McDonalds is not a success for it's "endless selection," but it's consistency of product. You can go to any McDonalds in the world and get the same exact thing.
Some people - myself included - would say that 'McBlondalds' is a failure for this exact reason.
Linux does not have to be a successful Product(TM) to be 'successfull'. What you fail to realize is that Western Thought draws a parallel between ubiquity and success - I would argue the opposite. Successful things are not always the ones with the most market share - this is a horribly corrupt point-of-view. Why do people get mired in the 'economics of all things'? Not everything is a business - Not everything should serve the Almighty Dollar(TM) - and Linux is successful because there are people who use and enjoy it. Myself included - when I use Linux I always imagine thousands of talented people giving me a gift of themselves - with 'no strings attached*' - that they are 'geeks' like myself who are fascinated by computers and do this because they find it interesting - not because they intend to exploit the marketplace to make themselves rich.
When you look at the Libre & Gratis GNU/Linux you betray your own bias when you begin talking about 'market share' and dismiss it because it hasnt any 'corporate desktop' installs.
People who find themselves (like the journalist) in this position do not fully understand why GNU/Linux is (and will continue to be) a success**.
*Except that I also share (that's what the GPL is about) **IMHO;).
go and watch a real news program on television. One that reports on wars, and politics. Then look up the definition in a dictionary I just did that:
tel-e-vi-sion news (noun): A system and method to distribute propaganda to mis-educate an uninformed public. Will increase apathy and lethargy. Device to display lies, damn lies and marketing campaigns. Usually employed by Multi-National Corporations to shape reality to match product offerings - replace individual experience with collective conscience. Also employed by Corrupt Western Governments in order to maintain their entrenchment, and satisfy the desires of their Corporate Task Masters(TM). *Health Note*: To be avoided at all costs; will cause a serious detachment from reality and cause the viewer to participate in group-think rendering them incapable of using their cognitive function.
Phew! Thank god you recommended we go get the *real* story from television newscasts.
"maintain a database of [the locations of] MP3 data" if by doing so you are knowingly or recklessly aiding and abetting copyright violations.
Well then - I guess we'll just have to wait until the courts say that. I would argue that this is not aiding and abetting... and so would many lawyers (who were paid to say that). I guess the RIAA will have to try this case in all countries it would like to wag its tail in. By that time we will have destroyed their revenue stream. Fuck them.
since "material that is ruled unlawful in the jurisdiction of the originating server" is against the AUP of Havenco"
As a citizen of the right and honourable Canada - I can tell you that 'maintaining a database of MP3 data' is by no means illegal. Dont forget - NapsterServers never EVER EVER actually contain/move/transfer any files, as much as the RIAA would care to mislead otherwise. It only responds to queries. No DMCA here. No Plutocratic Court ruling about 'contributory' infringement (whatever). This activity is certainly not "illegal" in Canada... for now.
I think I'd load up on weapons, and become an anti-organisation vigelante. Take down all of the current senior managers who have Hitler complexes, before they can start controlling people and resources again
I like the way you think - count me in.

Your geek crowd would be capable of maintaining/recreating tools from the destroyed civilization (alcohol, electricity, gas, radios, chemicals etc etc).
Consider the RedNeck Clan (your average blue-collar, oprah-watching, football lovin', consumo-tron) would likely tear each other apart fighting about which person would get to lead.
Dont kid yourselves - we geeks will rule the coming Apoc-e-clypse.
The solution is to get government out of the "goal business", and just stick to very basic and fundamental things (e.g. protecting human rights). Let people work to achieve whatever goals they have
Again - Agreed. The 'economy' is presently being used as a tool to undermine rights everywhere. MPAA buys DMCA and BonoCopyrightExtension. Logging companies devastate the commons. Nike spends 90% of their budget on 'mind control' (marketing) while employing children in the Philippines...
These 'human rights' need to be protected - and if the Plutocrats in Government are only interested in supporting business efforts/visions (WTO, WIPO, FTAA, WorldBank etc etc) then who is going to look after Human Rights, Peace and The Preservation of the Commons? What the 'vote with your dollars' crowd dont realize is that it will never be 'profitable' to maintain standards of these kinds. They only 'add to the cost of the product' if XYZ Corp. decides to - if their is no direction for them *all* to act this way (Government Legislation) then we will continue to see the wholesale of Everything(TM). *I understand and accept your premise that "not everyone's goals are the same" but Im sure we can generally agree that rape, murder, theft, exploitation, profiteering, anti-competitive business practices and a few other basics are generally agreed upon. Everything else should not be of concern to the government. IP Law would be abandoned & Lawyers would be in trouble if *I* were the fascist dictator...;)
encroachment upon our liberty by government, which capitalism tends to exploit when possible
Agreed. Why not try a Communist-based economy *and* strive for small government that maximizes personal freedom? Why not allow Libertarians their goals of personal freedom? Plutocracy is the real evil here - and as you agree - this is a result of capitalism. Personal Freedom is also 'my goal'. Mainly I see entrenched plutocrats as assaulting freedom.
I much prefer the term "Communist" or "Socialist" to the derogatory "commie" - Please spare us the McCarthy inspired slurs. Communism is a viable option when discussing political futures. It is a matter of employing a system to achieve our goals. Stop and think about which system is most likely to meet your goals (and what are *really your* goals).
The present state of Western Democracy is clearly the result of Capitalism. This is no secret. So dont sit back and defend Western Capitalism while scorning the inevitable product of its use which is Collusive Monopoly (RIAA, MPAA, The CPRM $whores$,) and Plutocracy. Most things people whine about on/. is a result of Plutocracy. Communism is clearly in-line with the goals of the Slashdot crowd: Which is to remove the Barriers to freedom (DMCA et al) put in place by the Bourgeoisie (Big Auto, Big Oil, Big Chips, Big IP, Big whatever industries).
(Yep, it's inconsistent, unpredictable, and, at times, unfair. But that's life.)
Basically what your saying is that the present or popular system is right because it is present and popular. Taking an opportunity to say "I DISAGREE" only to have someon dump 'this is the real world' makes me furious. Change is good. Make decisions for yourself - never assume what is 'normal' is correct. The world is full of problems. The only way to address them is to make changes. Dont be afraid of new thinking. Ever.
Personally, I'd like to see New Line voluntarily change the name of their flick. It'll help them avoid confusion in the box office (there are probably people out there who like crime dramas but don't want to see a fantasy Diablo-themed movie), and it's early enough that they can change their name without worrying about wasted marketing dollars
When did this become important? OR worthy of your brain time? Who cares if these idiots 'lose money on marketing'? Why change the movie title at all? Lets allow two movies titled "Diablo". I propose we allow them to be released on the same day. If a heard of sheeple cannot read the goodamn by-lines for their desired Entertainment Experience screw them - Im tired of watching logic and reality collapse to accomidate the buying habits of Consumo-Droids.
Imagine: Ford Motor company decides it may want to make a movie about Motors. Does "Motore" (Spanish for "Motor") 'belong' to Ford Motor? Only Ford can forever title movies containing "Motore"?
Imagine: Apple Computer decides it wants to make a movie about "Computer". Does "Computer" 'belong' to Apple Computer? Only Apple can forever title moveis containing "Computer"?
I reliaze alot of people may argue this or that about 'Law this and Law that' - but lets stop and think for a minute: What are we proposing? That now simple language can be trademarked? Will Future Capitalist Companies not only register 'www.bob.com', 'www.bob.org', 'www.bob.net' but also Trademark "bob the movie', 'bob the soft drink', 'bob the motor oil'. Will we 'sell language' to Capitalists? 20 years from now will all of language been registered as trademarks for businesses?
Before everyone runs off assuming Im a paranoid Slashdotter think long and hard. Watching the MPAA, RIAA, DeCSS, DMCA, UCITA, WTO, World Bank and the FTAA etc etc.. would you assume - for even one second - that what Im describing is not guaranteed to happen?
Sonner or later the obsolete RIAA will decide to cut their losses and abandon CDs all together - probably later.
How long until music is released solely on DVD? The RIAA is going to want to nuzzle up to the DMCA and the whores who bought/sold it. Expect to see "DVD MUSIC"(TM) or somesuch begin to be marketed, it will have 'exciting new features' like included music videos, Performer information, bios, video clips from recent performances - etc etc etc. Its real purpose is to hasten the transition to encrypted media for distribution.
The Only change to most people is they'll have to rip music from DVDs... one way or the other the RIAA is doomed (and good riddance) (sp?)
there would be no Eminem, no N-Sync and no Limp Biskit.*
And this is a bad thing?;)
We are seeing more and more the danger that MP3s present to musicians' livelihoods
Just so people understand: Digital Music Distribution only threaten the lively hood of the RIAA. Music (and the Arts) thrived before IP law. The Arts will thrive long after people stop trying to impose artificial constraints on culture/thought/speech (IP law). Please read this article by Courtney Love. Members of the band Garbage are caught up in a legal fight with RIAA thugs. What was the name of that black singer who went bankrupt a couple years ago - she had sold millions and millions of records - and was penniless? The RIAA is messing with public perception - digital music distribution threatens them(and they are obsolete but are _BUYING_ laws to protect their pocket book schemes) and not artists.*
*These people are essentially *not* artists - they are products. This is what the RIAA is interested in; not Art. _BUT_ unfortunately i cannot tell *other* people what to listen too - just as I cannot convince 95% of the worlds sheeple how to vote, or why it is they think they like these 'artists' (because the public is horribly connected to The Media Machine(TM) which purpose is to end individual thought and replace it with a 'shared' group experience which centers on the Consumer Values(TM) - I believe 95% of people are incapable of making decisions based on objective opinions because they are caught up in a massive experiment in Population Control (no I don't mean there is a dark force controlling it all - but the 'marketing' machine evolves to serve those who intend to serve themselves - which is why the system is becoming effective - its goals are to homogenize thought to match product offerings.. and its working.) Hows that for paranoid?;)
From what I understand about ports (im not a BSDer) is that the port 'application' will retrieve a maintained list of makefiles/configure scripts from a central repository - and duplicate that organized collection onto your BSD box. This collection of makefiles is 'refreshed' each time 'live' when you update your ports collection. This way you have all the 'latest' build procedures for every app who cares to register itself (for your particular BSD & version). When you want to install an application - you execute this makefile (which builds your app and resolves deps (by building those)) it does this by FTPing the necessary sources from the appropriate location.
What I understand apt-get to do is 'intuitively' reading the deps portion of a debian package and dloading binaries from the registered 'sources' list (what is that file called..?) and installing them for you. It is an 'automagical' frontend to retrieving and installing debian pkgs.
I think this apt vs rpm argument is a little off base - again im not intimately aware of any package system, this is just what ive gleaned about them over time - is that rpm isnt comparable to 'apt' at all. RPM is a package standard - with its own format and features - but 'apt' is an application to retrieve packages (debian ones). What is necessary is a 'apt' application to retrieve 'rpm' packages. My understanding is not deep enough to argue the ad/dis vantages of either package format... I would suggest neither is the author of the article.
Our Brazilian friends at Connectiva are working on an APT 'port to RPM'. Slashdot has a discussion about this the apt-rpm project here
What i have described above may be all completely wrong - but this is how I understand it. Please correct me if this is so.
except that sony are whores of the highest order - so 'F' the AIBO and their bi-ped. Anyone remember the "we'll block them at the isp, we'll block them at the servers, we'll block them in their own computers" speech?
IM sorry - who the hell is working at the USPTO? This is beyond ridiculous. Not only is there tonnes of prior art but the idea that a method to change themes is *not* obvious to a average person trained in the arts is also ridiculous. Are the USPTO taking bribes directly? What the heck is going on?
Then everybody can't agree. So we must find a way to make everybody agree, so we shoot those who disagree or place them to linger and die in labor camps
Where the hell did that come from? Why would I care what you are proposing to do to make yourself happy? I wouldnt give a damn. Your rights to seek happiness ends when it interferes with the commons. When you pollute or exploit this is wrong. I would suggest you dont have the right to do that in pursuit of your happiness. When you subvert the purposes of capitalism to control markets/people/other business. I would suggest you dont have the right to do that in pursuit of your happiness.
Its the idea that *YOUR* rights are more important than the rights of the community is what I would be against. Im finding that this concept is what is lacking in the USA - im really thinking this is the fundamental problem. Americans care nothing of others - its a engrained character flaw (and encouraged by your Corporate Government because it serves them) - you simply cannot see the 'other arguments' because you are conditioned to only care for yourself.
America spends more on its miltary than any other country in the world. What exactly does this contribute to free trade ?
You're joking, right? How about, for one, the free-flow of oil at market prices? Or do you forget that Saddam dude who tried to take over a large majority of the world's oil supply? If the US hadn't stepped up, you would have a king of the "United Kingdom of the Middle East" by now. Stable economies require a stable world. A strong military is critical to stable economies.
The fact that you feel the 'free flow of oil' or 'stable economies' are reasons to FUKCING KILL PEOPLE is exactly why you are disqualified from this conversation. Twit.
The problem is that Americans like big cars, and the rest of the world doesn't
The problem is that ONLY Americans would kill people so they can drive big cars that needlessly burn gas. The fact that you support a Plutocratic Government to use its Military to subsidize oil prices so you can drive a big car is amazing. When violence breaks out in other places; sane, stable and wise people are concerned for the citizens of the region, and are hopefull to participate in peace. Only Americans see Market opportunities and 'stable economies' as concern in these cases.
I would assert that the end of Capitalism is Plutocracy, Monopoly and Fewer Rights for Citizens. These being natural responses to an uncontrolled market economy where the Entrenched Interests change the social landscape to assure their survival (and greater 'success').
America is manifesting these problems now. Massive Transnationals rule the government, Business Issues are the only discussions amoung your 'leaders', the RIAA/MPAA buy laws like the DMCA without anyone (population at large) having any idea how/why, Massive Transnationals set terms to the markets because of collusive business practices.
We've already tried...communism. Communism has been attacked my McCarthy-inspired Americans. Make no mistake - the Powers That Be(TM) in America used every resource they had to destroy the former Soviet bloc - it did not 'fail' because of Communism, it didnt succeed because of the Actions/motives of Capitalist Yankees.
human population continues to grow *expontentially*
Bzzzt. Population growth rates are declining. In fact some western countries have birth rates lower than the replacement rate, and are only maintaining their population through immigration Western countries are not the only countries on the planet - Population is growing exponentially - and what the Sheeple in those countries are aspiring to is the same level of loathsome behaviour as 95% of American Sheeple. This is a problem. What will we do when everyone in the world tries to 'live' (consume) like Americans?
"Property Rights" are paradoxical, since the enjoyment of this right must deny this very same "right" to another.
True enough, except that the concept of 'Rights' itself implies that you have taken away something from another individual. For example, my right to life means that you do not have the right to kill me. Are you really proposing that indivduals should have no rights?
You might want to take a moment from defending your dogma to actually read his post. non sequitur:
An inference or conclusion that does not follow from the premises or evidence.
A statement that does not follow logically from what preceded it.
Come back when you have a premise that is not filled with logical fallicies and factual error.
healthcare but is definately not uniform and the quality is at best tenious (tenuous maybe?)
Utter bullshite. Ive never had a problem with healthcare here in Canada. If Im sick I get care. Simple. This holds true for 'serious' illness as well (ive had immediate family members with exceptional care during their successfull battles w/ cancer).
a by-product of the large concentrations of people
Bullshite again - The US has high crime beause of its value system. People are more likely to feel justified in their violent acts because it serves their selfish needs (whatever they are) - and that is the #1 value in America: You are the only important thing to yourself - Serve yourself - Consume. America does not have a 'high concentration' of people - look at the other end of the population density scale (Asian countries) and you'll see an inverse violent crime rate to that of the USA.

Im not a troll - Im dead serious.

Remains to be seen.
Make no mistake - the Powers That Be(TM) in America used every resource they had to destroy the former Soviet bloc - it did not 'fail' because of Communism, it didnt succeed because of the Actions/motives of Capitalist Yankees.
human population continues to grow *expontentially* Bzzzt. Population growth rates are declining. In fact some western countries have birth rates lower than the replacement rate, and are only maintaining their population through immigration
Western countries are not the only countries on the planet - Population is growing exponentially - and what the Sheeple in those countries are aspiring to is the same level of loathsome behaviour as 95% of American Sheeple.
You might want to take a moment from defending your dogma to actually read his post.

healthcare but is definately not uniform and the quality is at best tenious (tenuous maybe?)
Get your shite straight.
