I submitted this earlier but I guess the editors wanted to wait until they could get a copy of the complaint (understandable). The story about it is at CRN earlier today.
Sure, call me a karma whore, but there are some quotes/explanation from the executive director of EPIC.
It was my understanding that he wrote a program that decrypted from the ebooks format into PDF format. If ebooks were PDFs, everyone would be able to read them with their Acrobat Reader already. Like MPAA and CSS, Adobe wants to cash in on the licencing of the decryption algorithm from the manufacturers who will make the hardware.
You proved my point when you said when it doesn't, someone is at fault. Someone, along the way, programmed it wrong. It may not be your mistake, but someone along the way made it. The system is only doing what it has been told to do, which in this case, would be the wrong thing.
As for you calling me a troll (unless, of course, that is your sig), not only do you have no idea what a troll is, you also dont know how to identify a tongue-in-cheek remark.
I only scanned that site last week. I would never guess Adobe would be in that area. Good place then.:) Theres not much open area in that neighborhood except that. --------
Im wondering why this protest was organized at the library. Wouldn't the local offices of Adobe and/or the FBI be more appropriate? Or, even though I hate the name, somewhere in Silicon Alley, were you would find more people that would be directly affected by such issues?
OK, at the risk of the allmighty karmalossthroughofftopic(tm), I will rebutt. The original article asked for a translation. I think something more was intended than for someone to cut and paste the Russian article into Babelfish or Freetranslation. This is a very difficult read, and I dont really get any idea what this guy was thinking. Someone that actually speaks Russian (or can read it) could probably do a useful translation.
It's just a theory, and as such has yet to be conclusively proven
Yes, just like the theory if evolution?
put forward fictionally in the book
I added the bold, no other comment is necessary here.
As another poster pointed out, we will not destroy the earth, no matter what we do. However, we may not. Environmentalists need to realize that most people dont really give a damn about the earth itself (just look out your window while driving some day, youll see more trash in a couple miles than there is in most town dumps).
If the per-unit price is decent enough, maybe I can start restocking my bookshelves
All this for only $30,000!!!! .....but wait, THERE'S MORE!!!
Seriously though, from the article, they envision this machine used primarily in parts of the world where book distribution is non-existant, or to print really hard-to-find works.
I dont see the price dropping, it will be something libraries, or maybe bookstores, pick up; and they will most likely have to pay whoever holds the rights to that particular book every time they print a copy. The price is prohibitive, this is NOT going to be a Napster. By the time the price drops to anything an individual could reasonably afford, the copyright protections will have long been established.
most of the teachers in elementary schools don't have the first idea how to use Linux, or other non-windows os's
but it would probably be cheaper to hire a full-time person to maintain the systems and train the teachers than pay the licencing fees - especially after the.NET scam begins...
Could bulk email software manuracturers be liable? Should they have to program in checks to make sure its not being used to spam? (at least once some of this pending legislation passes, hopefully). Its something that should be able to be done. If spamcop can determine spoofed IPs, why cant these programs do it beforehand?

It seems most people here are objecting to the opening of new windows, rather than the banner ads we've all come to pretty much see past. Those that block all advertising are in a very small minority.
If everyone were to filter out ads that created popups, the site go out of business. No advertiser pays for impressions any more - they pay for clickthroughs (and some are even only paying if a user stays a while and/or buys something). Ads that generate no clickthroughs will simply be cancelled by the site.
Unless I missed something somewhere else, the timeout is being set here to 24 hours. Im on NT and cant see the DAY= in the cookie code but I suspect that DAY= may be referring to something else. In the cookie set on my system, there are 7 distinct sections, the one which this page seems to affect is called "x10removeads.dat" I set a local page up with exp.setTime(tdy.getTime() + 1000*60*60*24*3000) and ran it and it DID change some of the numbers, but I cant be certain of success. I ran a test with alert(exp.getTime()) and that number doesnt corellate with any in the cookie. Can anyone else with more cookie exp take this any farther?
Otherwise, I guess Ill find out Monday if this works.
No, I do not live in CT, which is why I can be objective. Its a simple fact that after driving for 15 years, most of them in New England states, its a simple fact of my observation that if a car blows past me an an ungodly speed, 4 out of 5 times, they have CT plates. Im sorry if this offends you.
Problem is if the fines were that high, people actually wouldn't speed, and the income for the state would dry up--which is what speeding fines are really all about.
Very true! It would just be the start of an endless spiral that would bankrupt the entire nation:
- Fewer auto accidents would lower insurance rates. - Less income for the insurance companies would mean less taxes collected also, another income for the state. (and since CT IS the insurance capital of the world, their state government certainly doesnt want less carnage on the highway!) - Fewer car accidents would put auto body shops out of business! - Trauma centers would have to close! - Crossing guards would be laid off! - Ford and GM would have to put more planned obsolescence into their cars to keep their sales up! - The police would start working on more serious crimes! Fewer robberies, murders, and assaults would reduce insurance rates even more, perpetuating the cycle!
As anyone who has ever driven in CT knows, the state itself uses speeding tickets for revenue. There are plenty of troopers, and they're more than willing to write the most expensive tickets in the US to fast drivers.
Also, as anyone who has ever driven in CT knows, despite the threat of the most expensive tickets in the US, it has little effect on speeding. IMNSHO, the fines in CT are not high enough! They still have the most reckless and dangerous drivers I have ever seen. Especially after getting cut off more than once by a BMW doing 90+ who is continually weaving from the far left to far right lanes, without signalling.
For me, my company has sent me to a lot of education classes over the past year and a half. However, every class I attended had to do with my current job (makes sense). However, if I had to pay for classes myself, I would take courses that interested me.
In the end, an employer paying for my development gets to keep me as a more valuable asset to them - its an investment in THEIR future. If I pay, I better myself to make myself more attractive to other potential employers in the future - its an investment in MY future.

From a first glace at their cookie code, I would say they are full of shit. Although if Im wrong, someone will surely point that out (be gentle
- exp.setTime(tdy.getTime() + 1000*60*60*24)
