The real problem as I see it is that the laws need to be reformed enough so that OPEN/FREE software can do anything that Closed/Commercial can. Right now some of the IP laws prevent this from happening, and some of the coming ones will tighten that even more. All I presonally want is a level playing field, and so long as we have "Trade secrets", Broadcast flags, CSS, etc that can never happen because IT locks out Open/Free which requires that those secrets begiven to everyone using the software and nothing be hidden. Thankfully we won the battle with the W3C and they dropped that whole RAND thing for web standards. A step in the right direction, but not the whole road.

  14. Suggestions on Stopping Disruptive Users in Online Communities? · · Score: 3, Informative

I have been through this ordeal as well here are my suggestions.

    1. After a new user chooses as username, have the submission form look up against a list of banned words. This kills many trolls immediately because they can't register offending names.

    2. Verified registration, the whole Ok we will now send you an email that will contain a URL which will activate your account.

2a. Do not allow any registrations to generic email services. NO hotmail, yahoo, gmail, etc accounts are valid for registration. Has to be an account that is at least in theory trackable back to a real person someplace.

    3. Install a moderation system similar to slashdot's its one of the few I have seen that works. (For an example of one that doesn't see kuro5hin.org, moderation there is so screwed up the trolls always win)

    4. Only allow one registration for your site to a particular email address, cc number, addresses, etc.

    5. Require reverification if the user updates their email address.

    6. Require periodic reverification of the account.

If you were using the name before they were then they have no right to tell you to change their name. I had a silimar situation with a web site I used to run. The lawyer for another company contacted us and said they owned the trademark on the site's name (actually it was worse than that, after several conversations they even tried to claim their copyright was any derivitive of one of the words in the name)...the situation finally came to a head after us refusing thier demands several times. I wrote a carefully worded letter based on many hard facts and dates attached to those facts. Our domain had existed before company name appeared to from every record I could find (well the company has existed for a long time, but the trademark in question was not filed for until approx 1.3 years after our site started doing business, and our domain was registered.) As for the we clain trademark on any smaller part of that name, I provided him in the letter a long list of other sites with that word in them that had existed long before ours had. I even pointed out a .com name that used his exact trademarked name (our was a .org and .net) that had existed way before his company's site had. BTW the term in question was the newsletter his site sent out and had nothing to do with the actual company name or DBA name of his business/sitename.

I still keep the .org, and .net names registered to this day just for the potential piss off factor since they can't do a damned thing about it. Our Company folded 3 years ago at this point.

Lucas is great at concepts and excellent at bringing his vision to life.

    He should:
    1. Write the conceptual story line of 7,8,9...Characters, motivations, plot points, over all story and back story...in short write himself 3 novels that tell the story of 7-9 (Yes I too would love to see the thrawn Trilogy Filmed, but I don't think thats what Lucas wants here)

    2. Once done work with a REAL talented Known good screen writer(s) with proven results to develop a high quality script. Actually honestly if they were willing to do it Joss Whendon and/or Kevin Smith wouldn't be bad ideas.

    3. Hand the directing job over to a another director, but stay involved in the production of movies technical aspects, Thats what Lucas is good at...Speilbergh, Chris Carter, or Kevin Smith would be good choices here.

    4. Concentrate on story, NOT whizbang, and integrate back story more fully...there are still hanging questions in the Star Wars Trilogy that have never been resolved related to questions involved in the backstory.

    5. Stop using the same tired old plot devices, they have been very repeatitive throughout the series now.

Perhaps the Voicedictation market has something to do with it, maybe the recognition rate and quality is higher than OCR and now people are just reading the documents in with voice Rec apps?
