materialistic philosophy, perhaps proper Serotonin levels in the brain IS happiness. Kurt Vonnegut has explored in fiction some of the issues about the consequences of happiness= mental health hygeine. Long term maintainence of healthy brain chemistry might be good advice, but does it really lead to "happiness?" In other words, "what's it all about, Alfie?"
Neo-Darwinist 'survival of the fittest' would suggest that the people who leave the most offspring are the happiest. "Fittest" turns out to means leaving genetic decendents (this means bothers, sisters, nephews and nieces count as well as children and grandchildren.)
Of course, if 'craving to better oneself' means screwing your brains out as often as possible, that would be entirely consistant.
According to the historian Herodotus of Halicarnassus, in Lydia Solon offended Croesus when he was asked "Who is the happiest man you have ever seen?", instead of complimenting the king he said "I can speak of no one as happy until they are dead". It was recalling this story which, again according to Herodotus, saved Croesus from execution when his kingdom was overcome by Cyrus's invading Persians.
What's social interaction? Television and TV commercials have already done this. Now ISPs are the middlemen now, but nothing else has changed. Certainly in suburban America, everyone seems increasingly isolated. I assume that's true elsewhere, but I don't know, 'cause I don't go anywhere anymore. (Note to mods: I'm dead serious)
You didn't auto-link the URL (hint:instructions below the Post Comment window) And its Foresight is at 0.9 release stage, not yet 1.0. There are PPC Linuxes you could've recommended, but you didn't have the Foresight!
Apple did a lot of laying off and shrinking of R&D before the recent change in fortunes. I don't know what you consider "post-bubble," because Apple had a lot of problems previous to the internet bubble, and as a hardware, not an internet company, mostly impervious to "The Bubble" You're also giving credit to whole corporations "HP is tanking and laying off..." where you should be looking at the CEOs at the time of these decisions. Its easy to look like a smartguy when you're being so stupid.
I'm fairly confident that even with extra organizing, gamers can't outvote "concerned parents." It should be fairly obvious that it would be better to make this cause part of a larger anti-censorship movement, but personally I'm not gonna waste my time on letters unless I have some convincing poll numbers that there's a close contest. "If voting was effective, it would have been outlawed." unknown author
Sorry for the bitterness, but this is simply a Proposal, and the fact that Forbes quotes FT (which is a london-based publication) appears to be lazy, sensationalistic reporting. It seems likely to me that it will be PDF, which is already widely used in MA gov, and not OpenDocument, that will be seriously considered. I'd provide a link, but you just have to look at the language this article uses: "proposal," "report said," etc. This is simply political positioning (or posing, really) and not serious legislation. There was a similar proposal to switch to Open Office in a specific MA government office (I forgot which) earlier this year, and it fell on its face. (I beleive M$ offered them a steep discount)
Cinerella is already forked into http://cvs.cinelerra.org/about.html I was personally wondering about Mac OSX, but from Herionewarrior.com: "Video processing takes too long to do on a single computer. In fact no matter how fast the computer, no matter how much tediously hand optimized assembly language is behind it, it's Gaul awful slow. Every video program has a clustered rendering system of some kind and Cinelerra is no exception.
The biggest difference between this renderfarm and normal renderfarms is you don't need to pay for node licenses. You can keep installing nodes without paying for either the operating system or the application." So, this seems to be specifically for budget clustered rendering. Check their link to sourceforge.com. How droll!
I was tempted to mod funny, but with a name like "rampant mac," I'm surprised you didn't point out the obvious, why use a linux environment if you can run Mac OSX? Unless its for geeks putting together a tech cast ala Dr Dobb's http://technetcast.ddj.com/, its seems likely ease-of-use would trump OSS software for would-be budget filmmakers. Apple is pursuing the budget A/V geek market, and offering free-as-in-beer software (and Firewire for videocameras) with Mac minis. I don't do video editing myself, but are they aiming to eventually port to OSX or am I missing something?
Actually the new rules say that Open Formats should be provided in addition to whatever other format of choice is used. But have no fear, the representatives of my state are likely to comply with the wishes of M$ and people like you. Those corrupt bastards are just looking for some backstratching from M$
Your quite right, but this confusion comes up a lot, perhaps because- "the word gene... is shared by many disciplines, including classical genetics, molecular genetics, evolutionary biology and population genetics. Because each discipline models the biology of life differently, the usage of the word gene varies between disciplines. It may refer to either material or conceptual entities."
