Which is one of the reasons why I don't own a Tivo.
Is it possible to run a Tivo standalone? - without connecting to their subscription service - which I wouldn't want anyway.
I think so, I dunno as I don't own one either. May build one here soon though.
Imagine buying a VCR and discovering it has a secret disabling chip that can be activated remotely by the manufacturer. The manufacturer rents you the VCR rather than selling it and fires off a 'disable' signal if you don't pay your bill. Now Big Media Company comes along and says "You must disable all these VCRs because they are being used to make unauthorised copies of copyright material.
You mean like what Tivo could do if they so wanted. Say in the case of wanting monthly fees from those that paid lifetime fees?
They did not even contact the developers of Gnucleus before they ripped off their software. And they ban anyone from the Music City chat room who even mentions the existence of Gnucleus.
Where does it say that they have to contact the developers? Hell I download all kinds of open source software and I have yet to tell them that I have it, and have changed it.
If they did, we will see a rise in hosting of servers in "nationless" sites such as The Principality of Sealand [sealandgov.com]
Isn't Sealand just another entity of the UK?

I guess *that's* why AT&T Wireless laid off its entire Fixed Wireless division.
Odds they are still very committed to the fixed wireless market. They were just losing a bit of money and needed to get rid of the most obvious source of loss. People
I am sure that they added staff from other divisions. They just expect the new people to do there old jobs as well as new.
Its not true P2P if someone can flip a switch and cut everyone off. P2P is supposed to have no central control so when these programs become illegal(and there's no doubt they will shut them down if they can) they will live on because the network will still be there, and hopefully the project will also still be there living on in some enlightened country without industry sponsored politicians and the DMCA.
Funny I was just thinking...if there was no central server, what is the big deal.
Well, I know it's a given for people who *GASP* have common sense, I.E the populous of most of this board, but it just goes to show how these labels want to blame everyone else but themselves. If they have 50 advance releases of a CD floating around the office and one of them leaks out, you can't blame some 14 year old in Michigan on it, which is what they always do.
It's always the kid with the cable modem that causes the problems, never the person who's complaining in the first place.
And to add to what I said. Sure the new DMB album is gonna be bought up quickly but take a slightly less popular band but one that has a good album coming out. How else do you get people to buy it? Radio? Okay. But what if you slip a copy onto Napster and a bunch of people download it and play it at a party or in their cars. Friends here it and they go buy it.
good luck. I'd say 99% of all content is owned by the RIAA members. they claim to be 5 companies but they've bought up almost all labels in the past 10 years. Here is an old AskSlashdot asking the same:
Non_RIAA?
Actually what I said was when you RENT. You are talking about owning. Here is the FCC link: Link
And here is part of the ruling. As I said it pertains to the renters. In response to the Further Notice, the Commission now amends the rule, within the bounds of its statutory authority, to give many renters a choice in video programming services. The rule prohibits restrictions that impair the use of dishes and antennas in rented apartments, homes, or other dwellings, and adjacent outside property such as balconies, patios, gardens or yards that are exclusively used by the renter
right on...I can no more quickly put up a dish than I can a basketball hoop in my driveway...I own the townhome, but I own the insides...the external features (siding, windows, landscaping, snow removal, etc) are the responsibility of the association...they are well within their rights to disallow satellite dishes on our roofs.

Is that much of the piracy that happens is actually by EMPLOYEES of these companies.
A lot of piracy is coming from HQ.
Well duh. I mean when Napster was big and you could get the latest from DMB or Metallica before the album was released, you had to have known that somebody on the inside leaked it.
Well I was talking more along the lines of right before or right after someone else bought them. Disable the features you paid for as a lifetime subscriber. Sure it'd be screwing their customers but they don't have customers anymore at this point.
And to get the Tivo to work again all you'd need to do is subscribe again.
Would there be lawsuits? Probably. But my old employer was bought out by a bigger company. It changed some of the licesing etc for some of our products. Did some customers leave? yeah but the majority stayed and paid.
Like everyone has said those lifetime subscriptions are only as good as a the company that issued them is around.
Have some faith, they are a good Company, with a good business model. Besides, I would still have two perfectly good PVR's, only difference is I'd have record manually and I'd be out $450 ($200 for one, $250 for the other), I lost a lot more than that when the Stock Market crashed and everyone lost money.
Call me cynical but what if they diabeled the boxes right before they went belly up?
Not all of us were 'smart' enuff to get into teh stock market. Sure I may have not have gotten rich but I'm not poor now either.
Nope, I have two TiVo's and two lifetime subscriptions. I figure even if TiVo starts to go under, someone will buy them out.
And the odds that the buyer of Tivo will honor those lifetime subscriptions? If they are losing as much money as everyone says, I'd bet that lifetime subscriptions go away real fast.
beleive it or not, an essay is something a lot of colleges require of students who violate certain policies. IMO, it's better than getting kicked out or jailtime if it was something illegal.
Like I said liberal bullshit. If they violate the rules, kick em out. Making them write a essay only makes them feel like they won.
I think so, I dunno as I don't own one either. May build one here soon though.

Public comments mean nothing. Get over it.

Do you rent? If so the owners can't ban you from having a satelitte. FCC rules and all.
Perhaps that is why the world is so messed up today: "I didn't think I'd get caught but I did, so um let me just write an essay".
Like I said liberal bullshit. If they violate the rules, kick em out. Making them write a essay only makes them feel like they won.
Sealand???? Come on. That place will be British territory again before the end of July.
Why the hell wasn't your company paying for a business line? Sounds like they want to get rid of you....and now they have a reason.
Thankfully, everyone from those trying to sell stuff to those saying "quit it!" all had to write a 500-word essay about why what they did was wrong
amen to that
Is he looking for a Software Engineer?
