  1. NSI recently 'took' Microsoft.com. on Transferring Domains From NSI? · · Score: 1

We could all team up with the NSI and gang up on MS, thus getting their domain off the map and then eliminating their online presence as we know it.

The Japaneese would probably like us better, had we nuked the moon and not them. :/ Seeing as how bad it destroyed Hiroshima, the moon would have been real neat.

Yup, that's about what it is. Learning how to use Word, Excel, keyboarding basic documents, etc..

All of which I believe you can do with Star Office quite easily.

  4. Support is why my school won't do Linux. on Linuxcare Responds To Tim O'Reilly's Article · · Score: 3

Linux is not a known word at my school. I think one of the big reasons is, it's free. Usually, free things suck. The free gifts you get for calling those 800 #'s, ya know ... those shitty ones. They don't understand that in this case, free IS better, free IS free, free in this case == stability, something we don't have now. Currently for the whole district, we pay about $90 for each copy of Windows, which totals to over $50,000 for the whole district. We have a site license for a security program, Fortress which is about $10 a copy, Norton Antivirus, $15 a copy, MS Works and MS Office, MS Office is $50 for each machine. When you total that up (which isn't all of it either..) you easily get probably $500,000+ in SOFTWARE ALONE. The machines are pos E-Machines, at $600 a peice. Times that by a whole school district, we won't go there. So why don't they do Linux when it's free? Star Office, when it's free? Security wise, you don't need outside programs...

It's all because of support. There is no support, according to my school. They want to be able to phone someone up, unless they BUY RH or some varient, they don't get that. It's all really just a support issue.

  5. I emailed them and look what I got. on New Internet VCR Service · · Score: 2

I don't think they will stick around long, as I am 100% sure this will find it's way to court, and like they say themselves, without funding a court battle would make them bankrupt.

    *SNIP*

Your probably right we will get a lawsuit, but we also probably fall under
the VCR legal exemptions to the copyright laws. However, right or wrong, we
need financing to fight a lawsuit or we lose by default.

  8. Just my own opinion.. on Microsoft vs. Slashdot Update · · Score: 1

After readinga lot of comments and having a moderate understanding of the laws, I do have something to share. First off, I do think Microsoft is *right* in asking for any removal of comments that contained pastings from their documentation. After all, they do own it. Like someone else said, would you be happy if someone took a peice you wrote, pasted it, and didn't ask for permission? Probably not, so I think you can agree they have a right to feel the way they do.

  9. Depends largely on the OS too. on How Much Manpower Is Behind Your Help Desk? · · Score: 1

I think this topic depends largely on the OS too. See, at my school we have an NT proxy/firewall. All the clients of course, are MS Windows 9x. THe people (teachers in general) using them are as dumb as MS. Therefor, our little tech class of 10 isn't really enough to fix all the problems. Why? Anyone with little skill can manage to fuck WIndows up somehow. With other operating systems such as Linux, it would be very easy to get these clueless teachers a non root account and since they are dumb, and assuming they can pick a decent password, it's probably safe to say these computers WOULD not beak down everyday and wouldn't be compromised. Then our class of 10 techies would probably NEVER have to fix anything, except for hardware. As it is now, not a day goes by we don't fix something.

That's great you ban 300k some odd users, but if they are able to get new usernames, it doesn't seem to me it solved anything. Oh well, if it gets Metallica off Napster's ass, I guess that's all that matters? I do have to say, they have more work because as of this morning, a search for 'Metalica' brought up over 100 results. :)
