  1. Perfect example of media knee-jerk on Another Plane Down in New York · · Score: 1

    Not to harp, but the article said the plane was a Boeing Airbus A300. As other posters have said, we need to wait and sort this stuff how. Bad as it may sound, lets hope this was an accident... The media have a REALLY bad habit of reporting without checking the facts. Boeing (US company) is a competetor of Airbus (multinational european company). If they cant even get the most basic facts straight, why would anyone believe their posturing and theorizing.

    Unfortunately the ratings will be decimated by Survivor tonight

    Since when has decimate come to mean anihilation? Decimate means to eliminate one out of 10. Hardly a majority of the viewing audience, but unfortuantely tiny percentage differences in ratings do ultimately cause a show's demise. I just dont see 1 out of every 10 people who intend to watch The Tick tonight being pulled away by Survivor. The demographics between the audiences for Survivor and The Tick dont really overlap much: tabloid junkies who would watch grass grow if it were on TV, versus a cultish following of (generally) more intelligent people able to pick up subtle references, but able to appreciate slapstick as well.

  5. Musical TV episodes are hardly original on The Tick Premieres Tonight on FOX · · Score: 1

    I'm sure that brief spark of originality will go completely unnoticed

    Musical TV episodes are hardly original. In fact, they are a major category for when a show "jumps the shark", i.e. when everything in a series after a specific episode goes downhill. Have they run out of original ideas and now have to stoop to recycled gimmicks from other shows? Only time will tell...

    I also bet you wont see this story repeated on CNN or the NY Times (significant quote below). Another side effect that the frenzy causes, that Katz didnt mention, is that it brings viewers back. The terrorism stories are, unfortunately, better for ratings than your regular sweeps-week crap, and although their reporting is important and (usually) somewhat accurate, dont think they wont overlook a true story or fact that might make people feel a little more secure quite yet...

    The only mass deaths apparently connected with anthrax came from an accidental release of apparently about one trillion spores at the Sverdlovsk (now Yekatinerinburg) biological weapons compound in the former Soviet Union in 1979. Records show that of the 1.2 million residents of the city, only 66 perished.

    They said this as if it were a bad thing. Think of it another way. Their job is to represent their constituancy, those people that elect them. If you have no roll in electing them, they are not supposed to care about your opinion. I would be curious to know what the original poster felt about lobbyists or corporate donors who influence elected officials. You cant have it both ways: does the senator from New York represent the people/businesses of New York, or do they represent everyone that bothers to send them some correspondance? I think the answer is simple...

  10. Still a big bomb. but what about economics? on Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft == Anti-Terrorist Device? · · Score: 1

    The planes still may have been impressive bombs, but maybe the attacks would have been economically more difficult for the terrorists to pull off. I dont think its much of a stretch to say that their funding came from, if not one or more middle eastern states, at least individuals who owe their entire fortunes to the sale of oil. If airplanes could run on hydrogen fuel cells or other non-oil-based alternatives, one can assume we would have that technology in cars and other devices. (I base this assumption on the fact that planes are designed to be as light as possible. Current cells are quite heavy and it requires so many of them, that is why they are not used in cars much until recently. If my assumption is wrong, please correct me.)

    If we, as a culture, become less dependant upon oil, the individuals/countries sponsoring these groups will have less income. Decreasing demand would not only decrease the volume of their sales, but the price per volume would decrease as well as suppliers competed to stay in business.

    Of course, I realize that if we take away this source of income, these groups will probably find a way to get it elsewhere. However, most of these governments have made so much money in oil, they have forsaken development of other industries. When it dries up, they will be in trouble, at least for a while. I think these groups would experience the same effects.

    Third, you are wrong (not even your "provincial prick" statement is true) because you are oversimplifying things. The Taliban were scholars, yes, most educated in Pakistan. However, their "soldiers" are were not mujahedin. They are mostly those men who grew up in the squalor of the refugee camps and villages during the war with the Soviet Union. People who have never known peace in their lives. Those that were around before 1979 and remember a more peaceful existance, are mostly against the Taliban - who took power only 5 years ago from the infighting that occurred AFTER the Soviets were expelled.

There was a poll in the NY Times either Monday or Tuesday that said that 6 out of 10 people polled believe that we are currently in a recession. This just isnt true. A recession is not a perception - it is measurable. To be in recession, we have to have 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth. The last quarter measured (Q2) had the slowest growth since 1992, but it was still growth in the positive. Even if Q3 demonstrates negative growth, that wont be announced until mid to late October. It will be 3 months after that that Q4 is announced. Even if Q3 and Q4 turn out to both have negative growth, not even Alan Greenspan will not be able to say we are actually in a recession until at least the end of January.

    What you should have pointed out is that we did not drop the atomic bombs on Japan immediately after Pearl Harbor. After 3 1/2 years of watching both our marines and their soldiers get slaughtered over every 10 square mile piss-ant island in the south pacific, it was time to put an end to things quickly. Dropping the bomb did 2 things: demoralized Japan instantly into believing they would be annihilated if they keep fighting (they had no idea we only had 2 bombs at the time). 2) Showed the rest of the world that we held the trump card.
