IMHO, SunPCi is not for majority of computer users. I used both PC and workstation, and I never want to play Windows games on my workstation running GAUSS jobs. People don't want something that handle everything. Most people want a tool that handle specific jobs and handle that well.

  2. Who needs fast computers? on U.S. Significantly Lowers Export Limitations · · Score: 1

One Chinese nuclear weapon scientist recalled that they had teams of mathmaticians doing calculations manually in the early days of research. This is the only way they can get around the problem that they do not have computers in calculation.

I don't know how complicate today's computer is and how powerful it is. But what's the most important resource is the brainpower. Given enough brainpower, the lack of fast computers is not going to be a problem.

Export restriction is to prevent powerful weapon technology falls on to the hands of assholes, just like security measures of computers and networks on the internet are to prevent script kiddies and malicious crackers. You won't put security measures to the level that nobody can use your system. A country shouldn't put up export restriction to the level that hurts herself in all aspects.

The original export restriction is a joke. Some ways of export restriction are still needed, though whether the current change is effective and helpful subjects to some debates.

Experiment: let the authors to choose whether to put their books online for free, and compare the sales figure overtime (use the sales figure before free release as control) or to other authors' works.

Conclusion? Extremely difficult to draw any scientific conclusion because of the SELF SELECTION. The authors choose to release their books free because they get comparatively higher benefits from the promotional/network effects than the authors choose not to release online. However, comparing sales figure overtime or across authors capture this comparative difference at the same time.

A better natural experiment is to randomly releasing the books free, independently from any authors' or publishers' preferences.

Or we model the decision and incorporate exogeneous factors in this estimation (Heckman's 2-stage method?) AFAIK, I haven't come across anything in this area yet.

Also, in reality most local government officials don't know about how to determine any violation. There is a study that most local labor offices do not have any records of mass layoff (though WARN requires companies to provide information.)

And the problem is not those workers getting screwed. Even they are compensated, it's just plain cold to get back everything from the worker before telling the worker he/she is fired. In this situation, the worker can't make a scene.

Any soul who turned from natural sciences / engineering to social sciences would agree that studying human behaviour and society scientifically is much more difficult. Look, is it necessary to have a geek culture to develop good technology? Let's not forget China was advance in technology for a long time in history. There were no geek culture, yet there're ways to develop technology.

If you ask, is there any hacker's mind in China? Yes, there is. Do hackers in China really hack? They do. Do they try to distinguish themselves from others? No, they don't, because that will troubled them and block them from their hacking activities. That's the way Chinese prefer, express implicitly and practical. They also fight for the freedom.

It's the COST of communication that you can't find a network of hackers as you found in western world. I know, it has been rather affordable in the western world for a long time. But the same communication system is expensive in China for the last 50 years even the price is the same as in America: consider the living standard!!!

One more thing: I don't know why western people are so against communist countries, after all, communism is a western product!!! The bad things you saw in communist countries are not because the people in power are communists, it is because they are human! From the beginning how the communists get the power is by killing each other, and the system preserves this mechanism. I know this is offensive, but I do think, if you put any great western leader in a communist country's government, he would have been either 1. got rid of by others or 2. be as "bad" as other people in a communist government.

A tiny supplement here. The overall "happiness" is not necessary the same under price discrimination. It's Pareto optimal (overall "happiness" maximized) when it's PERFECTLY price discriminated. However, if it isn't PERFECTLY price discriminated, the profit maximizing behaviour could decrease the overall "happiness." In reality, perfectly price discrimination doesn't exist.

So, we have a relative high percentage at first. This is not the same as the experiment in Scientific America, coz' that's simultanenous game. We now have a dynamic game, which is not the same.

The following is my analysis, borrowed from some observation of voting. I read somewhere that the voting rate of an election is higher when there is no clear leader in poll. This is because, a person may think that she/he is the marginal voter who make the difference by voting.

So, when the percentage is large initially, especially for a famous writer like King, the coming reader may put herself/himself as the marginal reader. $1 is not a big deal, at least it's less costful than going to poll station to vote. If I really like it, I will definitely pay, when I find that if I didn't pay will make a difference of all-or-nothing.

So it's going to work. If it fail, it's not because people are selfish, it's because less than 75% of people who downloaded his novel do not like this story.

Brands, advertisement, marketing, etc.. can't be eliminated as long as it's costful for people getting to know some products. There's reason people buy the products being promoted. People are not stupid forever, if the goods are not up to their satisfaction, they won't buy again. Some may think it's unfair to small companies which produce better products. However, it's always unfair to small companies, since large companies can always devote more resources to develop products that are superior than any small companies' (they just didn't).

Unless some clever social activists can find a costless way to let people know about the best products, marketing from big corps is always there.

The arguments against sweat shops are also problematic: workers' welfare may not be improved without sweat shops, they may simply get unemployed and starved. The existence of sweat shops is not just because the employers are crude, but also the lack of "good" alternative employers out there to hire them. I'm not saying eliminating sweat shops is bad, or big companies should make products from sweat shops. The best way to deal with sweat shops problem, is to establish firms that treat workers well in those developing countries. If treating workers well can improve productivities, it can be more cost effective than those sweat shops.
