Oregon puts a barcode on the back of your license, perhaps using that and your ss # for identification, it would be possible to have 'Terminals' at different places, swipe your license, pick a # according to whom you want to elect... and be done with it. That seems very viable as well.
I think I agree. My internet company, InternetCDS gives you the choice of DSL or wireless, if you can't get DSL, you get wireless. They also promise 256kb both ways, however 90% of the time (and I kid you not..) it's under 100ms but gets to my IP and hits 1000ms. Not only that, if you get two way wireless, for the love of god CHECK AND SEE HOW YOUR ISP UTILIZES THEIR LINKS. Do they have time share? Do they put 50 people on a satalitte that's only designed for 20 users? Can one user take all the bandwidth? Please please, ask these questions and double check BEFORE YOU GET INTO THIS KIND OF THING. However, if it's all setup PROPERLY, it's quite a nice solution..:\
I agree. This is what has prevented me from running Linux as my OS. I think it's stable, prettier, and even compiling my own shit is rather fun, but I don't like having to tweak shit and do this and that and this and that to make shit work.. :
Yup, Ashland, OR has this fiber in home at 1-3 megs both ways, and to top it off it's ONLY $22/m as well. Cheaper and faster than DSL! Only downfalll is you must live in Ashland, but hey I am for moving...:>
First of all, if they changed your provider without your consent (which sounds like what they did, right?) then by all means that is illegal. Also, I know with USWest/QWest they have an available option (which is free I think..) and it basically stops your Long Distance provider from being changed until you tell Qwest YOURSELF that you're ok with it..
I would suggest calling your local carrier up and asking if they offer that same sort of protection, as it seems to work great.
Generally, atleast with MY OWN experiences anytime you have to go through so and so, who goes through so and so who goes through so and so again, you get shitty service. One bottleneck in any of those 3+ bridges, fucks it all up. I had two way wireless from my old ISP who partnered with WantTV. What happened when Sprint bought WantTV? They killed WantTV, which killed all their cable customers and they killed the wireless web from Medford Internet. In general, I think when you go through one person who goes through another and another, you shouldn't expect quick response time or quality work.
I have a big problem with broadband in every house. See the folks on AOL and even on their local ISP's who simply get on the net to check mail and maybe surf a few pages? Possibly get on IRC, go to DALnet, get a few trojans.... now they are under someone elses control? Yeah, just what we need.... every person and their brother with broadband. Gives a new definition to smurf and DDoS attacks!
As an employee of RadioShack, that article is true. You can scan barcodes/UPC's from almost any product and it will take you to a related website. Any RShack product UPC/barcode will bring you to RadioShack, if it doesn't have it's own SKU #, it just brings you to the mainpage. On a side note, USB versions of the Cue Cat will be out VERY soon. You can get one free, generally if you just tell them you're a heavy shopper and ask for a catalog. Also, this technology is fairly new, soon you will see those barcodes like you see in the 2001 RadioShack Unlimited Catalog in magazines like Forbes, etc..
You also have the option of getting a credit history check. I would imagine this is flawed, in that you can put fake #'s and get an 'ok'. In which case, that's how he is doing it.
... you also get what you pay for, which was a peice of shit, so you should have expected that behaviour. On a side note, my school got a massive discount on those, so of course they got a lab FULL of them. The fans indeed are very loud, the power supply is extremely propreitary, they use this dinky ide cable like thing I have never seen before, and they can't stay on a network for more than a few weeks before the thing just forgets it's setting somehow. Anyway, you get what you pay for, but for the love of god, STAY AWAY FROM THE EMACHINES.
US West perhaps? Sounds like the same story here, DSL STILL IS NOT AVAILABLE.... and in the 1 or 2 places it is, the prices are outrageous. On top of that, Charter Communications says it will wire this city for cable, and it still hasn't... they keep lying to us.
.. or you can allow both, so those that prefer to sit on their ass at home, can do so while those who don't have a clue can still vote the old fashion way.
You hear about the RIAA Mp3 thing everyday, kind of reminds me about the OJ Simpson Trials or when the news constantly reported about 'The Middle East.'
I was the victim of a smurf. Instead of taking me out though, they took the ISP out. What did the ISP do? They yelled at me, fortunately it hasn't happened again. However, a little off topic but if you harass someone on IRC and they contact your ISP, pray your ISP admin knows that/ignore is an option, because my ISP (Computer Country in Medford, OR) yanked mine for that reason.
This seems assinine. Denying all attatchments instead of just improving security checks? You've got to be kidding. I hope there's a class action lawsuit if this happens to be the case.
I've seen the monitor, it cries out 'Radiation EMITTED STRONGLY'.
If people insist of posting NYTimes articles, why the hell not include the link to the NOAUTH/PARTNERS version as well?
If it means billions and it stops another Florida incident.. I think the gov. could justify the $$ for it, dontcha think?

RadioShack is just as bad as the Evil Empire...

On the bright side, if I want to buy Mandrake I am sure it's cheaper @ WALMART than at say, Staples. So I would go buy it. :-)

You know when you live in Oregon or any border state of California, you have to go through the inspection..
I mean, I'm just wondering.... The last thing we need is astronauts coming back with metal eating fungi.. :

What does Linus do in this type of situation?
They hangout on the Newnet IRC network. They use the channel #Jaxn on irc.jaxn.com
:\
