Have you tried USB under win95???
    It's pure crap!
My father bought a laptop with win95 and of course wanted to use his usb-zip, should just be to plug it in? Right!
    It detects it. good.
Reboot... starting win95, oh wait not zip...
hmm install it again... detects it... reboot...
no zip! install again... no zip. Tried copying usb files to other directories after some talk with some other people... Didn't work
Went to the manufacturers homepage and downloaded usb-fix. That should take care of it...
Ok, detects zip... reboot... zip working!
Confident I turn it over to my father... He starts using it... turns it off... no zip...
reboots... no zip... install usb-fix again... detects zip... shutdown... starting win95 no zip!

I just settled on making a nice icon on the desktop with the name "Find zip-drive", and suggested that he should get win98 upgrade.
Why isn't the win98 cd we have working, he asks me. It doesn't have the drivers, I tell him...
He can't really understand that you would need to buy a new win98 cd to upgrade his laptop.

So Linux isn't more than 2 years behind win (win98) in getting usb to work!

  4. Re:Ok on Ericsson And Red Hat In Home Communications · · Score: 1

Ok, would people stop thinking Ericsson is a phone only company. =) The mainly make phoneswitches and complete solutions for mobile phones, include basestations and stuff like that. They even made a loss from selling phones in the first 6 months, but made great profit from basestations and stuff like that.

And aside from the phonebusiness the make a lot of intresting research, for example they invented Bluetooth. They desided that people would benefit from an standard so they standardized it.
They also make radars and similar equipment for army use. I belive they made some part for ESA (european space agency).
In the 80s they even made computers.

They are also the makers of Erlang a functional language made for high availability use. From Ericssons website:
"Erlang is a general-purpose programming language and runtime environment. Erlang has built-in support for concurrency, distribution and fault tolerance. Erlang is used in several large telecommunication systems from Ericsson. The most popular implementation of Erlang is available as open source from the open source erlang site."
There is even a Debian package of Erlang.

Recently they have started to get in to the world of internet by buying of a lot of small companies with intresting products aimed for the net.

Besides being members of Symbian they have a deal with Microsoft for using Pocket-pc And now a deal with Red Hat.

They are a huge company about 100 000 employees but they are too often compared to Nokia which is mainly a phonecompany.

Ok enough about this... I am btw not connected to Ericsson in anyway other than using their products about every time a make a phonecall. Kind a hard to avoid it if I would like to, considering their equipment basicly runs the swedish phonesystem.

it's not like they're gonna lose any money on it, those who need more functions will buy the full version and they gain an active userbase who else would not have afford it and would get an illegal copy or choose another product. Great news anyway! Thanks Discreet!

Sure you could blame the programmer, calling him a bad programmer, but seriously how many programs have bufferoverruns and similar problems?
I bet most of the more advanced programs you are running have or have had such problems. I bet programs like Apache have or have had them (don't blame me if it doesn't, it was just an example =))!
Why? Well I wouldn't say because of bad programmers, rather because of a language that allows buffer overruns to happen easily. I mean even the best programmers makes mistakes. Mistakes of this kind are easy to make.

Languages like Java have checking against overruns but the main argument why not to use Java seems to be speed.
Sure checking for Exploits of this kind makes the programs slower but it's worth it!

I heard rumors that Ericsson have started using Java despite it is slower than C, why?

First because it takes less time to write a program because lots of code is already written, which saves money.

Secondly because it is easier to debug, you are less likely to make errors (easier syntax, etc), which saves money.

They are just 2 examples, in a big project they can save lots of money, which means that they can by a faster computer that makes up for the fact that Java i slower than C.

Sure Java isn't a perfect language for everyone and every program but it's an alternative one should consider when starting to make a program.
