  1. Brings back memories on 1985 Usenet About Y2k · · Score: 1
That reminded me of 2 things:
    1. I had COBOL in college, and our instructor told us that if we really wanted job security until 2000, we should look into the Year 2000 coding issue. That was a problem that is very big, and not a lot of companies have addressed it yet. When they do, they are going to need a LOT of COBOL programmers. I became a hardware weenie instead. ;)
    2. I run sound in my spare time, as does a good friend of mine who is a consultant. We were asked to run sound for a conference on Y2K survival. It turned out to be a gloom-and-doom bit with all the things that could go wrong, and here is how you get prepared. We sat in the sound booth quietly laughing our heads off at some of the things that were predicted. "The Russians have very old chips in their missle control systems, and they will launch by accident because of the date change! All your stop lights will quit working!" so on and so forth. We knew the seriousness of the situation, but also knew the level of changes that were being made.
  2. Still used on Death to the 3.5" Floppy? · · Score: 1

Yepper! I still user the floppy to bring systems back from the dead that others have killed. Sometimes I don't have a bootable CD to start the system and re-install the OS, so I have to have the floppy. I also will use it to move small amounts of data between site rather than waste a CD.
I realize that the cost of CDs is very low, but I can reuse the floppy without any special software, whereas burning a CD still requires software.

You had a neighborhood?!? I had to imagine there was neighbors to keep the dinosaurs back! ;) In all honesty, I wonder if the current generations couldn't really do with more mentally challenging activities. I remember getting a contruction set that used regular plastic straws that you modified with the tools in the kit. Or plain old Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, etc. If you are forced to investigate things, then your curiosity will be there when you need it, like when the server keeps bouncing and you haven't touched it. Speaking of which, time to go kick the server again.

Put it under your hat? That is exactly how worms get spread so bad! People don't release the information regarding fixes and admins don't do them. With /. posting the information, then more exposure is made regarding the fix. Geez, let's get a clue here! I admin both IIS and Apache sites, and this is actually the first notice I have seen regarding the fix. To bad MS isn't more forth coming with info regarding their problems!

  8. Another one hits the stands? on The Last Hero · · Score: 1

I have only read a few of the books, but have enjoyed each of them. I would agree that Rincewind would be a tough character to "star" in a novel, as there are only so many different ways that he can respond in a cowardly way that ends up working out. But I am glad to hear that Cohen hasn't ridden off into the sunset yet, in over the edge of the disc in the case. :)

Until recently, I was a network admin consultant. Part of the services I provided was securing the network systems. I would test their physical security and find the holes as well as the digital security. You would be amazed at how easy it is to walk in and out of manufacturing centers, and data centers. I even took my wife in once, just to prove that it could be done. Of course, things are a little tighter now, but not impossible.

  10. Re:Cabling on Hardware Networking FAQs? · · Score: 1

There aren't any problems having your server on Gbit and your workstations on Mbit, if you are using quality switches. All the traffic is passed through and handled by the switch, thus no problems.

If you use a cheap switch, which you most likely won't find with Gbit, you will have problems like this.

  11. Re:Why avoid little hubs ??? on Hardware Networking FAQs? · · Score: 1

The reason to avoid the small hubs in the cubes, is because now you have additional traffic that you are not planning for. If you plan for a set amount of traffic per connection, then someone goes and hooks a switch or hub to that connection, they are using more bandwidth over that connection than planned. Also there is a limit to how many hops you can go with connections before freaky things start happening. This is hops before the backbone and routers, not from including the backbone. The problem lies with the MAC addressing in switches. I have seen it, and you will spend some time if you don't know what is going on.

Mir has been up there a VERY long time. NASA has been insisting that the station has outlived it's operating lifetime. It has a decaying orbit. Why in the world would ANYBODY in there right mind want to risk a trip up there? Would you really want to compete for the chance when winning isn't about who is the most suited, but who is the best butt-kisser? No way, I want to go up, but not like that. my $.02

I have watched over the years as everything in the US has been come controlled by the almighty buck! DOn't get me wrong, I like 'em as much as anyone else (can't buy a decent system to play UT on without bucks), but isn't there supposed to be a point at which people also do things for love of the doing? I have a problem paying a person 8 figures to play a sport, but paying someone 4 figures to perform necessary services for us, like trash pickup, or teaching. I have a problem paying hundreds of dollars for entertainment, and seeing others get a smidgeon of that money. Not asking for welfare, that is reverse robbery, but I think that somewhere our values got a little of kilter.

It sounds silly, but one of my goals was to actually see the zipper on my pants, and I can now do this for the most part. I plan to do it again and focus even more on setting goals, this is something I have never been good at before, but I have really found it to be helpful during the program.

I have read all that all have to say and I am not surprised at the differences in opinions. I am personally finishing a 12wk program of exercise, dieting, and supplamentation (God I hate spelling that!). I have reduced my body fat by over 10%, adding a large amount of muscle and changed my eating. I still love a good greasy burger, but I don't focus on them. It suprises me how many of us are not willing to find the time to take care of us. I work out of town for 50-60 hours a week minimum, travel to and from work each week, and still make time to make a difference. I spent a long time researching different approaches before using a particular one.
Yes, a high protien diet can be bad for you, IF you don't counter it with a large amount of water intake (10 cups or so) per day. The body needs that protein to repair the muscles that you are going to "damage" when working out. Cut back (not cut out) on the carbs to allow the body the options to use up the fats you have now. The more mucle you have, the more enegy your body needs to keep goig, thus you burn more carbs/fat.
Yes, Creatine is a excellent choice for a supplement (got it that time!) to you diet. Just remember that you still need to drink water! Creatine sucks up water like mad!
Yes you need the weights, not just running. Not matter what sport you take part in, you can benefit from the effects of a structured weight training program. Why do you think that the US Olympic Track & Field Team has one of the best weight centers? Train with weight 3x weekly and perform INTERVAL intensity aerobic exercises 3x weekly. This is because the body will respond to the intense aerobics much better than low-impact aerobics.
My suggestion would be to look at the Body for Life program. It is a great way to reshape your body, and who knows maybe you could win some cash?
Just find something that will work for you, and do it. We work in somewhat sendentary jobs, and will waste away if we don't do something!
