Just remember, someday what youa re doing for the company will still be important but their bottom line will need to lose something, like your salary. Maybe not tomorrow or next week, but eventually. Yeah and I know, you'll just use your experience to get a job somewhere else.
Amen to that. Do I complain that ALSA is a third party app to teh 2.4 kernels? No. I just wait patiently until 2.6 comes out and I an make a simple kernel config selection and be done with it. My only fear is that the OpenVortex won't be integrated.

So, as other posters have pointed out. A comparable hard drive rig woul dbe like 2000 bucks. Double that for RAID and you are at 4000 bucks.
