The Aussie ban is just the beginning. I work in a videogame store and I was informed by management that GTA3 was going through the paperwork of being pulled off shelves....the shipments are getting considerably smaller and fewer..so get it while you can!
I was really surprised to see this article here seeing as Open Source magazine featured an extensive article on this subject...a year ago! And MIT's Technology Review did it two months ago. Clockless technology is a marvelous concept that will take forever and a day to catch on because it simply isn't economical for anyone at this point...maybe one day though...since people's need for power and speed to continues to grow. It's the age old question of who has the biggest, uhm stuff, only we're dealing with who can put out the fastest chip first...when will companies begin to put the drive of the market and the needs of their consumers before their own desire to have the "bestest" products now?
Hmmm didn't I see this in a movie, ??? Oh yes that's right in Toys, when the general * attempted to take over the factory and recruited all the kids to play fighter pilot sims as training for the upcoming war,,,,hmmm. This is a rather interestng can of worms, if it's only used for raising interest in the armed forces then wwhoo hoo but it could go another way...although if sony startted developing decent sims for training purposes it may not necessarily be a bad thing....maybe just more expenisve for the army. I fing it a little interesting though that the US Army is contracting with a japanese based corporation for possible training purposes....
It occurs to me that there was a big issue a while back on how security holes had already been discovered in XP and yet Microsoft forged ahead with plans for launch (no big surprise there). But Ihave been curious as to the nature of these holes. I'm an asst. net admin and I was unimpressed with theprofessional release of XP we recieved but I am interested to know...Can anyone provide concrete information on the nature of XP security issues?
I think it's probably just a rumor, from everything I've read about Linus's views on XP....he doesn't care. He seems to be more interested in Linuxdevelopment than XP marketing ^_^ Just a thought
I think it will be interesting to see how many generic people actually elect to upgrade. I've heard nothing but opposition even from so called computer illiterates. I was listening to the radio this morning and heard it mentionedon a few stations (including Howard Stern's commentary) all of the jockeys I listened to said they had no plans of contributing to Microsoft's bank account, and even though they had no computer knowledge, the biggest argument I head was the way Microsoft is "piping" applications output (ie prints from digital pictures) to their business partnersonline (ie fuji).....I eagerly await the general public's reaction to this mess
Sheesh!
All of you are so quick to jump down this guys throat, but how many of us have gone into jobs where some nitwit before us made a bunch of really bad decisions...that everyone is used to now , or had a purchasing department that wasn't about to let you purchase source code because they felt no need to spend the money(etc)? I work in a mac/linux environment and before I got there some of the mac machines were running os7.6!! I had to drag people kicking and screaming up to 9.1 and literally force them leave some very proprietary software behind. This guy may or may not have made the choice to use binary module only, and even if he did, everyone makes mistakes...live and learn! Besides that he does make some good points about the extremely rapid development of the kernel...how much of that is progress for progress' sake and how much is people developing as fast as they can ??
This legislation is obviously meant to setup government controls for keeping tabs on exactly what digital media the populus has access to. This certainly doesn't necessarily cry for an end to all linux! Unfrotunately what it will mean is a serious redirection in the way that distribution developers are allowed to distribute. We are looking at the possibility of future legislation enacted to establish mandatory (illegal to remove) source code in certain open source applications...and that is a scary thought...it's like the gov. is trying to block a rushing river with a stick and mud dam, they'll only succeed if they get enough people working together at once....sad thing is, they have the people to do it....
it seems that your comments are in essence directed at FF and I find many of your points valid but if you examine the development of square's games as a whole over the past few years, they are trying out a number of new battle technics in an effort to eliminate that crappy FF battle system. Character development is definately something that needs to be improved upon it seems as if they focused on it a whole lot more back in the beginning before graphics were so important. The storyline has always been phenomenal though. But I have found myself wondering from time to time where the hell that demi dragon got 10,000 gil from and if he's so damned tough, why do i have time to run up to him in the middle of a fight and rummage through his pockets (aka Mug)??? While ff has been sliding downhill in some areas, some of square's other games are creating new and rather innovative ways to kill off every living thing on the planet, (PS did you ever notice that an ecological inbalance never resulted even though you kill off half the planet's life?)
VS was sort of an experimental game for them, testing out the rpg storyline in a tombraider style setting. I think it came out nicely don't you!! I loved the game up unil I got stuck at the Jinn My overall complaint would be that the weapons/energy system was a little rough and complicated but I think in a sequel they could fine tune it and create a stunning game ^_^
ow there sure is a whole lot of negative attitude aimed at squaresoft! First the guy who wrote this "article" says "ho-hum" at the idea of another blockbuster game from square? What is so boring about the best rpg gaming company ever pushing the envelope again? I've been a loyal and avid square fan since the beginning, both imports and domestic games, and I'm superhyped at the idea of a crossplatform FF. The movie was great and FF10 is just awesome!!! (Get it early if you can speak japanese). As for the people who have questioned this article's pertinance to slashdot....I'd have to say that not all of us care about everything that has been written here before but it you don't care for the article, don't post a reply. If squaresoft is guilty of anything then it's releasing Final Fantasy's too close together and not allowing for waiting periods in between. The PS2 has a plethra of extremely well designed games (did I mention you can play Q3 and Unreal Tournament?) with nothing but good things to come. The gaming world doesn't consist purely of Quake and Half-Life! Square should be commended for their brillant storytelling andvisuals, not hissed at because people feel they are becoming to much of a mainstream conglomerate. Anyways I for one eagerly await the arrival of ff11
This raises the question over who is responsible for copyright infringments in domain names. Should the owner of the domain be held accountable or the host? Are people going to have to be more concious of the domains of the people they host? What I find slightly unnerving is that it would mostly likely take legistlation to implent true copyrighting in domain names and to assign where the blame lies for violation...which could be far reaching =\
Why are they worrying about solider of fortune? there's a game (I forget the name, which isn't helpful but oh well) that allows you to play a police officer and you are allowed to handcuff/beat and kill people.including some poor guy's mom who runs out of the house to stop you from arresting her son. My question is...how is this article related to Soldier of Fortune's 18 and up classification? All it talks about is the "hardships" that animals must endure and how wonderful it is to be vegan. As many vegan friends as I have I can honestly say that this is just too oversensitive and idealistic. Yeah so what if baby cows are fed chemicals to help soften their meat? so what if they are kept under poor conditions. Perhaps you haven't stopped to think about what would happen if we suddenly released all these animals. Homo Sapiens and their ancestors were orginally hunters, gatherers, and woodsmen..but that doesn't mean we still are. We have evolved/digressed into a lazy animal that alters our environment instead of adapting, if you took a modern human and stuck it, defenseless in a large forest (somewhere they were unfamiliar with) then that human would most likely die. Cows are the same, the fat heifers of today are definately not the hardened bovines of yesteryear, they don't have a good sense of danger, they're fat and they'd die. Not only that, but the question of waste management comes into play. Hog and chicken waste are stored in large lagoons, above ground water levels, in order to secure the safety of the populous, but if you release all these fluffy cute little animals..they'll be free to defecate or die and rot whereever they please, creating hazardous conditions for residents within about 50 miles. Your intentions may be good but they aren't always practical. as for solider of fortune..."blow shit up!"
To be honest I find all this a little disturbing. If Quova's purposes were trully 100% legit why would they feel the need to conceal them? and why would they seek to attain the ability of commencing their "security tests" without tripping anyones alarms? Maybe I'm paranoid, but the idea of a startup "company" officially declaring that they are trying to get around people's security measures is unnerving to me. I am also befuddled as to how running a portscan is going to tell you all kinds of personal information about someone's lifestyle..do they make special firewalls for lesbians or something? Run a port scan and you can immediately tell someone is jewish and they like to play tennis? The only way I can see this being relevant is that if they trully wish to advertise they'll know who to throw sales pitches for better security at.
my question is, can this case trully be described as an act of slander? How can the justice system arrest people for internet "bad mouthing" when they don't have a definition of exactly what does and does not constitute as slander and what is just harmless aggression, when it comes to the internet? and for that matter how can we define that? Millions of highschoolers call each other worse than sluts, and homosexuals multiple times on a daily basis, and yet this kid gets arrested and possibly charged because of the fact he said it on the internet? Unless these terribly "vicious" (heavy on the sarcasm) remarks of his on this website, caused some seriously detrimental effect to the lives of one of the people in question...why is his house being searched and his property being seized? In an internet full of websites about child porn, terrorist organizations, sacrifices, and cop killers...the "ever so swift" law enforcement department goes after the "really big fish"..an irritated kid who called his classmates pot smoking sluts
