No, I'm sarcastic. Here's these people complaining about the cost of the new Apple laptops and I was illustrating what the same amount of money bought, 12 years ago. Was also bragging a bit about my Q650. Is the best computer I've ever owned. No hardware failures, ever, even with all the upgrades it's had (runs three monitors, has been upgraded to a 100Mhz PPC, maxed out with RAM, 4 GB HD, and has a 2x SCSI CD-R. It's case is solid metal and I (215 lbs) can use it as a step stool. Damn! Nice engineering.

I was part of a team that transsisioned Fla Honeywell engineers from Mac Desktops to Windows, back in 95-96. Talk about a bunch of complainers. "I can't find my printer", "Outlook sucks", "My Mac was cute!", etc. Only fun bit was watching the support metrics climb as more windows machines went online.

Meh. I paid $2500 for my Quadra 650/230MB HD/12MB RAM with AV monitor (with built in sub woofer) (1994). And that didn't include the price of the laser printer, tabloid scanner, or external SCSI stack (La Cie Jewel drives). Friggin' monitor died 4 years ago. And the computer is maxed out at 136MB of RAM. It can't even handle a gig. Apple's a fuckin' rip off!

You can already dual boot into Linux, NetBSD, etc. As for Windows, Apple says they're not going to stand in the way of it. Can't wait to hear how it goes.

I just keep multiple copies of my home directory scattered across my various home machines. True, a 747 could drop some blue ice through my roof and wipe everything out but I'm willing to risk that. Suppose I could go and mail off a 100 GB hard drive to my buddy cross country every month, but she lives in Fla, near the water. Not the best place for remote backup.

A year and a half ago, I picked up two dead G3/4 laptops (PowerBook Bronze, and Pismo), and combined the working parts into one good machine. Other than the battery coming loose and the cover plate on the CD tray falling off, this thing's been running great. It has 512MB RAM, 400 MHz G3 and latest version of OSX 10.4.3. Is a little slow when running Bryce, compared to my dual G5 but it still works fine for movie watching, surfing the web, etc.

  17. Re:Users are stoopid? on Linux in a Business - Got Root? · · Score: 1

Well, certainly, admins (dbas and sys) need some form of root access. And recently, one of our larger problems was caused by someone in IT screwing something up on a server but that's about the only way we have system wide problems anymore. Regular users (not in IT, but admin, research, production, etc.) have been isolated to just their own machines. Sometimes they have trouble with an organizational server they've set up but those are mostly testing machines. Is expected. For regular work apps/db's, we heavily recommend transferring app/business requirement to IT supported server. And then they get no root access, on day-to-day, unsupervised basis. Seems to work. Sure, there's always the impatient ones out there, that demand root to change something themselves, instead of going through channels, but most seem to understand how things are done.

  18. Users are stoopid? on Linux in a Business - Got Root? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Even the smart ones. Sure, give the users some stand alone development machines with root access but don' let them fuck up the cluster/servers. A lot of users are focused on their job but they don't always see how their actions on shared equipment will impact the company or entity at large. /tech support at large lab, full of brilliant idiots.
