The olympus compact flash memory is 'smartmedia' which is basically just your everyday compact flash memory card without an onboard controller.
This format is nice and cheap, and will become cheaper as there is more demand for it. The last thing we need is another proprietary doohickey for storage. (5.25" floppy, 3.5" floppy, zip, jaz, syquest, superdisk, sony`s new 150 meg high density 3.5" lookalike) Enough to drive you crazy even if you don`t throw in rival music type manufacturers.
From what I understand, the record companies shell out $500+ bucks an hour for the use of recording studios (sure, they own `em but they still charge it to the artist). After all o that they jack prices on the CD so they can recoup the money they advanced to the artist and spent in production. Then they further jack the prices so they can pay the artist some slack royalty that amounts to more than $.02 per unit.
I don`t begrudge payin cash to support the artist themself, but to shell out to make the recording companies rich is irritating at best.
Just look at what the recording companies are pushing now...Backstreet Boys, `n sync, brittney spears, 98 degrees...and a thousand other prefab groups. No wonder there`s a decline in the purchasing power of the 15-24 age group. When you release an album that has maybe 2 good tracks then it becomes more economical to dig for an MP3 than to buy a $18 album.
I`ve found that down at 112 and 128KBps there is a definate lack of sound quality (especially among the highs) so I tend to encode at 160KBps 48KHz or better.
I`m using an L3enc compatible encoder (bladeenc actually) and playback with Winamp. I can`t live without either one.
i don`t have a tv. got to do something with my time.
i pretty much like netscape6. it`s unfortunate that the ui looks like a bad cartoon. this is not something i want to stare at for 12 hours a day.
It`s a nifty little box. I was going to buy one but I couldn`t decide what colour I wanted.

About a zillion manufacturers are jumping on the CE bandwagon. The competition tends to drive down prices. That`s about the only thing I can think of.
